A watercolor mystery!
This 1618 commentary on the Institutes of Justinian, an introduction to Roman law, has an unexpected image when you open the front cover. "Cornelius Hirt" is written alongside the painting of the figure, and while a family of German painters from the period has the same surname, we can't confirm anything about the painting for sure. We hope you also love this surprising work of art!

Happy Pride Month!
These photos come from Jack Baker's ('72) campaign for Minnesota Student Association president in 1971. He did become MSA president that year, and also in 1971, Baker and his partner, James McConnell, became the first same-sex couple to be legally married. Baker was a dedicated activist and was involved in some of the earliest pride events in the country that were held in Minneapolis in the 1970s.
In the second image, Baker stands next to Giovanna D'Agostino, "Mama D," a Twin Cities restauranteur and cookbook author. She was known for her community engagement, including serving free meals on St. Joseph's day from the 1960s to early 1980s at her son's restaurant in Dinkytown and then at her own restaurant, Mama D's Risorante Italiano, which she opened in St. Paul.

Coincidentally, we were talking about some of our state registers this week. These small books contain lists of attornies and other legal professionals in the state, and they also often include almanacs. These are two earlier Connecticut registers (1789 and 1808), and we've highlighted the June pages, which include the daylight hours and weather predictions around the time of the summer solstice. It's also fun to see the names of the time (Philo Ruggles might be hard to beat, but let us know your favorite!).
It certainly feels like summer here in the Twin Cities!
Enjoy a few summery clips from Quaere, the law school's student newspaper from 1975-1997. The first two images come from the 1976 June paper, which highlighted Quaere's original board of editors who graduated that year. The final image commemorates the end of the law school softball team's season in June of 1977.
More Clarence Darrow items have arrived! The attorney's traveling trunk, made by J.H. McNamara Trunk Works Co. in Chicago, nicely complements the recent material we received related to Clarence and Ruby's travel. Rivets in the side form Clarence's initials, "CSD," and there is also one travel sticker listing several hotels in the White Mountains in New Hampshire that were owned by Barron, Merrill, & Barron. The donation also included a couple of handkerchiefs embroidered with Darrow's name and several new letters.
We are very grateful for the donation, thanks to a descendant of Darrow's second wife, Ruby!

We recently received an exciting donation to our Clarence Darrow collection from a relative of Darrow's wife, Ruby. The donation includes letters to and from Ruby and an assortment of items related to the couple's travel in 1929 and 1930. Here are a few close-ups of their joint passport that was issued in 1929, which notes that Clarence is accompanied by Ruby and includes a photo of them together.
We've been spending a lot of time transcribing letters, sorting through postcards, and piecing together details about Clarence and Ruby's travel! For more details about the donation, take a look at our blog!
Congratulations, Class of 2026! The Law School's commencement will take place tomorrow, and we wish all the graduates the best as they celebrate their hard work and begin their careers.
As a throwback, enjoy some photos from the graduation of the class of 1993, when a large globe was prominently displayed in front of Northrop Auditorium!
Happy Mother's Day weekend!
In honor of all moms, we're highlighting Kati Sasseville, who became the Law School Council's first woman president in 1972. Her campaign posters urging students to "Vote for Mama Sass" partly referred to the fact that she was a mother of six by the time she was in law school.
Sasseville went on to become the first woman to serve on the Minnesota Public Service Commission, eventually serving as Commission Chair. She remained very active in the legal community, throughout her life running for Congress in the 7th Congressional District, the State House, and the State Senate.
Pictured above are two portraits of Sasseville, along with her presenting the "Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award" to William Lockhart at her graduation in 1973.

To kick off finals, we pulled out William Fulbeck's "A Direction or Preparative to the Study of Law: Wherein is shewed, what things ought to be observed and used of them that are addicted to the study of the Law, and what on the contrary part ought to be eschewed and avoided," (1620).
Fulbeck (1560-1603) was a bencher at Gray's Inn and published this book in 1600 to offer advice to aspiring law students. One piece of advice given is to never study in the evening, for "if a man study soon after supper, the nourishment is resolved into gross vapors which doe fill the body and are very noisome obstupatives to the senses. For the meate being destitute of heat and spirit, doth ware raw and doth putrify in the Stomach. So that the brain is offended and our study greatly hindered and impeached."
We think you're probably okay studying after dinner, but to each their own. Be wary of those gross vapors!

Today is the Law Library's annual baseball party! These snapshots come from a sheet of negatives from the first event celebrating the start of baseball season in 2004.
April Fools!
This photo from the summer of 1941 shows someone's joke, a car left on the steps of Fraser Hall, the former law school building. Professor Maynard Pirsig, also Dean of the law school from 1948-1955, snapped this great photo of students gathered around it.
Since 2002, the law school student group "TORT" (Theatre of the Relatively Talentless) has put on an annual parody musical entirely made by law students. These photos come from TORT's second production, "Law Wars, Episode IV: Parody is Not An Infringement" (2004). The show often includes law school faculty appearances and special guests, and in this case, Walter Mondale was presented with his very own Fighting Mondales hockey jersey.
Tonight and tomorrow, TORT puts on their 2026 show, "Moot Girls." Break a leg, TORT!
Tonight, the Fighting Mondales, the University of Minnesota Law School's hockey team, take on the University of St. Thomas Fighting Apostles to defend the Golden Gavel!
As a throwback, check out the sports section of Quaere, one of the law school's student newspapers, from March of 1978. Prior to the law school's move to Mondale Hall, the law school's home in Fraser Hall inspired the team's former name, the Fraser Flyers.
The first English woman to print books under her own name!
At our open house last week, we featured several items for Women's History Month, including this 1540 printing of Magna Carta. Elisabeth (Pickering) Redman (1510-1562) was married to Robert Redman, a printer of law books in London. This copy was printed after his death and under Elisabeth's name, "imprinted at London in Fleet Street..at the sign of the George next to Saint Dunston's church" according to the colophon.
Thirteen of Robert Redman's books were printed within nine months of his death, and ten besides this one were under Elisabeth's name.

A flashback from the archives!
This week in 1986, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) invited civil rights activist and Georgia Senator Julian Bond (1940-2015) to speak at the Law School for a Black History Month event.
Bond co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), served in both the Georgia House and Senate for a total of twenty years, and served as chairman of the NAACP from 1998-2010.
