Big Bend National Park is about to be destroyed.
I know everything is burning right now. There is every issue to worry about. Well, this week the flames have also come for my home.
Big Bend is the most pristine desert we have in the US. It is home to more fauna and flora than Yellowstone. It has the darkest skies in the US. And just two weeks ago, the DHS decided to waive 28 laws to start constructing a border wall through it.
National Environmental Policy Act
Federal Water Pollution Control Act (also known as the Clean Water Act)
National Historic Preservation Act
Migratory Bird Treaty Act
Migratory Bird Conservation Act
Archeological Resources Protection Act
Paleontological Resources Protect Act
Federal Cave Resources Protection Act
National Trails System Act
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
Archeological and Historic Preservation Act
Historic Sites, Buildings, and Antiquities Act
Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
Administrative Procedure Act
Energy Independence and Security Act (Section 438)
National Fish and Wildlife Act
Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act
Farmland Protection Policy Act
Wild and Scenic Rivers Act
Federal Lands Policy and Management Act
DHS has decided all of those laws no longer apply to the Rio Grande corridor through Big Bend National Park.
It will devastate ecosystems. Ruin the skies. And with the ecosystem and skies ruined, it will ruin the livelihoods of the people living there, and the $54 million revenue generated annually by Big Bend tourism.
It won't stop border crossings because no one crosses the border at Big Bend. What it will do is hurt all of us.
