That scene in iron man where Obadiah stane is buttoning up Tony’s shirt (after he shows him the arc reactor) gives me the creep
There’s a lot about obadiah and Tony that are fucking classic tells of a toxic relationship women so often find themselves in. It’s creepy because its real. Same with the scene of obadiah taking the reactor out of a helpless, paralyzed Tonys chest. It’s rape without the sex. It’s the nightmare so many of us have lived or live in fear of. I’m honestly so glad they made Tony to be the “damsel in distress” if only for the fact so many more people can now realize these things.
“It’s rape without the sex” That scene always gave me the absolute creeps and this post really finally helped me put my finger on why that was. Especially as he had essentially been roofied.
Yeeeeeup. everything about it has always made me see direct parallels to sexual assault. i hate it and it makes me sick to my stomach but it’s such an important and masterfully done piece of cinema.
tony has been incapacitated. his consent cannot be given and yet he is aware of whats happening. obadiah is gloating over him - and it doesn’t help matters that he’s almost straddling tony, only furthering his power play. and not only is he gloating, but he’s blaming tony for this. it’s tony’s fault he’s in this situation. furthermore, obadiah was someone he trusted like family, and about the last person he would expect this from. and for the cherry on top, the camera is off center and tilted, almost putting us in tony’s perspective, making everything feel just so many kinds of uncomfortable as he’s being assaulted.
Thank you.
THANK YOU.
I’m honestly glad I was not the only one skeeved out by this because honestly - I’ve been wanting to say it for years, but I was always terrified that someone would say I was just reading into it too much.
I mean…let’s be frank (especially if we are talking about parallels to rape/sexual assault):
Tony was a playboy - he was not shy about his drinking, sexual history, or lifestyle. He had garnered a reputation for it. While fun loving and a good time kind of guy, he makes sure that consent is present during any liaison.
Here’s Obediah - this huge wall of a guy, acting like a friend and mentor. It gives him an in to be close, touchy-feely under the guise of a friend. Tony trusts him, hence why the closeness doesn’t bother him. That’s just how Obie is! Right? Right….
Tony has a traumatic encounter that changes his entire life….and no one takes him seriously. Pepper, Rhodey, Obediah - they are all guilty of trying to tell him that he just needs to sit back and get over it/get his mind straight/threaten to walk out on him because they think he’s crazy.
Huh….what does that sound like? Sounds like dismissal - a regrettably loathsome reaction many have towards victims of trauma and while not malicious (except for established douchebag Obediah), it can make bad situations worse and gives Obediah the perfect in for Tony’s downfall (the injunction, claiming it’s for his own good, all that jazz…exerting a shit ton of power over Tony and simultaneously trying to strip Tony of what power he has left)
To make matters worse - the scene itself where Obediah assaults Tony: Tony is alone. He is vulnerable. Obediah overpowered him, incapacitated him, but left him fully aware of what was going on. He penetrated him without consent (the mechanism literally punched in and pulled his “heart” out), gas lit him to hell and back by using not only his own past but his father’s past to justify his treatment bring “deserved”…..and then leaving him broken and for dead.
The reason a lot of people didn’t view it that way: we don’t normally see a man - especially an outgoing superhero type - being stripped of his agency in a brutally visceral manner. Its s shocking scene to begin with….but it gradually gets worse when you put it through the lens of a rape victim.
If that isn’t a giant parallel for sexual assault, I don’t know what is.
Oh and the fact obadiah has basically been grooming tony since he was a teen, robbing him of bodily autonomy, pressuring him and forcing him into situations he doesn’t particularly want to be in, and always asserting his dominance with grabbing/holding/touching, or in some cases like OP pointed out, even dressing him. Obie is a predator in every sense of the word, and way too similar to how a rapist behaves for it to be a coincidence.
I hate, hate, hate this scene. It makes me so uncomfortable that I can barely watch it. IM1 has some of the most vicious, brutal scenes in the MCU and glosses over much less than the following ones.
It’s a brilliant movie but a painful one as soon as you look beyond the shiny armor.
okay i dont normally reblog stuff like this, but i’ve mentioned in tags tons of times that their entire dynamic creeped me out. I’d never talked about it this in depth before but yeah, he definitely used touch as manipulation, and I believe he touched tony more than any other character this entire movie
(yes i spent way too much time making that.)
When Tony gets back from Afghanistan, gets out of the car with the burgers, Obadiah has at least one of his hands on him the entire way into the building. As someone else mentions – he buttons up tony’s shirt which - yeah tony has a busted arm, but he unbuttoned it relatively easily – so the creep factor still applies. and then you’ve got the other examples too. Also the fact that they’re business partners//mentor/mentee//father/son dynamic …. and obadiah deadass calls tony shirtless. like i dont know much about grown men but im pretty sure thats not that common even among friends.
and anyway if we look at the other characters who touch tony in this movie, it’s rhodey and pepper and christine. Tony in this movie doesn’t initiate touch nearly as much – he usually reacts to it (e.g. even though he’s the ‘playboy’ christine is the one who takes the lead in sex. rhodey is the one who initiates almost all of their contact, etc). after this movie that changes. You can definitely see him start to initiate almost all touch, except with pepper and rhodey (e.g. him poking bruce, him slapping steves hand off him, but putting one on steve). this is definitely a way of asserting contol over a situation – idk if the writers did it purposefully…probably not, but it is interesting. one could argue, i suppose that afghanistan/torture is the cause, but….i think him being scarred by obadiah is more likely.
also, Obadiah used tony’s name. A Lot. We don’t really think about it bc with the Avengers it’s always last name, last name, last name. (the ones who call him tony are easy to notice – fury, pepper, rhodey, sometimes steve). But Obadiah uses Tony’s name a lot more than seemingly necessary. And we all know calling people by their first names is a way of acknowledging them as a person, but also it also indicates familiarity/fondness aka a bond. Someone compiled a video of it.

Best MCU kiss EVER , and we don’t have the video!? c’mon, I feel so robbed

YES TONY!!!
And just think, RDJ was supposed to have improvised most of this! I love this part so much! I admit I have to wonder what was originally scripted for this scene? It might have been good but apparently no matter what else they are, the Russos were wise enough to turn RDJ loose in this scene because my word it is spectacular! It’s really everything I have wanted since Civil War and what happened in that movie! I just see myself playing this on loop when I finally have Endgame on DVD!
(And as I was saying even before we found out RDJ improvised this scene… this scene alone makes me say give the man an Oscar already!!!)

#the perfect househusband
I saw this and literally my first thought was, “Tony Stark and I wash dishes exactly the same way!” Seriously, if you’re not spraying water all over the place, then you’re not doing it right. It was such a tiny moment in the movie, but it was so quintessentially Tony.
#IT’S HIS COPING MECHANISM LEAVE HIM BE ( @elektranhatcios)
pepperony week ➜ day 2: pre-relationship "Give me a smooch for good luck. I might not make it back.“
I love the way he looks at her kiss the helmet, he is so jealous and cute at the same time because he wants her to kiss him like that. so adorable, so cute, it’s both cute and sexy at the same time but that is Tony.
okay but can we take a minute to appreciate tony stark’s Soft Dad™️ aesthetic in avengers endgame?? the cardigans. the oversized sweatshirts. the sweatpants. he rly shed the Billionaire Gucci aesthetic & i am 3000% here for it

@kayytx
are you telling me…… that not only did rdj improvise the whole “zero zip nada no trust liar” scene, but also that cevans’ heartbroken reaction was genuine? wow okay i need to sit down
a punch in the face would be kinder tbh
I am so so grateful for this scene tbh, I’m so glad RDJ knows Tony so well and cares about him so much. Steve sadly isn’t often hit by the narrative when he does wrong (Tony is constantly dealing with consequences of his actions, Spidey as well, Thor’s first movie was all about that, etc etc), so having this scene here actually makes his character so much more likeable!
And by that I mean that without a scene of Steve being metaphorically punched in face, we could easily feel as though Steve never looked back on his actions, including splitting the Avengers apart (whatever your opinion on the Sokovia Accords, Tony does have a point that they should have dealt with it/Bucky/the super soldiers as a team). But with this? While I find it sad that Steve rejected Tony’s offer to stay for lunch and stuff like that, we -can- interpret it as Steve just being physically unable to relax even for a second because he’s so consumed by guilt over what Tony told him all those years ago, in this specific scene. It is, to me, a preferable explanation as to why he kept on fighting even with a broken shield and no chance at winning when he’s faced with Thanos. Steve already had so many heroic badass moments, and I think interpreting his character this way- desperate to atone for a mistake- allows for a more nuanced analysis of his character. The not moving on? It’s not just about the vanished, it’d be about not being able to be at peace with the one time he made a decision he now sees was the wrong one.
… Obviously this is just a way to interpret Steve’s arc in this movie, and honestly I still dont get his final scene, but it did allow me to make peace with his character, given that he’s been throwing me off since Civil War. And it all boils down to this fantastic bit of acting, a single scene that opened a whole new way of reading both Tony and Steve. Bless RDJ’s improvs tbh, they never fail to improve a movie to me.
I love that interpretation that Steve’s actions are guided by his need for atonement. You can view his decision to start a support group in this light too; Tony chews him out for abandoning him and the Avengers when they needed him the most, for going it alone and fracturing the team instead of working with them. So in the aftermath of the snap, as an act of atonement, he decides that he will be there as an anchor for anyone who needs it in their grief over all that was broken and lost – because he didn’t see Tony’s grief and trauma all those years ago, because he broke apart their family, because he just wasn’t there for Tony.
Exactly!! And honestly this scene is just so good for Tony too. He’s just so used to always taking the heat for everything, simply because all the way back in IM 1 he was indeed kind of an an uncaring jerk, that he often allows the blame to be put just on him, even when it isn’t.
Like with Ultron (which yes, he was its main creator, but his mind had been seriously messed with by Wanda AND he didn’t build it on his own- don’t tell me Bruce couldn’t have said no when one of the best things about Avengers!Bruce was the delicious fact that Bruce always knew exactly what kind of power he had and a part of him almost seemed to relish going green), or with the avengers’ Civil War (again, not about the Accords here - I actually side with both men here, the heroes should work with the government but if the government starts being crappy then they fight against it - so much as the fact that Steve chooses to break everything right away instead of even trying for a compromise). Definitely not saying Tony is blameless, one of the things I like about him so much is how nuanced he is, but he always shoulders the fall for it himself. Especially with Ultron.
So when everyone tried to pin the blame of the Civil War just on him, he at first just shouldered it, but when he -finally- cracked he was finally able to tell everyone how he felt. It must have been so freeing to him, I always love how he collapses after he does that, as if putting it out there is that overwhelming. Tony’s such an avoidant kind of guy (I think the first time we see him cry in a movie like, ever, was in IW after the combined blow of thanos winning + watching Peter die?), and he bottles things up so much, I pretty much -felt- the relief of this moment with him.
I could seriously go on about this scene forever. It’s quite possibly my favorite one of the movie (I don’t really care for the Mjolnir thing and I Am Iron Man just makes me sad, actually), exactly because it’s not devised as a “heyyy look at this cool scene/easter egg”. It’s raw, and it’s painful, and it’s one of the most human scenes of this whole movie.. Which was always a very particular trait of the Iron Man trilogy. Ughhh. I can’t get enough of it.

In this scene, Robert Downey Jr. improvised the discussion between Tony and Steve in the Avengers Endgame!
he deserves the oscar.

Tony Stark – King of making 100% relatable faces
The Avengers (2012)
The thing that always struck me about this scene is how Thor is like 100% certain Loki would want to end all that madness.
Our mcu Loki is not the Loki of comics. Thor just k n o w s this chaos and fire and death is not characteristic of his brother. I just think this scene says so much about how Thor thinks of Loki. And THEN Loki actually responds to Thor’s expectations by saying he thinks it too late. He doesn’t say ‘you don’t know me’, he doesn’t laugh, or sneer. He lets Thor know he feels helpless in that moment. It’s sweet.
I hold that mcu Loki’s tendency toward chaos and mischief is more mirthful and vindictive than deadly even if he is painted in other ways.
