the day after I posted this last time I was notified that I was selected for a really cool mentorship gig and got an unrelated glowing review at work

I'm so serious about being kind above all else. it has genuinely changed the way I interact with the world on a fundamental level and has made me so so much happier.

the other day, someone said something quite nasty and I patiently and kindly explained to them why I didn't think that was an okay thing to say. I treated them like they were my friend. they apologised! we didn't start arguing, and they reconsidered their stance on the matter. this has happened SO MANY TIMES. this is not a one off experience. every single time I am kind to someone who chose to be mean, it startles them into being kind back to me.

there are many many times where I thought someone was being abrasive, but I was kind to them anyway, and found out that they just didn't realise that what they were saying was hurtful. it starts a chain reaction and it will make you so much happier in life. please try it? try it just once! be kind to a cruel stranger. you might be surprised.

I have gotten quite a few asks which can be summarized as "my therapist doesn't believe me and keeps blaming me for my problems, but I know I have to stick with therapy if I want to get better-", and I need everyone to realize that therapy isn't inherently good and effective, nor is it always necessary for getting better. Having a bad therapist can actually be more harmful to your recovery than not having one! If your therapist makes you worse or doesn't help you, it's okay to walk away, whether to find a new one or to find healing in something else. You are in fact not morally obligated to see a therapist just because you're mentally ill.

I am NOT saying that all mental health issues have straightforward societal causes or that there wouldn't be mental illness in a more just society. But the amount of times people are struggling mentally at least partly due to factors like trauma, poverty, abuse, shitty jobs, loneliness, bigotry, discrimination, lack of options etc just to be told "well you have a random chemical imbalance and you just need to do the right psych med about it" really worries me. Like we cannot insist that mental illness is a completely individualized biochemical problem irrationally happening in your brain and that the right pill will just fix it.

they won't tell you this in therapy but sometimes the best way to stop catastrophizing/anxiety is to interrupt your spiraling with "girl what the hell are you talking about"

Don't cheat yourself out of relationships and experiences just because you decided you're not good enough.

Sure, you know how to self-flagellate, but do you know how to apologize? Saying "I'm a stupid idiot" is not the same thing as saying "I did something wrong."

People who want an apology pretty much never want to hear "I'm a stupid idiot." If someone is actually trying to get you to say you're a stupid idiot, it's not because it will make up for a mistake you made or harm you caused. It's because they want you to feel like a stupid idiot. People who care about you do not want you to feel like a stupid idiot and it hurts them when they see you putting yourself down in their name.
