When the younger twin grows up and wants to get married, the lindworm returns and insists that he, as the elder prince, must be married first. When a massive horrible snake with arms lays down the law like that there isn’t really any room for disagreement, but it turns out to be awfully hard to find a bride willing to marry him. The king and queen search far and wide for a woman who will take a husband who is 50 feet long, doesn’t have legs, and may or may not eat his would-be wives when they are appalled by him, but eventually they find a local shepherd’s daughter who is either coerced, a monsterfucker, or just very open-minded and agrees to marry the lindworm.

Depending on the version, the bride either seeks out the advice of a witch or comes up with the idea all by herself, and goes to the bedchamber on her wedding night dressed in many layers of dresses. Her big horrible snake with arms husband is waiting for her and bids her to disrobe, but she asks him to shed a skin as well. Her sexy Russian nesting doll cosplay has so many layers that by the time she is naked, he has shed all of his skins and is 1.) either a sexy naked human dude underneath or 2.) is this meaty blob of helpless worm meat that must be whipped and bathed in chemicals before he transforms into a sexy naked human dude. Either way, they presumably live happily ever after and the younger prince can finally get married.

My European Studies professor decided a few weeks ago to take a Friday and instead of following the syllabus, he spent the entire hour and a half comparing Hitler’s actions from a European perspective to that of what Trump is doing in America. He never repeated a single point, and even used video and photos like this to show the comparison.

To make things better, he had us do an in class assignment for participation points. He first played a clip on youtube of one of Hilter’s speeches, subtitled and 3 minutes long. He then played a clip of one of Trump’s rallies. Our assignment? Copy down every single sentence that matched in translation down on a sheet of paper or a word document that wasn’t repeated. The person with the closest amount to what my professor found got a candy bar.

My professor found, in just three minutes of a speech, that Trump matched 65 different phrases/sentences to that of Hitler’s translation.

Kylo, that was the character that [Rian Johnson] was most excited about getting into and writing, because in the first Star Wars films, Vader was a great villain, but he was never someone you identified with. Whereas, with Kylo, it’s almost like Rey and Kylo are two halves of the protagonist. And, if this is all about the transition from adolescence into adulthood, Kylo is that anger of adolescence.

I didn’t want to ship Eric with Adam. I’ve never been into the whole “bullied person falls in love with their bully because that bully is actually not that bad,” trope. But the thing that Sex Education did, and the reason why I’m now 100% behind this ship is that this show did not try to trivialize Eric’s feelings of fear and it has never cut Adam slack for his behavior. Adam is continuously punished throughout the first season for being a shitty person. His girlfriend dumps him, his friends dump him, he gets punished for cheating on his essay, he gets sent away to military school! Throughout season one, Adam’s treatment by the narrative gets worse and worse because he deserves it. At no point is Adam rewarded for his shitty behavior. Yes the show demonstrates that his father is awful, but does that excuse Adam’s actions? No. The show doesn’t let him off the hook because his father sucks. The show doesn’t cut him slack because he’s a closeted bisexual. He suffers as he should suffer, because he’s not a good person and despite his suffering he chooses his own shitty actions.

In season two, there’s a visible shift in Adam’s behavior and he voices and demonstrates several times that he wants to do better. But that doesn’t mean that Eric will now magically cut him slack or even that the show will. Just because Adam has decided he wants to be a better person doesn’t mean we the audience have to take it at face value, Adam actually has to do better. I love that the show shows that he is good with dogs, but he also vocalizes to Otis that he doesn’t want to hurt Eric, he tells Eric that he’s scared. He gets out of his comfort zone several times to show that he is not only saying he wants to do better, he’s actually trying to do better.

But the thing that really got me–since Eric is my #1 best most beloved character in Sex Education (REMEMBER WHEN MY BOY AND HIS FATHER HAD THAT HEART TO HEART AND HUGGED AND THEN HE DANCED WITH OTIS GOD I LOVE ERIC SO MUCH)–was that Eric didn’t just accept it all. He demanded more. He stood up for himself, he told Adam that Adam was the reason he had a shitty life for a long time and he walked away for the sake of his own mental health. Eric chose himself, and let Adam show that he was really committed by taking his hand in front of the whole school and Adam’s father.
