He went down to the washroom, deciding a bath was in order. A half an hour later he had boiled enough water to give him a warm soak in the tub. He sat there until the water grew cold, mulling over his troubles. When he had finished he stood before the mirror, a towel wrapped loosely around his waist. Jekyll was there again, smug as ever.
"Wipe that stupid grin off your face before I--"
"Before you what?" Jekyll shot back. It was a confidence he didn't usually have talking to his other self. "What can you possibly threaten me with? You've taken everything from me. What is left for you to destroy?"
"Plenty," Hyde defended, though his heart wasn't in it. "Your new little pet, for example."
"You won't hurt him. I'm not convinced you could. Your weakness is showing, Edward--"
"Weakness!"
"I was wrong about you, perhaps. I didn't think it was possible but…You care about him. In your own strange way."
"Does that make me weak, doctor?" Hyde mused. "Then perhaps we were both wrong. Perhaps you are the stronger half, after all. The way you push away anyone who dares to get too close. Is that what strength looks like?"
There was silence after that. A long, painful silence filled with uncomfortable thoughts.
"Your dear Gabriel will return tomorrow," Hyde reminded him. "And then we will see how strong you really are."
