A good few weeks had passed since you had first bumped into Hazel in that hallway outside of art class. You two had become much friendlier with one another since that point. Well at least when you were in art class or if you ever caught her without her crew of VKs which wasn't often, at least one of them always seemed to be lurking around with her. If she was around the VK crew she often ignored you or attempted to avoid you, it was a little painful but you assumed it was just a VK thing. According to other HKâs they were always switching up their moods with people.
In the time that had passed though you had still endured plenty of friendly interactions with Hazel. You'd had one or two slightly friendlier interactions in that time. At least they had felt like that for you at the time which was interesting and causing a whole new set of thoughts and feelings you weren't even aware were an option. See, growing up as a princess you were always told that when you were older you would marry a prince and live happily ever after. And you weren't really even sure if you wanted that honestly.
To be completely honest when you and Hazel had been around each other these friendly interactions were nothing more than light arm touches and her leaning across you in the supply cupboard to get something during class. But the way she had been so close to you turned those original few butterflies in your stomach from the first time you said goodbye to a whole kaleidoscope of butterflies. It was overwhelming but in the best way possible. You played the moments over in your head while you laid in your dorm at night and just kicked your feet and mushed your face in a pillow. A valid reaction in all honesty if you did say so yourself.
It was a mild, cloudy Friday. Contrary to popular belief, you enjoyed cloudy days just as much as warm sunny ones. Clouds meant rain and rain meant cosy pyjamas and curling up with a good book by the fire when you were home with your parents. You could sit on the makeshift window seat you and your roommate had made in place of a fireplace while at the dorms though, which was good enough for you. All you had to do was get through lunch and magical history and you could make your way back to the dorms and curl up.
During lunch you had noticed Hazel sitting by herself and made your way towards the pirate holding a lunch tray hoping you might get the opportunity to sit with her. Your mind kept filling with thoughts about how nice it would be to curl up near Hazel in the cloudy weather, however you brushed them off worried if you kept thinking this way that you would lose all hope of being friends with her. You approached the table, a warm smile on your face.
âFancy seeing you here. Come here often?â You spoke in a playful tone.
âThe cafeteria?â Hazel glanced up from her lunch raising an eyebrow. âEvery day princess, I ain't got anywhere else to have my lunch.â
You couldn't help but let out a small snort at her response, she sounded so serious about it and you weren't particularly sure what made it seem funny but it was.
âWhat's got you giggling hm?â She asked curiously.
âI'm honestly not sure- I think I'm just in a good mood today, may I sit?â You asked in a polite manner
âOh.. well I don't-â Hazel began but was cut off by the sound of a male voice.
âWell well, what do we have here? a princess sniffing around the VK table?â The voice spoke.
You knew that voice anywhere. Max Hatter.
Max wasn't a bad kid by any means but through years of bullying you knew that he had a bit of a problem with.. well pretty much any HKâs. Not that you'd done anything to him or his friends before. You thought maybe you could try talking to him, it had gone so well for you and Hazel.
âPrincess you should go. I don't want you to have any trouble with my crew.â Hazel interjected before you even had a chance to speak.
âOh- uh yeah sure. See you around I guess..â you spoke slightly deflated at the situation.
Heading in a direction away from the table you had just been at you found a quiet place to sit and eat your lunch. A soft sigh leaving you as you picked at the tray of food. Maybe you and Hazel weren't as close as you thought. Maybe all these situations were just in your head and it was these weird new feelings you had creating something that wasn't there.
As lunch came to an end you had hardly touched what was on your tray and that hadn't gone unnoticed by a certain pirate who had been sneaking glances across the cafeteria at you. Hazel felt bad sending you away sure but she knew how her friends were with HKâs even after everything they'd been through in wonderland, and she didn't want you to feel uncomfortable. She was also dealing with weird feelings around you and it was throwing her off. She was well aware that she liked girls don't get me wrong but no one had ever quite captured her attention like you seemed to. And it wasn't like she didn't notice the way you got all flustered whenever she was close. She actually rather enjoyed watching you fumble over words and try to process every little thing that happened even with just a simple brush of hands. It amused her. It brought a smirk to her face just thinking about it.
Magical history was your final class of the day. It was coincidentally another class you and Hazel shared although she sat at the back with Max and you sat next to Chloe Charming so not a lot of talking happened here. You made your way in sitting down taking out your books, greeting Chloe as she sat herself down next to you doing the same. As you sat yourself up in your seat Hazel made her way past you. She slammed a hand down on the desk making you jump, however once she'd walked to her own desk at the back of the room you noticed she'd placed a bit of screwed up paper on your desk. You picked it up and unscrewed it reading what she'd written.
âmeet me at the enchanted lake at 6pm.â
You looked at the note for a moment then turned back to look at Hazel.
Hazel glanced over a small smirk on her face throwing a playful wink your way to tease you ever so slightly.
This caused your cheeks to flush a warm shade of pink as you immediately turned around to face the front so as to not fluster yourself anymore. You immediately shoved the note in your bag and that's when your brain went crazy. You couldn't focus for one second. At one point near the end of the class Chloe even tapped you on the arm.
âHey, Y/n are you ok? You seem a little distracted today.â Chloe tilted her head very slightly to look at you.
âYeah- yeah no sorry, I'm good, I've just got a lot going on in my head today sorry.â You responded, it was true you did.
âOh- is everything ok? Do you wanna talk about it?â Chloe asked sincerely.
âUm.. no it's ok I'll be alright, thanks anyway Chloe.â You replied in a soft tone.
Chloe just nodded understandingly as she turned to finish up the notes she'd been working on before she asked how you were.
As the class came to an end you threw all your stuff into your bag as fast as you could. You wanted to go to the dorm and get yourself prepared for whatever conversation with Hazel was coming your way. Good and bad situations crossed your mind when you thought about all the possibilities of why she'd want to meet you, however you were begging, pleading that this meetup would be about being able to openly talk with one another.
Making your way to your dorm wasn't something that took long at all. You may as well have run there with how fast you'd walked. Once there you threw your stuff on the floor by your desk and immediately rushed to change into something a bit nicer than what youâd worn through classes today. After changing, you decided to style your hair and put on a very light bit of makeup. You really hoped that you weren't doing too much but you were sure Hazel would call you out if you did.
Checking the clock you widened your eyes. 5:50. Crap. You rushed out the door without another thought, the only thing on your mind was being on time for meeting Hazel. As you made your way hastily to the enchanted lake you checked your phone. 5:59pm. With one minute to spare you gave yourself a mental pat on the back.
As you glanced around there was no sign of Hazel anywhere to be seen. Your mind began to wander. What if she decided not to come? What if this was a prank? What if this was some elaborate ruse to embarrass you in some way? What if- Your thoughts were silenced when you heard a soft voice.
âHey.â It was Hazel.
Anxiety still present you took a breath and slowly turned to face her. She looked even better than usual. Maybe this wasn't some kind of prank.
âHi.â You meekly responded
âI didn't think you'd actually show up, you know.â Hazel half joked as she made her way over to where you were standing by the small raised ground overlooking the lake.
âReally? I was worried that you were gonna pull some kind of prank on me.â You nervously laughed. âI've heard you've got a reputation for being a prankster.â You quickly followed up.
âAwe. You believe rumours about me?â She teased before adding. âFlattery will get you everywhere for the record.â A playful smirk resting on her face.
âSome of them are a little outlandish but I can believe a lot of them.â You teased back
âThat's what I like to hear.â She joked, letting out a snicker.
You laughed with her for a moment before clearing your throat gently.
âSo um.. is there a reason you wanted to meet me here?â You asked, fidgeting with fabric on your clothes.
âRight, yeah. So I wanted to talk about something I've been thinking about.â She took a breath. âI don't know if you've noticed but I've been kind of avoiding you recently.â
Your heart dropped ever so slightly. This was it. She was about to tell you that she couldn't be your friend anymore and that you couldn't spend anymore time together and it was all about to become a nightmare for you and all those nights you had spent thinking about any interactions you'd had were about to become distant memories that only made you yearn.
âUh.. princess? Did you hear me?â Hazel waved a hand in front of your face.
You jumped slightly blinking quickly as you looked at her a little shaken. And then it happened.
âI'm sorry Hazel! I didn't mean to bother you during lunch today! I just wanted to see you and say hi! I've been feeling all these weird feelings lately and all I can think about is being around you and talking to you and every time you touch my arm or lean across me in the supply cupboard I have a whole kaleidoscope of butterflies bursting to get out of my stomach and I'm so confused and overwhelmed and I don't wanna lose you as a friend and I just really really really am so sorry for everything!â You cried out. Spilling every single thought and feeling you'd been experiencing over the last few weeks.
Hazel was silent for a moment. Staring at you a little shocked. You'd never seen her speechless before. She then laughed a little, and then a lot. This immediately sunk your heart to the bottom of your stomach. It was worse than you could ever imagine. She was laughing. Right in your face. Tears began to build in the corners of your eyes as you bit down on your bottom lip to hold it in. Hazel however noticed this and immediately stopped her laughing, reached across and gently placed a hand on your cheek.
âHey.. princess, look at me.â She spoke in a tone that felt so warm and safe.
You couldn't bear to look at her while your tears threatened to spill. You glanced for a second before looking to the side.
âY/n. Look at me.â She spoke slightly more seriously this time, using her other hand to carefully lift your chin.
This commanded your attention and though your eyes were welling up with tears you didn't dare to look away now that you were in complete eye contact with her.
âI don't know if you heard a single word that left me. But I was kinda trying to tell you the same thing.â She smiled a soft smile. âAlthough a lot less panicked and anxious.â Hazel couldn't help but let out a small laugh.
âY-you were?â Your voice cracked slightly as it came out.
âYes, dummy. I just didn't wanna freak you out and do it in public in case you rejected me. I don't think my ego could take that kind of hit.â She half joked, her thumb rubbing over where a tear slipped from your eye.
âYour ego would be fine.. you're Hazel Hook. Isn't ego a part of your personality?â You attempted to tease a small sniffle leaving you.
âOh wow. We're going there huh? You're lucky you're pretty princess.â She hummed a laugh out.
You couldn't help but blush at the compliment before you cleared your throat gently and took a small breath.
âSo um.. how does this work now? I've never done anything like this before.. well not since I was like a little kid and all I did was hold some boys hand because he liked me-â
You were cut off from your rambling by Hazel pressing her lips gently against yours. It didn't last as long as you wished it had but even the few seconds it did last felt electrifying. When she did pull back she let out a small awkward laugh, something you'd never heard from her before.
âSorry, I just thought if I let you keep rambling we would never get to the point.â Hazel said in jest.
âI- you- we-â Was all that left you. Your face a deep shade of red as you looked at Hazel in shock.
âOh no- I broke you, I'm sorry princess.â Hazel couldn't help but laugh as she cupped your cheeks in her hands. She felt so warm.
âThat.. that was my first kiss Hazel.â You admitted a little embarrassed.
âOh- oh wow- I didn't think- was it okay? I didn't mean to steal it-â Hazel spoke with wide eyes now worried.
âNo- no it was perfect- I mean I would've liked a little warning but it was pretty perfect..â you leaned into one of her hands gently. âBesides you're a pirate.. isn't your whole thing stealing?â You teased lightheartedly.
The pirate seemed to visibly relax at your words, letting a small laugh out before going quiet. The two of you stood in silence for a moment as you just looked at each other, you weren't quite sure how any of this happened but you were so glad it did.
âSo..â you spoke
âSo?â Hazel queried.
âWhat does this mean for us?â You asked in a quiet, unsure tone.
âWell.. ah right. You're a princess. I should do this properly.â Hazel teased.
The pirate moved to take a few steps back before doing a sweeping bow towards you then reached out and took your hand.
âMy dearest princess Y/n. Not a day goes by that I don't think about the moment you bumped into me in that hallway. You are stunning. Ravishing if you will. Would you do this pirate the honour of becoming my girlfriend?â She dramatically acted out about every single fairytale book proposal scene out there.
Your face flushed a bright shade of pink as you let out an amused giggle at her theatrics. You acted as if you were pondering your thoughts for a moment, just to tease her a little.
âHmmm.. well..â you spoke in a teasing tone. âOf course I would love to be your girlfriend Hazel. I would love nothing more!â You chimed out dramatically.
Hazel took a big step forward to close the gap once again between you. She waited no less than three seconds before she tilted her head and leaned in, pressing yet another gentle kiss to your lips. Although this time you found yourself kissing back. She held your waist with a feather light touch as your arms gently rested around her shoulders. And as if the moment couldn't get any more romantic, that rain that had been threatening to fall all day finally began pouring down.
The two of you pulled away after a moment, her lipstick stained on your lips. Not that you would ever complain about that. Hazel leaned down slightly resting her forehead against yours for a moment. You found yourself in a moment you never wanted to end and you couldn't help but think to yourself. How lucky were you that you bumped into her that day. And how things were going to pan out for you two. But right now you were happy and comfortable and you knew that through it all you'd have Hazel right there by your side.
