Ok so I still haven't seen every NMT episode (I know, I'm a fake fan 😔) since I've been watching them with my girlfriend who got me into it. I've just seen up to Abstinence Camp. So these opinions are subject to change once I've seen the rest of the series. Who knows, maybe I'll love Daddy or something lmao

🙃 Favorite NMT Episode

If you asked me like two days ago I would've said Jane's a Car, but it's since been bumped down to 3rd place. Thank god I watched Abstinence Camp the day before getting this ask. It's not the scariest or even the best but man I love Steph and Pete so much you don't understand. I'm keeping myself from gushing about them too much, but going from "oh my god this is het-slop" to "oh my god this is het-gem" over the course of nerdy prudes was an experience. And the second they started talking in Abstinence Camp I had such a big smile on my face. So yeah it's my favorite because it's good, but also because of Lautski bias.

If you're wondering why some parts look messed up I think it's an issue caused by Episode 7's higher frame rate.

Although if you think I don’t appreciate Paul whimpering it out like a sad, wet cat, you don’t know me very well.

It’s not as funny but I greatly enjoy it.

I left a review of Black Friday on Letterboxd and I thought I’d share my thoughts over here. So this is just my review copy/pasted. I gave it 3 stars and I liked it.

Without a doubt the messiest of the StarKid shows I’ve seen so far.

The characters are weak with maybe the exception of Lex and Hannah— but even then they’re hard carried by Black Friday and What if Tomorrow Comes. John and Wilbur’s dynamic is also a lot of fun (the little bit of America is Great Again they play during Made in America gives me life). And Linda. End of sentence.

The music is also super hit or miss. What Do You Say?, Monsters and Men, and both of Tom’s songs kinda suck. As do the majority of the songs in the show. Meanwhile CaliforM.I.A., Feast or Famine, and Adore Me are absolute bangers. Black Friday is beautiful and heartbreaking. Also am I allowed to consider Black Friday and the Monsters and Men reprise to be all one song? Because I do and it’s better for it. And What If Tomorrow Comes is fuckin’ transcendent.

The choreography is absolutely amazing though? Despite how much I hate the song, What Do You Say is visually stunning. This goes for the entire show. It’s the most consistently good part. The stage is also very cool. The stairway with the balcony gives them a very cool space to work with, and they use it to its fullest potential. And the garland being used for Wiggly’s face is an awesome visual.

It’s so weird to me because the core idea of an eldritch horror from another dimension using American consumerism as a means to get into out world and cause destruction and chaos is done super well. Capitalism truly is a horror beyond human comprehension. But the writing of the characters suffers for it, which is especially disappointing since the characters in the other StarKid productions I’ve seen (Twisted, Nerdy Prudes Must Die, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals) are a highlight. But I’m someone who appreciates strong character driven storytelling more than anything. Your mileage may vary depending on how important that is to you.
