something i've been thinking a bit about regarding season 2 of the pitt is whether or not the choice to open on a shot of robby riding his motorcycle without a helmet actually served the story they were trying to tell.

i loved the rationale that noah wyle provided as to why they decided to do it (in this new york times profile), and i think it does a lot for the front half of the season—sowing some distrust in the audience about the real purpose of robby's sabbatical, making us wonder if his intention is not purely just to take a break, making us worry about his physical safety.

but as the season goes on and the cracks in robby's facade start to show through more and more (the moments with abbot & whitaker in episode 9, his reaction to samira's panic attack in episode 10, the moment at the end of 13 where he suggests to dana that he might not come back, and then ultimately the scenes with duke & abbot in 14 & 15 where he admits to not wanting to be alive anymore), it feels like the tension has already broken.

we knew that robby had a disregard for his safety from moment one. we knew that what he said to people about his sabbatical was not necessarily to be trusted. we knew that, deliberate or not, robby's sabbatical could very much end with him gravely injured or dead. so when he slowly begins to reveal that he's suicidal, it feels like... well, yeah. you're riding a motorcycle without a helmet, as an ER doctor who is fully aware of what the consequences of a motorcycle accident look like. if not at this moment actively suicidal, he's at least halfway there.

i think that's part of why the conversations with robby towards the end of the season felt repetitive to some viewers. because we already knew! we didn't get to fully experience that sinking feeling of dread that the characters in the show did as they realized what was going on with him. by the time it got to that point, we were emotionally affected, sure, but we also felt like those confessions were the undercurrent of everything we'd been seeing from the very beginning of the first episode, and fifteen weeks later they'd lost a little bit of their power.

By season 2 Robby is so deep in self-loathing that it's completely warped his perception of what a reasonable expectation is. Langdon says "you demand [perfection] of yourself" and it's true, he does, but he thinks his failure to achieve it is due to some deep personal defect rather than the expectations being unrealistic. That's why he tries to hold his students, especially the ones he sees a lot of potential in, to standards he can't meet himself. His thought process is "I can't do this because I'm not good enough, but you can because you're better than me." The showrunners have confirmed that Robby's issues go way back and that will be explored more next season; personally I think when he was younger he covered the insecurity and self-loathing with bravado, much like Santos does, which is yet another reason they get along so well. Then he matured and channeled his belief in his own inferiority into training future generations of doctors to surpass him. But now it's metastasized into something so toxic that it's interfering even with that. This also gels with Noah Wyle saying Robby gets frustrated with his students when they don't see themselves as highly as he seems them. In the past I think he was a good mentor, but by the time we meet him he's barely functioning so he gets mad at his students for not living up to their potential because he longer has the patience to help them discover it.
