“Too many to count...” The tactician mumbled timidly before downing another cup of wine.

Xu Shu tried counting in his head and then tried counting with his fingers, but soon found himself giving up. The scholar slowly slunk to the floor from his chair and took a long pause.

“Master Xu.” Fa Zheng shook his head. “You have to mean those words. You’re already second guessing yourself._ Are _you going to do whatever it takes? Or will you let yourself—your talents wither away here in the Southlands?” Fa Zheng waited for the answer, but he mulled over the possible outcomes in any case. Xu Shu could sound convincing and agree to start looking for what he lacked, or he could continue lying to himself and get absolutely nowhere.“I hope you do take the strength you’re looking for, and that you do not let it go. Let your allies here know that you too have a great mind that should be taken into account. Don’t ever second guess what you want again.”

This time he did think things over and fell silent, his eyes shifting around slightly as he did so. Xu Shu furrowed his brow.

“I will do whatever it takes.” The scholar stated sincerely and turned his attention back to Fa Zheng. He always thought it would be better for everyone if he was forgotten about; that being unrecoginized for his deeds was a selfless act. But deep down Xu Shu didn't want his name to be lost to time.
