The hand is of vital importance to keep playing as the Duel progresses. The more cards we have the more options become available, allowing us to prepare stronger setups or respond against the opponent. To keep a healthy hand it might require some drawing and searching effects, while on the opposite side discarding effects will disrupt it before has a chance to play their best cards. While a few Decks can manage themselves with scarce cards or none in their hand, is undeniable how vital it is to have a hand ready for anything.
“Card Destruction” covers the ability to draw along hand disruption in a single effect, becoming a solid choice for many years until its ban from the TCG. “Card Destruction” forces both players to discard their entire hand, to afterwards draw the same number of cards discarded. While overall is a card loss for the user (The Spell itself), with a bit of timing “Card Destruction” can go from refreshing our hand with new options to completely ruining the opponent’s game plan before comes to fruition. Not only that, but depending of which cards we end discarding we can also prepare all sorts of strategies arround our Graveyard, creating great sinergy with certain Decks to achieve their full potential while damaging the opponent’s.
The outcomes involving “Card Destruction” can change considerably depending of the build is working with as well the players’ hands at the moment. By default, the Spell will often be used to refresh our hand with new cards with a lucky chance of disrupting the opponent’s. Before its activation we can Set important Spells and Traps to be spared of its effects, but otherwise we can use effects such as “Compulsory Evacuation Device” and “Fairy Tail - Luna” to bounce opponent’s cards so they’ll be discarded by “Card Destruction” afterwards. Some players might try to win by forcing the opponent to empty their whole Deck, as combining this card with effects such as “Side Effects?” and “Hiro’s Shadow Scout” will force them to discard a huge hand as a result. When comes to the Graveyard there’s plenty of revival effects to work along with, from well known choices like “Call of the Haunted” to more specific to a theme such as “Crane Crane” or “Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon”. But some archetypes goes a step ahead and will also trigger certain abilities by discarding their monsters to the Graveyard, going from Burning Abyss several effects once disposed to Dark World ability to swarm the field with huge monsters in a single turn.
“Card Destruction” is far from being absolutely gamebreaking, but obviously has incredible potential to turn arround whole games on its own. The chances of ruining the opponent’s plans by discarding their whole hand along bouncing and Deck Out strategies, drawing new cards as we fuel our Graveyard, and archetypes like Dark World unleashing their full potential right from our first turn are more than enough reasons of why this card is banned. But the same results we can obtain from “Card Destruction” can easily apply to the opponent as well, as they can gain a better hand as a result while fueling their Graveyard including monsters with effects triggered in the process. “Card Destruction” is a double-edged effect as both players have similar chances to obtain the same results, but while we will be at a small disadvantage when comes to the number of cards drawn we can keep the upper hand if we build our Deck arround this card’s possibilities.
