Signs with saami place names were finally put up in the 1990s, after a long history of the government trying to wipe out saami culture and languages. These signs would get painted over, vandalized, and shot at until they were unreadable. I saw one of them on a museum trip in 7th grade, the saami name was completely destroyed, while the rest of the sign was left alone. I don’t know why I still remember it so well 9 years later
