Still not over the tragedy of Gustaves death btw. And not just from the perspective of the moment it happens, but everything else after. I'm far from the first person to say this, but there's this delicious crux that Verso believes Gustave will tie Maelle to the painting too strongly, so he lets Gustave die. But Gustave cares so much about Maelle, and making sure she is both safe (so many examples of him protecting her instinctively) but also has autonomy (letting her go on the expedition) and she TRUSTS HIM and will listen to him in a way she won't to Sciel, Lune or even Verso...idk man, I think he'd look at her choices at the end and be like: please let us live, let us thrive if you can but also. You have to go. And I think she'd listen to that FAR more readily than Verso: leave and let the painting die. Gustave literally present her the middle ground between verso and Maelles decisions on the canvas. But he can't. Because he's dead.
