The dawn arrived slowly over the fortress.
Mist clung to the earth like a pale blanket, creeping through the grasslands beyond the wooden walls while the first rays of sunlight painted the distant mountains gold. Somewhere in the camp a rooster crowed. Men were already awake. Fires crackled. Horses stamped their hooves against the cold morning ground.
For once, however, Shimazu Toyohisa was not among them.
The warrior who had faced cavalry charges without flinching and crossed battlefields slick with blood lay trapped beneath a far greater opponent.
His son slept soundly atop his chest, one tiny hand tangled in the front of his father's kimono.
Toyohisa stared at the wooden ceiling.
The boy had finally fallen asleep less than an hour ago after deciding that the middle of the night was the perfect time to discover the existence of his own feet.
The child had laughed. The child had rolled. The child had attempted to eat a sandal. Then he had cried because the sandal was taken away.Only after exhausting himself had he finally collapsed onto his father's chest.
Now Toyohisa remained motionless.A prisoner.A very large prisoner. Across the room, you sat near the hearth preparing rice for the morning meal. The sight nearly made you laugh. The feared samurai who terrified enemy armies looked utterly helpless.
His eyes shifted toward you: "Help." You raised an eyebrow:"With what,Toya?"
"He has trapped me."You looked at the sleeping toddler. The boy's cheek was pressed against Toyohisa's chest.A tiny stream of drool stained the fabric. "He seems comfortable."
Toyohisa scowled:"He weighs more than an ox."
"He grows stronger every day." You covered your smile. The child truly was his father's son.Even in sleep, he refused to release his grip.
Toyohisa glanced downward. His expression softened. The change was small.Anyone else might have missed it.
You did not.You had learned long ago that Toyohisa's gentlest moments were often hidden beneath rough words and stubborn pride. His large hand carefully settled over the child's back.As though ensuring the boy remained there.Perhaps because Toyohisa knew better than most how fragile life could be.
A battlefield taught many lessons. The harshest among them was how quickly a person could disappear.
The door suddenly slid open.Cold air swept inside.A servant entered carrying fresh water. The sharp sound startled the child.Tiny eyes opened.
For one dreadful second everyone waited. Then the boy's face scrunched.
His mouth opened.A cry erupted powerful enough to shake mountains.Toyohisa immediately sat upright. The servant nearly dropped the bucket.
The child reached upward with both arms:"Dada!" The warrior's entire face changed. The irritation vanished. The exhaustion vanished.Even the servant seemed shocked by how quickly the transformation occurred.
Toyohisa scooped the child into his arms:"There now." The crying stopped instantly. The boy buried his face into his father's shoulder.
Complete and absolute victory.
You watched with amusement:"He's spoiled." Toyohisa looked offended:"He is not."
"He demands to be carried."
"He cries whenever you leave."
"He is intelligent."You laughed outright.Toyohisa ignored you.His son was already reaching for the short dagger secured at his father's waist.
A terrible sign.An extremely terrible sign. The boy had recently developed an obsession with anything sharp.
Toyohisa gently caught the tiny hand:"No."
The child blinked. Then immediately reached for it again.
The battle continued.Neither side surrendered.Hours later, the fortress had fully awakened. The courtyard buzzed with activity.
Soldiers sharpened weapons.Messengers came and went.Orders echoed through the compound.
Toyohisa sat beneath the shade of a tree while his son wobbled across the grass before him.
The child had only recently mastered walking. The results were mixed. His legs seemed uncertain about whether they belonged to him. Each step looked like a negotiation.A small crowd of soldiers had gathered nearby.
Not because of Toyohisa.
Because of the boy.
The child stopped.
Wobbled.
Then proudly took three more steps. The soldiers erupted into cheers.
The boy stared.Confused.Then he smiled.A toothy grin spread across his face.
The crowd cheered even louder.Toyohisa looked absurdly proud.
As though the child had conquered an entire province:"Did you see that?" he asked.
One soldier nodded:"Yes, my lord."
"Four, I believe."Toyohisa looked ready to promote the man.The child continued forward.
One more step.Then another.
He tripped.Several soldiers gasped. The boy landed in the dirt.Silence followed.Toyohisa had already risen halfway to his feet. Then the child pushed himself upright.Dirt covered his hands. His lower lip trembled. For a moment it seemed tears would come.
Instead, he glared at the ground. As though the earth itself had insulted him.Toyohisa barked out a laugh. The soldiers exchanged looks. The child stomped his tiny foot. The ground remained unconcerned.
"He truly is your son," you said from behind them.
Toyohisa's grin widened. The boy spotted you and immediately abandoned his struggle with the earth."Mama!" Tiny arms lifted.
You picked him up before he could topple over again. His face lit up.Toyohisa watched quietly. The sight settled something deep within him.
Something he rarely spoke of.A strange peace. The kind no battlefield had ever given him.The kind found only here.
For a man born during an age of endless war, it was perhaps the greatest treasure he had ever known.
Night had settled over the ruined fortress.
The sounds of laughter and conversation that had once filled the courtyard had faded into distant murmurs as lanterns flickered against the darkness.
Toyohisa stood alone beneath the wooden overhang of a wall
The evening air was cool.Below him, beyond the walls, peacefully under the moonlight.
Even after all this time, it still felt strange. His hand rested against the rough wood railing as he watched the village.
Then movement caught his eye.
Near one of the larger houses, several elven women sat together beneath a lantern.
Their voices drifted faintly through the night.
Unlike the sounds of war he had spent his life hearing. At first, Toyohisa paid little attention. Then he noticed the child.
A tiny elf no older than a year stood in the center of the gathering. The boy's ears twitched nervously. His little hands opened and closed as he stared at the distance between himself and his mother.
The distance was hardly more than a few steps.Yet to him it may as well have been a battlefield. The women noticed it too.
One began clapping.Another offered encouragement.Soon all of them were smiling.
Then took a step. The women erupted into cheers. The child blinked in surprise. Then took another. And another.
Tiny feet stumbling across the grass.Tiny hands reaching toward his waiting mother.More cheers followed. The little elf laughed.A bright, delighted sound.
His mother scooped him into her arms as the women celebrated as though he had achieved something grand.
The scene should have been insignificant.A child learning to walk.
Nothing more.Yet his chest tightened.Because he had seen that moment before.
Not beneath foreign stars.
Just last month,at his house.
''Feeling sentimental?'' A voice cracked in what changed his full mood adn he grits his teeth before turning to look at Nobunaga:''No!-''
''You totally do!''Nobunaga, toyakisa puffed his chest: So what? Didn't you get sentimental when your child took his first steps?!''
Nobunaga, took that personally and got defense before smacking Toyahisa:Don't turn this on me!''
