The myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with his own ivory carving, is famously recounted in Book X of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The story explores the boundary between art and life: Pygmalion's devotion led the goddess of love, Aphrodite, to bring the statue, later named Galatea, to life.
