Counting Family Members in Japanese
How do you talk about the number of family members you have in Japanese?
ご家族は何人ですか? ごかぞく は なんにん です か? Gokazoku wa nan'nin desu ka? How many people are in your family? (quite formal)
何人家族ですか? なんにん かぞく です か? Nan'nin kazoku desu ka? How many people are in your family? (less formal but still polite)
家族は四人です。 かぞく は よんにん です。 Kazoku wa yon'nin desu. There are four people in my family.
How do you count how many family members you have? Remember to include yourself in the number!
If your family is father, mother, you, and a sibling, or you, a parent, and two siblings, or any combination of four people, you would be a family of four:
四人家族です。 よんにん かぞく です。 Yon'nin kazoku desu. (We are) a family of four.
When discussing siblings, you say how many total siblings there are (including yourself).
兄弟は何人いますか? きょうだい は なんにん います か? Kyoudai wa nan'nin imasu ka? How many siblings do you have?
If you are an only child you can say:
一人子です。 ひとりっこ です。 Hitorikko desu. I am an only child.
If you (a boy, for example) have one brother, you would be two siblings (兄弟/きょうだい/kyoudai):
二人兄弟です。 ふたり きょうだい です。 Futari kyoudai desu. (We are) two siblings. In English: I have one sibling (and we are both male).
If you (a girl, for example) have one sister, you would also be two siblings (姉妹/しまい/shimai):
二人姉妹です。 ふたり しまい です。 (We are) two siblings. In English: I have one sibling (and we are both female).
Note: You can use 兄弟 (kyoudai) to refer to any two siblings, but writing it with the kanji 兄 and 弟 usually implies two males (other brother and younger brother).
There are other variations on the combinations of brother and sister. For example, older sister/younger brother, older brother/younger sister:
姉弟 してい shitei older sister, younger brother
兄妹 けいまい keimai older brother, younger sister
For multiple siblings, if you are a male and have only brothers you can use 兄弟 (kyoudai), and if you are a female and have only sisters you can use 姉妹 (shimai). If you have a mix you can use 兄弟 (kyoudai):
四人兄弟です。 よんにん きょうだい です。 Yon'nin kyoudai desu. (We are) four brothers/siblings. In English: I have three brothers/siblings.
四人姉妹です。 よんにん しまい です。 Yon'nin shimai desu. (We are) four sisters. In English: I have three sisters (and I am a female as well).
In general, if you use 兄弟 (kyoudai) that is the most generic way to say siblings.
兄弟はいますか? きょうだい は います か? Kyoudai wa imasu ka? Do you have siblings?
三人兄弟です。 さんにんきょうだいです。 San'nin kyoudai desu. (We are) three siblings. In English: I have two siblings. (There are three of us).
just to politely note: 四人 is irregular and is pronounced よにん! just like how 4時 is pronounced よじ! :)
大草原不可避 : Keyboard smashing in Japanese
I explained how keyboard smashing in English expresses laughing really hard and she taught me the Japanese equivalent in return!!
As some of you might know, in Japanese, “w” from the word “to laugh” 笑う 「わらう」 is basically like “lol” in Japanese so when there’s a bunch of “w”’s together it looks like this wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
and it looks like a bunch of grass so one slang word to show something is funny is 草 「くさ」 which is the word/kanji for grass so you don’t have to type out a bunch of w’s.
So the step up from 草 is 大草原 「だいそうげん」 which means prairie since there’s a lot more grass.
And if something leaves you laughing so much that you can’t hold it back you could say 大草原不可避 「だいそうげんふかひ」 which basically means “inevitable prairie”.
The “inevitable part”, 不可避 「ふかひ」 in this phrase means laughter is inevitable and you can’t help but laugh.
So ‘touch grass’ hits different in Japan huh
草 is just a fascinating character. In Chinese, 草 (also means grass) is often used as a less dirty homophone of 肏, which means fuck. (肏 is constructed by putting 入 (enter) on top of 肉 (meat), and has no other meaning than “fuck”, so it will likely get you censored. People mostly use another homophone 操 to say “fuck”, which feels much less dirty than 肏 and somewhat dirtier than 草. But I digress)
Because there is a great deal of osmosis between Chinese and Japanese internet, a saying you will see on Chinese internet is 草(中日双语), which literally means “grass (Chinese & Japanese bilingual)”, conveying the universal reaction of “fuck that’s funny”
And though “touch grass” won’t get misinterpreted in this vein, you can phrase it like “you need some grass” (你欠草了) to mean “get fucked”

Children’s Day
May 5 is Children’s Day in Japan, which was traditionally known as tango no sekku - celebrating sons and fathers, but in 1948 was changed to include girls and mothers.
On this day koinobori (carp streamers) are hung. It is a tradition in which colorful koi (carp) are depicted on banners and placed up high to flow in the wind. The carp is believed to be a spirited fish, full of energy and power to fight its way up rapidly flowing streams.

Foreigners looking for traditional jobs in Japan may have a tough start, but it's not impossible. Look to these four as examples of success.
When you think of Japan, certain traditionally 日本的に (typically Japanese) things spring to mind. There are some things so ingrained in Japanese culture and history that you can’t help but picture a Japanese person in association with them. And this includes traditionally Japanese jobs.
However, in modern Japanese society, there are certain foreigners who have found a way to make a name for themselves even in traditional jobs in Japan. Despite the worldview that some areas are reserved for native-born Japanese people, these local celebrities have proven otherwise.

Hi! Could you please explain how to use ーさらて いる means? And how to use it? Thank you :)
Hi! So its a passive voice. (what you are doing vs what is being done)Its like the difference between 食べる and 食べられる。Here’s an example:食べる to eat 食べられる to be eaten食べられる to be able to eatする to do される to be doneできる to be able to do 私は日本語を勉強しています。 I am studying Japanese私に日本語は勉強されています。Japanese is being studied by me
されている is also often associated with politeness so its often used like the Keigo (honorific language) for する, to do. (The official So if you want to ask someone what they do (their job), and they’re at a higher rank/age than you, you can say何をされていますか? What do you do?何をされている方ですか?What does that person do?So its a passive voice, which is more polite since its not so direct. Its like, “what is being done by you”, instead of direct “what do you do”Hope that helps :)
