Through Offred’s and the other handmaid’s story, and the oppressive society of Gilead, Margaret Atwood’s work mirrors the real world struggles of power, gender rights and environmental crises. The regime in Gilead uses fear propaganda, and the suppression of individual freedoms to maintain its control. Which remains similar to the struggles we continue to face in our own world. Therefore poses the question, In what ways does The Handmaid’s Tale display Gilead’s oppressional structures to reveal how totalitarian structures, gender inequality, and environmental instability intersect; and how are similar dynamics unfolding in today’s world?
This blog series will dive into how the TV show portrays the methods of Gilead’s authoritarian government and how it parallels the societal issues we face today, such as political manipulation, gender inequality, and environmental disasters. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid's Tale presents a warning about the manipulative methods used by Gilead’s authoritarian government to maintain its absolute power and control. The TV show’s portrayal of a dystopian society and how its governed by fear and control which resonates with the issues society faces today, including obedience within society portrayed through the harsh conditions handmaids endure, the normalization of deprivation of women's rights through the stripping of the handmaids identity, and the decrease of infertility used as a cornerstone for Gilead to justify their suppressive policies.
