Maybe it's just me, but I really get a Tom of Finland vibe from Frank Quitely's Wolverine
Doom Patrol #100 - "Robotman -- Wanted Dead or Alive" (1965)
written by Arnold Drake art by Bruno Premiani
i step out onto stage clad in full corpse paint and death metal regalia and start playing the most middle-of-the-road soft rock you've heard since 1974
I need to find more comics people to be friends with. I need to talk to people about X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman, Doom Patrol, TMNT, and/or Transformers depending on which one of my special interests is active at the time!

Okay, so, I started reading X-Factor and I was enjoying it, but I thought, "I really want to know what was going on with Scott before this series started and I really want to know more about Madelyne before she goes evil and takes Alex as a concubine. So I guess I should read the X-men comics that lead up to this."
And then I was like, "where should I start? When Madelyne first appeared? What issue was that? Wait, I've never actually read the whole Phoenix Saga maybe I should finally do that? Where's a good place to start with that?"
Long story short I've gone all the way back to Giant-Sized X-Men #1
Whadap-bop ba-da dop!
Also, I guess I'm a John Proudstar stan now, because I'm so mad at how dirty he was done
Also, god the issues of All-New All-Different X-Men immediately following Giant-Sized X-Men are super underwhelming. Oh no, it's normal human Count Nefaria. How will our group of super powered teenagers and also Wolverine defeat a normal human man?

It sure is lonely being the only person in the world who doesn't like Absolute Batman
It's just so boringggggg
Have I not yet made it clear here that I’m aggressively uninterested AB, and that I’m alternately baffled and depressed that so many people seem to love it? Like, it’s all just so… cheap. Low-hanging fruit. Body horror monster versions of rogues like out of Resident Evil, huge muscles, tons of firepower that makes Frank Miller’s Batmobile tank look quaint, 80’s anime mecha BatFam… and so many people love it. I still think about recently meeting a rare comic fan in the wild, and he was SHOCKED that I, a self-professed Batman fan, didn’t like Absolute Batman! Mind you, he made it clear that he was more of a Marvel fan anyway, not someone who really keeps up with Batman.
I dunno, I just feel that it’s, like… Batman marketed for people who don’t generally follow Batman comics. Y’know, like Hush was, along with Morrison’s run (just like how their X-Men run brought in tons of readers who didn’t really read X-Men, who ditched the book once Morrison was gone). It’s Batman repackaged into popular cool things they recognize.
I’m reminded of when a (former) close friend told me he LOVED the New 52 origin of Wonder Woman, with the Zeus backstory that just made her Hercules. He was like, “I never really *got* Wonder Woman before, but I get this!” Because it was familiar. It didn’t have the challenging hurdle of being unique, much less centered around women. Never mind that he never read the Pérez run, nor showed any interest in checking it out, because he still didn’t care about the character. He just thought the new story was cool. But not enough to actually start reading WW and appreciating her as a character.
By contrast, I think that Absolute Wonder Woman actually COULD potentially work to get people into mainline WW stories like the Pérez run. It’s consistent with Diana’s personality, it generally doesn’t downplay the mythological aspects, and it’s still woman-focused. Absolute WW appeals to both seasoned WW fans and new readers, who might be able to read older stories with new appreciation for Diana.
But I don’t think the same can be said for Absolute Batman. Just like Morrison’s Batman readers largely ditched Batman once Morrison was out, I don’t think Absolute Batman readers will end up with a newfound interest in Batman comics outside stuff like The Dark Knight Returns and all the darker, edgier stories that followed in Miller’s wake. One way or another, it’s Batman for readers who are very much not us, and it’s honestly bummed me out to realize how few people actually want to read the kind of Batman I’d want to see.
TL;DR, THIS AIN’T YER DADDY’S BATMAN, FANBOY!
"Batman for people who don't like Batman" is exactly what it feels like to me
With an added touch of "embarrassed to be associated with Batman iconography and characters" and a dash of "somehow the 90s have returned"
It sure is lonely being the only person in the world who doesn't like Absolute Batman

I've managed to develop an extreme anxiety reaction when I even think about trying to draw
This is not ideal
Huh. I think this floppy copy of X-Factor issue 2 that I have is signed by the penciler, Jackson Guice?
Oh my god, they are literally pulling the Ghostbusters scam. Like this is almost word for word the scene at the hotel after the Ghostbusters catch Slimer
I'm happy that Marvel is releasing Epic Collections of their various comics (especially because it's driving the secondhand price of Marvel Essential collections down) but it's super annoying that they are seemingly hiding the volume numbers on them?
I thought that they didn't have volume numbers at all, but it turns out they do have one. But Only on the first inside page and on the back cover. Not the front or the spine. And said volume number isn't listed on any of the online stores I've checked
What a weird choice
No? I do not want to want to ask youtube a question???

Delicious melodrama!
Scott, I really don't think you are handling this situation well. Not that I know how anyone should handle this situation mind
I've just started reading the original X-Factor comics for the first time and, honestly, I wasn't expecting Madelyne Pryor to still be married to Scott at this point. Can't wait for her and Scott to meet the recently resurected Jean Grey! I love this dumb soap opera shit
