“Oi,” James greeted his friends, sliding into the bench next to Remus and helping himself to some eggs, “have any of you seen my jacket?”
“Wha’one?” Sirius replied around a mouthful of toast, spraying Peter a bit.
“The one with my name on the back, dumbarse,” James shot back, handing Peter a napkin and giving him an apologetic look on Sirius’s behalf. “The only one I ever wear.”
“Oh, that one!” James lit up at Sirius’s recognition, but then– “No, haven’t seen it.”
Grumbling, he threw a roll at his friend across the table. “Fuck, Mum’s gonna kill me. She spent ten galleons on it for my birthday,” he grumbled.
But Remus elbowed him in the side, smirking. “I think I found it,” he murmured.
Following his friend’s line of sight, James looked across the Hall only to see a small group of Slytherins entering. Instantly, James’s breath caught in his throat.
“Why is my brother wearing your jacket, Prongs?” Sirius demanded, mouth agape, turning to James in utter disgust.
But James was too busy staring in dreamy awe, his head in a cloud. “Dunno,” he answered, beaming, “but he can have it for as long as he likes.” He took a swig of pumpkin juice, trying to regain his head.
But at that moment, Regulus looked up, meeting his eyes with a challenging little smirk, causing James to choke pathetically on his drink.
And Regulus, of course, just chuckled and turned away, giving James a look at his own name scrawled upon his back.
It took him about an hour to recover after that, but being late to class was definitely worth it.
