Strange Happenstance
Happy Skin Deep Day! Crazy to believe it's been fourteen years! Here's to another fourteen. Here's my contribution to Fluffapalooza '26!
Summary: Mr. Gold receives a second chance on Valentine's Day in a cursed Storybrooke. Will he be able to use it to his advantage to secure his happy ending?
Word count: 5163
Also on AO3, as jeanielovesfangirling
A trilling alarm pierced the silence of the early morning. Mr. Gold groaned as he rolled over to shut it off ā he really should get an alarm that was less grating on his nerves. He slowly sits up, his left leg aching worse than normal. His bed, whileĀ comfyĀ ā wait.Ā His bed?Ā
Yesterday,Ā Mr. GoldĀ had gone to sleep in a jail cell, courtesy of Miss SwanāsĀ impedimentĀ ofĀ his vigilante justice. It was illogical ā impossible ā for him to be in his Victorian manor, free as the north wind. He was sure itĀ wasnātĀ a dream; everything had been too vivid, evenĀ for his seeing.Ā
Surveying the room,Ā Mr. Gold found nothing out of the ordinary. Everything was as it should be. Grabbing his cane, he began his morning routine. InĀ the half hour it took him to getĀ ready,Ā nothing had happened. It was strange ā he was half expecting the sheriff to come busting down his door (not unlike herĀ charmingĀ father).Ā Ā
He debated staying at the house to avoid the public eye, but his curiosity got better of him. He put on the sly pawnbrokerās guise and confidentlyĀ made his way to the Cadillac and drove into town. No one stopped him, no one stared, no one did anything.Ā Peculiar.Ā
He opened the shop and waited for something to happen. Storybrooke was slow, yes, but the curse was starting to crack, and Miss Swan was making waves. Regina was surelyĀ panicking about that.Ā ItādĀ been unfortunate that he had to tell her, but everything comes with a price.
Ā Speak of the devil. Regina Mills walked into the pawnshop, haughty, and self-righteous. āWhat can I do for you, Madam Mayor?ā Mr. Goldās eyes gleaned, waiting to see what the queen wanted. Their game of cat and mouse had escalated ā what was going to be her first move now that she knew thatĀ he knew his true name?Ā
"I came by to ask about the burglar that broke into your home. How unfortunate that a thief has found themselves at work in Storybrooke, no? IĀ think the sheriff department should have been more proactive and prepared for such incidents.āĀ
That gave Mr. Gold a pause. Regina came into the shop yesterday to say the sameĀ thing.Ā SheādĀ tried to get a rise out of him, to reveal information. ItĀ didnātĀ work. But why is she asking again? It seemsĀ rather dullĀ for Regina. And why was she wearing the same grey pantsuit as yesterday? In the 28 years of the curse,Ā sheādĀ never repeatedĀ an outfit. Something strange was going on. So, he responded the same way as yesterday. āIt was rather unfortunate, yes.āĀ
Regina gave noĀ indicationĀ that they hadĀ this very conversation already. āI heard that all your items were recovered at least, right?ā Her eyes gleam withĀ predatory satisfaction.Ā
Mr. Gold was very suspicious of the whole scenario. Nothing was making any sense whatsoever. HeĀ wasnātĀ going to let Regina have the upper hand, though. NotĀ this time. āYes, everything was recovered in a timely manner,āĀ heĀ said, smirking. āMiss Swan was quite efficient in her recovery of myĀ things. Did you know it was Moe French?ā Bile rose in his throat as he said the name, but he acted like nothing had happened.Ā
Reginaās seemed to shrink back, and her eyes wavered in confusion. She quickly recovered, her smarmy politician smile gracing her features. āHow fortunate! Though, I never would have suspected Mr. French capable ofĀ such a crime.āĀ
"Desperation causes many unsuspecting criminals, dearie.āĀ
Regina nodded awkwardly before retreating to the door. The conversation had not gone as she had planned. āGoodbye, Mr. Gold.āĀ
The bell rang out in the store as Mr. Gold thought about everything that had occurred. Regina did not remember anything fromĀ yesterday ā he was certain of it. But that left moreĀ questions than answers. HeĀ wasnātĀ sure what was going on. But he was starting to wonder if the right question wasĀ whenĀ was he?Ā
.....
Grannyās Diner had never been Mr. Goldās favorite establishment in Storybrooke. The food was mediocre and the gossip mill was infamous.Ā ButĀ it would helpĀ himĀ establishĀ what day of the week it was.Ā Something strange was going on, but Grannyās specials ran on a tighter schedule than the clock tower. Each day of the week had its own specialty. No matter what week,Ā Wednesdays are always spaghetti and meatballs.Ā
Upon opening theĀ dinerĀ door, Mr. Goldās eyes narrowed on the chalk sign.Ā ItĀ read,Ā āTaco Tuesday SpecialāĀ and āValentineās Veal.āĀ
Damn.
Somehow,Ā heādĀ traveled back inĀ time toĀ yesterday. Or rather, today.
HeādĀ somehowĀ retainedĀ him memory, but no one else did. Otherwise, Emma would have tracked him down and arrested him again. And ReginaĀ wouldnātĀ have been flaunting that heĀ didnātĀ receive all his items back from the sheriff... Mr. Gold nearly swore in the diner. Regina still had his chipped cupĀ in that infernal purse of hers.Ā
āMr. Gold?ā Ruby Lucas asked, hands on her hips. āAre you ordering anything or just going to glower the whole day?āĀ
Mr. Gold snapped out of his thoughts to answer her. āIāllĀ have coffee. Black. To go.āĀ Ruby rolled her eyes but went to fill the order, leavingĀ Gold toĀ think alone.Ā
......
Gold sat in his car outside the sheriffās station, nursing his coffee. His plan was simple ā question Moe French about the incident in exchange for dropping charges. He wanted to know why Regina put him up to it. ItĀ seemed to beĀ too much of a coincidence forĀ his liking.Ā
Why would Regina wager so much on his sentimentality? Sure, he lovedĀ ā loves āBelle, but his heart was notoriously black.Ā A young woman dead forĀ thirtyĀ years was a strangeĀ thing to dreg up to the surface.Ā
As he walked into the station, he was greeted by Miss Swanās verbal lashing. āGold! What are you doing here? I got all your stuff back. Just leave me alone for five minutes?āĀ
He raised his hands in a peaceful gesture. āIām just here to talk to theĀ thief, dearie,ā he nods towards Moe Frenchās cell, āPreferably alone?āĀ
"You want me to leave you alone with the prisoner? IĀ donātĀ trust that, Gold.ā Emma glared at him, not wavering.Ā
"Perhaps youĀ would be convinced if I were to conveniently schedule a town board meeting tomorrow? Right after school? It would give a young boy some time to wander where he pleases without his mother.āĀ He felt slightly guilty using Henry as bait, but he needed to know what Moe French knew.Ā
Emma hesitates and Gold knowsĀ heāsĀ won. āFine. But 15 minutes. No more, okay?āĀ
"Understood, Miss Swan."
He approached the cell as Emma left the room. Moe French sat uncharacteristically still asĀ he did so. āMr. French.āĀ
"Mr. Gold?ā Moe asked quietly. He knew whateverĀ this conversation wrought was not going to be pretty.Ā
āI have a business preposition, Mr. French. One IĀ thinkĀ youādĀ be interested in.āĀ Gold smiled like a shark. āI want information about you in exchange for your freedom... if you answer all my questions,Ā IāllĀ drop the charges. And grant you aĀ three-weekĀ extension on your defaulted loan.āĀ
Whatever the florist had been expecting,Ā this was not it.Ā He was not a high-profile member of Storybrooke. His life had been a sad, but simple affair. Why the pawnbroker wanted to know about it was a mystery. ButĀ the informationĀ in exchange forĀ his entire livelihood was too good to be true.Ā So, like the fool he was, Moe French accepted. āI agree to your terms.āĀ
āExcellent.ā He sits down on the couch besideĀ the cell. āWhen did you move to Storybrooke?āĀ
Moe smiled, before he thought about it. It was hard toĀ think about his childhood. It was allĀ rather foggy. āI believe IĀ was born here.āĀ
Mr. Gold nodded. So, Reginaās curseĀ wasnātĀ that thorough with everyoneās backstory. His modern story wasĀ rather lackingĀ as well ā not so much as a first name.Ā āWhy did you choose to become a florist? A man like yourselfĀ doesnātĀ seem to be one into gardening much.āĀ
"That IāmĀ not,ā Moe agreed. āMy wife loved flowers and it was her dream. When she died,Ā itāsĀ all I had left of her. Well, besides our daughter.Ā Now, it pays theĀ bills. Somewhat.āĀ
āMy condolences, Mr. French. Though, IĀ didnātĀ know you were married or had a daughter. Would you mind telling me about them?āĀ
The floristĀ froze.Ā He lookedĀ at the wallĀ before backĀ to Mr. Gold.Ā He didĀ this three or four timesĀ before answering.Ā āThey were the center of my world,ā he let out a little sniffle.Ā āMy wife, Rose, loved to travel.Ā SheādĀ been flying back from Sydney when the plane crashed. No one knows what happened toĀ the plane. It just disappeared off the map.āĀ
Mr. Gold watched pain flit across his face. He knew the feeling well, so his voice wasĀ perhaps aĀ little softer than normal. āAnd your daughter?āĀ
Moe started sobbing. āI failed her. I failed her. After her mother died, IĀ didnātĀ know what to do. I lost myself a little. IĀ had oneĀ too manyĀ light nightsĀ atĀ theĀ RabbitĀ Hole.Ā She... she slipped into a dark place. IfĀ IādĀ been there...āĀ
āIfĀ youādĀ been there what?āĀ
āMy precious Belle, so bright, withered and crumbled without me doing aĀ thing.Ā I was too busy drowning my sorrows.Ā She started failing her classes at university.Ā She stopped taking an interest in anything.Ā I took her to the doctors, and they admitted her to the psych ward.Ā They said they could help her, Gold.āĀ
Mr. Goldās heart stuttered at the mention of Belle. ReginaĀ hadnātĀ changed her name. The thought of Belle losing herself, even if it was a falsehood, hurt. āAnd from your tone, I presume theyĀ didnāt?āĀ
āNo,ā Moe spat. āTheyĀ didnāt.Ā SheādĀ been receiving treatmentsĀ for a pitiful three weeks when I got the letter. They found her in the shower āĀ she'dĀ done herself in.Ā I never got to say goodbye or a funeral. They cremated the remains before I even got to see her.āĀ
Moeās face warred between anger, sadness, and regret. Gold found himself regretting taking out vengeance on the man in the other version of the day. The pain of a parent losing a child was too close for comfort. āIāmĀ very sorryĀ to have brought up the memories, Mr. French.Ā IāllĀ stop bothering you now.Ā IāllĀ talk with Miss Swan to have you released.āĀ
Moe wiped his eyes on his sleeves. āThank you, Mr. Gold. IĀ donātĀ know why you asked but thank you.Ā It was nice to talk about them, even if it hurts.āĀ
Mr. Gold nodded andĀ left. The conversation with Moe French had been painful but gave him some new leads.Ā This version seemed to conflict withĀ the Enchanted Forest side. Rumplestiltskin had known Belleās death had come by the actions of King Maurice. MoeĀ French, however, seemed just as distraught by his daughterās death as he had. SomethingĀ wasnātĀ adding up ā again.Ā
......
Mr. Gold found himself outside the library. He needed to look at the town records ā old newspapers, maps, and health records. He needed to see if Belle French had ever graced the streets of Storybrooke ā even if it was just inĀ peopleās memories.Ā
He opened the library doors and was overtaken by the musty scent of the abandoned room. His nose wrinkled in distaste beforeĀ he entered. He went to the filing cabinets along the back wall and started searching.Ā
Nothing was coming up of any interest. Everything was about the banality of a small town ā a high school science fair, tax votes, and community day posters.Ā Gold slammed the fifth cabinet shut.Ā HeādĀ been looking for over an hour to no avail.Ā Ā
Taking a deep breath in, he continued scouring over the files. He looked through half a dozen more before finding it ā an admittance to the StorybrookeĀ psychologicalĀ ward for one Belle French.Ā
Storybrooke? Gold had assumed Moeās memories had included a ward outside of town, much like how his wifeās death was in the Pacific. Storybrooke had no psych wardĀ ā none on any mapĀ heādĀ seen. Why was a dead woman admitted to a false psych ward?Ā Where would it haveĀ been, ifĀ it existed? Moe mentioned doctors...Ā
Gold put everything back to where it had been. HeĀ didnātĀ need Regina to knowĀ heādĀ been sneaking around. Leaving the library, he returned toĀ his store. Before heĀ went gallivanting off to the hospital, he was going to take precautions. Someone ā mostĀ likely ReginaĀ ā had taken great lengths to cover the existence of the ward. He opened the vault behind the counter and pulled out a revolver. HeĀ wasnātĀ taking any chances.Ā
......
The hospital was eerily quiet. For a place that was supposed to be returning patients to life, Gold felt the years being sucked out of him. He shivered as he walked over to the front desk.Ā
"May I help you, Mr. Gold?ā The secretary asked. If she thought it was strange that he wasĀ there,Ā she gave noĀ indication.Ā
The lie flows smoothly off his tongue.Ā āI had a question about admitting hurt individuals to the psych ward?Ā IāveĀ been receiving some complaints from tenantsĀ about Old Peter ā they sayĀ heāsĀ been crying wolf about someĀ aliens?āĀ
"PsychĀ ward? Mr. Gold, IĀ thinkĀ youāreĀ mistaken,ā her eyes are wide and panicked, āThereĀ isnātĀ a psych ward inĀ this hospital.āĀ
āUnderstood, dearie. But is there any accommodation we could make for dear Peter?ā Mr. Gold continued the falsehood, pretending to be a concerned landlord.Ā
āI can call Dr. Whale? He might be able to help us find a solution.āĀ
āThank you, dearie.āĀ He tapped his good foot against the tiled floor as he listened to the telephone conversation. It seemed to drone on forever andĀ ever ā back and forth ā as the secretary asked for Whale. The quack had always put Gold on edge.Ā
Finally! āNo, thatāll be all.āĀ Ā
He moved over to the side of the waiting room for Whale to make an appearance.Ā HeādĀ been standing there for a minute or two when his phone rang ā Regina. Gold narrowed his eyes ā the mayor never used the phone with him. She always preferred bringing her issues face to face. Given the circumstancesĀ heādĀ found himself in, Gold ignored it.Ā The phone rang again. He ignored it.
Goldās phone rang aĀ third time before Whale showed up. His face was drained of color, and he kept fidgeting with a pen. He reekedĀ withĀ desperation. āMr. Gold? You wanted to speak with me?ā
Ā āYes, I did. About a tenantās complaint. Old Peter Grimsey has been talking about aliens andĀ theĀ soon to be hostileĀ takeover. I was wondering ifĀ we could discuss a plan for him to stay here? For his safety and the community,ā he flashes a coy smile, āPreferably in private ā we want to protect Mr. Grimseyās information, donāt we?āĀ
WhaleĀ nodded but kept fidgeting.Ā āI appreciate your concern about the local concerns, Mr. Gold,ā he directed them into a patientās room that was blindingly white and smelled of ammonia.Ā āWhat would you like toĀ discuss aboutĀ Mr. Grimseyās case?āĀ
āThe psychological ward here at the hospital couldĀ probably doĀ him some good, no?āĀ
If the doctor had beenĀ paleĀ earlier, heĀ wasĀ deathly white now. āThe psychĀ ward? WeĀ donātĀ have aĀ wardĀ here...āĀ
āDonātĀ lie to me, Whale. We both knowĀ itāsĀ not ReginaĀ calling the shotsĀ inĀ this town.Ā IādĀ suggest you choose your next words very carefully.āĀ
Whale took a fortified breath before repeating himself. āThat wasnāt a good answer, dearie.ā Gold pulled the revolver out from under his suit jacket.Ā
āNow, now, Mr. Gold.Ā LetāsĀ not be too rash.āĀ
āIāmĀ not beingĀ rash.Ā YouāveĀ lied to me several times now. So,Ā it seems youĀ need some persuasion,ā he nodded to the revolver barrel. āTell me everything you know about the psychology ward ofĀ this hospital.ā
The doctor choked over his words, trying to keep his voice steady. āThere never was a psych ward, but thatĀ doesnātĀ mean weĀ havenātĀ taken patients before.ā
"Some honesty, doctor, splendid.ā Goldās voice darkens. āWhat happened to Belle French?āĀ
The doctor was silent. His eyes moved around the room like rabid dogs, trying to find anything to focus on and failing. Gold pulled the safety on theĀ gun. āYouāre not going to shoot me.āĀ
"Really dearie?ā Gold held the gun up to Whaleās chest height. āTry me again.Ā DonātĀ tell me what happened to Belle French, and I will shoot.āĀ
Whale shrunk against the opposite wall, trying to come up with a plan.Ā HeĀ couldnāt, so he told the truth. āShe was admitted to the hospital a long time ago...āĀ
"And after she was admitted,Ā goodĀ doctor? Did she receive medical attention? Or was she carefully let go under your watch?āĀ
Whale knew he was trapped. Gold knew more than he was supposed to. Regina had assured him that Gold would never come looking for the patient. WhenĀ heādĀ called Regina after the secretary paged him,Ā sheādĀ laughed at his concerns. She told him heĀ didnātĀ care about the girl anymore and thatĀ sheādĀ call Gold to make sure everything was fine.Ā Clearly, sheādĀ been wrong.Ā
āYou have the count to three to answer me, Whale.āĀ
āSheāsĀ in the basement.āĀ
Goldās voice is full of vehement rage. His voice is filled withĀ darknessĀ noĀ oneāsĀ heard since the Enchanted Forest. āSheāsĀ in the basement? You truly expect me to believe that, Whale?Ā SheāsĀ been dead forĀ thirtyĀ years!Ā DonātĀ youĀ think about lying to me right now.āĀ Ā
āIāllĀ take you to her. Just promise me that youĀ wonātĀ kill me. I was just following orders.āĀ WhaleĀ tried to placate, slowly shifting toward the door.Ā
Gold scowled but nodded. āYou are going to take me straight there, no calling for help. And ifĀ youāreĀ lying,Ā youāreĀ going to wish I shot you here.āĀ
Whale let out a shaky breath and opened the door. He silently led Gold down a few corridors until they reached a supply closet with a keycode. Gold glared at Whale as he entered the pin. āWould you like to go down first or second?ā
"You go first, I will be right behind you, dearie.āĀ
The stairs were rickety and dark. The pair descended into the dark area whereĀ only a flickering lightbulb provided any sight. A nurse was staring at them once they reached the bottom. She hissed under her breath, āWhale! What are you doing here with him?ā
Ā āHeāsĀ bringing someĀ things to light. If I were you,Ā IādĀ comply withĀ the doctorās wishes, hmm?ā He flashed the revolver in her direction.Ā
The nurse promptly sat down and acted like sheĀ hadnātĀ seen them at all.Ā WhaleĀ moved away from the desk into a narrow hall. After threeĀ roomsĀ had passed, he stopped in front of aĀ dented, padlocked door.Ā His voice was quiet and timid as he unlocked it. āSheāsĀ in there.ā
The world melted away as the door swung open. Sitting on a low metal frame was the most angelic creature in all the realms.Ā Her hair was matted, and her clothes hung too loose on her frame, but she was undeniably alive.Ā A sob almost tore through Mr. Gold, but heĀ containedĀ it. Instead, he let out a quiet murmur of her name.Ā
The effect was immediate; the tiny brunette whipped around at the sound of her name.Ā She did rememberĀ this handsome man, so clearly awed, ever visiting her. There was something familiar to him, but she could not place it.Ā She quirked her head in a way so reminiscent of her days in the Dark Castle, back whenĀ she was first starting to learn that her master was more bark than bite.Ā āDo I know you?ā
Mr. Gold could hardly contain himself. Despite her condition, his Belle was still brave. She was quieter than he remembered, but oh so strong. āYouĀ probably donāt,Ā sweetheart. But you will.āĀ
Sweetheart. The name was so impossibly tender, so pure. Belle could not remember the last time someoneĀ calledĀ herĀ so sweetly. She could, actually, butĀ thatāsĀ when everyone assumed she died. No one had calledĀ herĀ like thatĀ since her days in the Dark Castle. So intrigued was Belle withĀ this stranger that sheĀ stood up and inched closer. It was like a magnetic pull.Ā
Gold did not know what to expect as Belle limped her way towards him. It was every dream of his come true ā the good and the bad. The only difference would be what happened next. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Whale bolt toward the exit. HeĀ couldnātĀ care at all, not when Belle had that curious look in herĀ eyes.Ā
Belle only stood a foot or two away from him. Her azure eyes pierced into his very soul. HeĀ didnātĀ know what to expect, but nothing could prepare him for the words that came out of her mouth. āAnd how could I ever forget you, Rumple?āĀ
It was his turn to quirk his head. āBelle?āĀ This time, her name was a desperate plea and prayer, a man seeking refuge in being known.Ā
āYes, you stupid man, that is my name.ā She crossed her arms and let out a small laugh.Ā
To Mr. Gold, Rumplestiltskin, the sound was salvation. It was life being remade again. āYouāreĀ alive. And you remember. How?ā He was shaking like a leaf, as ifĀ heādĀ been the one locked in a dungeon for years. āWait.Ā LetāsĀ get you out of here first, then I want to hear everything.āĀ
Belle nodded. She took his arm, unable to believe the moment was real. How many times had she dreamed of her Rumple finding her and rescuing her?Ā SheādĀ never imagined it likeĀ this, butĀ it was better than she could have imagined. She clung to him like a lifeline, secretly thrilled when he leaned in rather than away.Ā
They ascended from the basement of the hospital. They walked out with confidence, even though they were both holding the other up from collapse.Ā No matter how cliche it was, the sun broke through the cloudy Maine sky as they left the hospital.Ā
Regina was pulling into the parking lot of the hospital as they left. Her face contorted first into rage then abject horror. She knewĀ sheādĀ lost;Ā sheādĀ played the longĀ game,Ā and it failed. TheĀ beast had been reunited with his beauty, and there was nowhere she would be able to hide from his wrath. She met his eyes through the windshield and knew her days were numbered.Ā
......
Rumplestiltskin could not help but smile wistfully has he watched Belle observing Storybrooke for the first time. Her eyes tried to take in every color every knew shapeĀ of the modern world. He knew that once she felt better,Ā sheādĀ ask every question she couldĀ think of. And he knewĀ heādĀ answer every single one of them.Ā
They pulled into his driveway, and he opened the door for his lady. Rumple and Belle made their way into the grand manor,Ā relaxing as the familiar scent of tea and straw permeates the air. āIt smells like home.āĀ
āAye, that it does, Belle.ā Rumple smiled that she still associated him, the Dark Castle, as home.Ā
He led her into the parlor, encouraging her to sit. āIām going to get us a cup of tea, alright sweetheart?āĀ
She sat down with the practiced grace of a princess and giggled. āIād love some tea.ā
He nodded shyly before going to the kitchen. When he returned, he carried theĀ tea service tray. He settled next to her and handed her the steaming cup. āI cannot believeĀ youāreĀ alive. After allĀ this time.āĀ
Her brow furrowed in the way he alwaysĀ foundĀ adorable. āYou thought I was dead?āĀ
āFor a long time,Ā nearlyĀ thirtyĀ years. If I had known you were alive, you never would have beenĀ wasting away below the town,ā he vowed, āRegina told me you died. I thought...āĀ
āThirtyĀ years?ā Her face paled. āHas it truly been that long? I thoughtĀ itādĀ been two years at most ā primarily back home.āĀ
Rumple let out a breathĀ heādĀ been holding. āFor that, I wonāt kill Regina right now for her hand inĀ this.ā
Belle sat her cup of tea down on a coaster before taking his hand between hers. āYouāreĀ not going to kill anyone, Rumple. Not on my behalf.Ā WeāllĀ getĀ revengeĀ by being happy. Together.āĀ
Together. The word is loaded with implications for them. For the future.Ā His voice is filled with self-loathing.Ā āYouādĀ truly still want to be together after everything? I treated you so horribly. You should hate me and finally see the monster that I am.āĀ
BelleĀ tsked, āYouāreĀ not a monster.Ā And, ifĀ youādĀ be willing to try, yes. Yes,Ā IādĀ like to be together. I love you.āĀ
Rumple could not believe his good fortune. āAnd I love you too.āĀ
Belle drew closer and shut her eyes. Rumplestiltskin was not going to messĀ this up, notĀ this time. His hands cradled her face as if it were theĀ most precious porcelain. He kissed herĀ gently;Ā afraid the moment would end. Where their first kiss wasĀ quick and disastrous, their second was languid and glorious. When they pulled away, Belle smiled and it was the most radiantĀ thing Rumple had ever seen.Ā
āNow thatās settled, IĀ think we should talk about everything thatās happened, no?ā Belle said as she tucked herself under Rumpleās arm.Ā
Rumpleās voice was low. āI suppose we should, hmm? Would you care to tell me how you came to be locked up with your memories?āĀ
Belle hummed in agreement as she started her story. āAfter I left the castle, I went in search of adventure.Ā IādĀ always wanted to explore the world, and I was taking the opportunity to do so. I had myĀ adventure, and I realizedĀ I wanted to come back home to my greatest adventure, you.Ā
I was on my way back to the castle when Regina found me. Her soldiers surrounded me and I was taken to a tower in her palace.Ā IāmĀ not magical, but IĀ could tell there were heavyĀ wardsĀ around it. I called your name, but IĀ donātĀ think you could hear me. Even then, I knew you stillĀ cared.ā
Ā Rumpleās face is dark as he listens to Belleās tale. āYouāveĀ always thought too highly of me.ā
"Nonsense!ā She snorts, āBut anyways,Ā IĀ think IĀ was there for a year andĀ a half?Ā Time kind of blended together.Ā Then the curse was cast and I found myself in a psych ward. IĀ couldnātĀ remember anything but sadness. My mom had died, and I felt so alone.Ā Ā
After a few weeks ofĀ nothing, I felt a spark.Ā Regina had come to check on me, probablyĀ to gloatĀ or something. But she made aĀ rather stupidĀ mistake. She gave meĀ this jacket.ā She gestured to the grey woolen cardigan she wore. āShe pretended to care, to be hospitable.āĀ
Rumpleās eyebrow raised as he tookĀ this all in. āThe jacket was in my shop.Ā She purchased it off of me.Ā IĀ didnātĀ know what she wantedĀ with it at the time.Ā Could that have anything to do with it?āĀ
Belle nodded vigorously. āYes! One of your hairs was on the jacket. After Regina left, I placed the jacket on. WhenĀ that hair touchedĀ mine, they entwined into a thread of gold.ā Belle reached into the pocket and showed him. āLike a flood, my memories came back. Was that around six months ago?Ā At least,Ā thatāsĀ whatĀ itĀ felt like...Ā And ever since,Ā I waited for you to come rescue me. The only bad part about remembering was that Regina declared me dead to the world. She fabricatedĀ this wholeĀ thing...āĀ
Rumple interrupted her by stealing a kiss. āYou are magnificent.āĀ
āThank you?ā
"Your love for me was so strong, that even in a world without magic, you produced it. True love.āĀ
Belleās face lit up, laughing. āAnd toĀ think youĀ didnātĀ believe me! I love you very much, you silly man. So now I want to hear your story. How did you come to find me?āĀ
Rumple swallowed. Belleās love was truly a force to be reckoned with. āWhen the curse was cast, I was condemned to life as a mundane mortal...āĀ
āWait - soĀ this is what you looked like before you were the Dark One?ā
He nodded slightly. He felt Belle looking at him like he was a text that had intrigued her.Ā He felt oddly nervous and excited.Ā
āYouāre very handsome,ā she giggled, āIāmĀ sorry for interrupting your story.Ā YouāreĀ just very distracting.āĀ
Rumple flushed as he continued his story. āThank you, sweetheart, err, the curse. I lived with no concept of time for 28 years.Ā Then the Savior came ā Charming and Snowās girl. Time started moving again.Ā
Reginaās control over the town started to slip. She tried to unsettle me. She broke into my house ā well, she hired your father to do so ā and stoleĀ from me. The cash and the jewelry were worthless to me. But she stole my most prized possession ā your chipped cup.ā
āYou kept it? My chipped cup?āĀ
āOf course. There was not a day I did not mourn the loss of your light in my life.ā He brought her hand up to his lips to kiss. āLetāsĀ say I took some actions that you would not approve of and ended up in jail.āĀ
Rumple saw the admonishing look Belle gave him but was grateful when she did not interrupt. āThe strangest thing happened, Belle. I went to sleep in the jail cell but then woke up in my own houseĀ the next day. Except itĀ wasnātĀ the next day, but it was the same day. I was living the same day over again, but with the knowledge of what happened the first time.Ā
I used that knowledge to track down information as to what happened to you. Every truth felt like a punch to the gut. ButĀ IādĀ gladly do it all over again to see you again.Ā I still cannot believeĀ youāreĀ alive.ā
Ā Belle smiled at him brightly. āDonāt youĀ see,Ā Rumple? Our love is so strong that it rewrites the narrative. Our love restored my memory and gave you the opportunity toĀ find me.āĀ
"I should learn to never doubt you ā you always seem to be correct.ā Rumple placed a kiss on the top of Belleās head.
āBetween true love and chipped cups, our love truly is the strongest forceĀ in any realm.āĀ
āWell said, Rumple.āĀ She leaned up to place another kiss on his lips.Ā āI love you so much.āĀ
āI love you more than life, Belle. More than life.

Thanks for reading you're all the best. Happy Skin Deep Day!
Love is Purple.
Happy Skin Deep Day everyone!!!
CALLING ALL DEARIES, THE FOURTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF SKIN DEEP IS COMING UP ON FEBRUARY 12 AND YOUR MISSION IS TO CELEBRATE IT WITH FLUFF. FIC, POETRY, ART, EDITS, PROMPTS, PHOTOS, FANDOM RAMBLINGS, WHATEVER SPARKS YOUR JOY. IF YOU WERE AROUND IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE FANDOM, DIG SOME OLD POSTS OUT OF YOUR ARCHIVE AND REBLOG THEM AGAIN! TAG ANYTHING NEW YOU CREATE WITH #FLUFFAPALOOZA AND IT WILL BE REBLOGGED HERE.
Two things -- do not steal and repost another person's art, and do not use AI to create any fic or art. We're better than that. Rumbelle has always been a fandom of amazing creativity that was made with LOVE and hard work, let's see that continue. And don't forget to share that love by reblogging the creative efforts of fellow Rumbellers! A like is a flicker of light in the darkness, a reblog is taking a torch down off the Dark Castle's wall and saying 'YES, HI, I SEE YOU, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE THING. I'M GLAD YOU'RE HERE.'
And since it's not Fluffapalooza unless several people reblogĀ Love Is PurpleĀ andĀ Love Is Still PurpleĀ multiple times onto your dash, there you go, handy dandy links.
Reblog if you are Team Rumbelle
If you love Belle&Rumple (Once Upon A Time) and you want reblog or like, this is the link of my reblog couples :)
thank you!

Belleās journey toward the dungeon was long. The Dark Castle, which had started seeming somewhat homely, felt crowded and disconcerting. As she walked down the stairs, everything became more claustrophobic; she could have sworn the walls were going to swallow her and confine her.Ā Stop being so silly, Belle,Ā she chided.Ā The walls have never moved in this castle. Besides, itās not all that different from walking towards my āroom.āĀ
Steeling herself and feeling braver, Belle continued down. Soon, she reached the place where the thief was being kept. She tried the door, expecting it to be locked. To her surprise, the door opened easily. She crept into the room, bracing for what sheād see.Ā Oh, my stars... It was worse than she thought.
Belle looked around the room. Her gut churned with horror at the thief ā he was hung up on manacles from the ceiling, blood dripping from a gash in his forehead. Lacerations wrapped around his body, hastily healed. Belle shuddered. She thought that washing the aprons could have prepared her for this. She had thought that the men coming home from facing the ogres could have. She was wrong.
Ā Ā Belle couldnāt believe the sight before her. Belle had always truly believed that good could be found in unexpected places. The councilmen in Avonlea had called her naive for it, and perhaps, for the first time, Belle wondered if they were right. In her short tenure as maid of the Dark Castle, Belle had begun to believe there was more to her master than met the eye. This though, this? This painted the Dark One like the legends of old. The ones that appeared when she researched the possibilities to save her kingdom. A shudder tears through Belle again.Ā Rumple, why would you do this?! It was thievery, Iāll admit, but this is inhumane. Cruel. Vindictive.
Ā Ā The insidious, pragmatic side of Belle laughed at her inability to grasp the darkness of the Dark One.Ā Of course heās going to be a monster, Belle; it taunted.Ā Heās the bloody Dark One. Remember that. The book, the conversations, theyāre a front.
Ā Ā Belle was snapped away from her internal debate when the thief grunted in pain.Ā Ethical dilemma later, save this man now.Ā She picked up the hem of her skirt and reached the man. āWhat, has he sent you to finish the job?ā
Ā Ā Belle stuttered a little as she processed his words. She was frankly a little shocked that he could speak in his condition. āNo, no, no. Not at all,ā she offered the man a cup of water. When she drew close, she noticed his lip had cracked from a lack of hydration. āDrink this.ā
Ā Belle began to try to figure out the mechanisms holding the thief up. Luckily for her, they were mundane, human trapping. She didnāt know what she was going to do if they had been magical restraints. āI couldnāt let this continue. Itās... itās inhuman.ā
Ā āI couldnāt agree more,ā the thief panted. āBut I fear now heāll turn his wrath on you.ā
Ā Ā Trust me. Iām aware.Ā āIf he does, Iāll stand up to the beast that he is because no one... no one deserves to be tortured.ā Belle gives a final tug on the rope, and the thief falls to the ground. As she began to untangle the chains, the man spoke again. āHe may beg to differ.ā
Ā āI donāt care. He doesnāt frighten me.āĀ Half lies, half-truth. āHurry up! Heāll be back soon.āĀ I truly donāt think heāll kill me, but heād probably kill you.Ā
āHe will. He will kill you. Unless...ā The thief stops, thinking. āUnless you run away with me.ā The thief reaches out his hand, waiting to rescue the damsel in distress.
Ā Belle straightened her back. Her voice was more confident than she felt ā she was grateful for her years of court training then. āI canāt run. I made a deal to serve him in exchange for him protecting my, my kingdom and my family from the ogres. If I, if I were to leave, I may survive. But my family... surely wonāt.āĀ That, and I have a strange feeling that fate wants me here. Even if I am the one who makes that fate...
Ā The thief looked at her with a curious expression but respected her sense of duty all the same. āAll I can do is wish you luck.ā
Ā āThank you, now go. Go!ā Belle shoved the thief towards the back exit. She could barely breathe from the feelings that she was trying to process. As he sprinted away, Belle sank to her knees.Ā What did I just witness in all of that?Ā Now that the imminent danger of the moment had passed, Belle thought back to the gashes and scrapes that had crisscrossed the thiefās body.Ā He really was skinning him alive, wasnāt he?
Ā Ā Belle curled into herself. It was hard for her to reconcile this image of her master with the one sheād spent the last few weeks with.Ā Itās almost like theyāre two different people. Jekyll and Hyde.Ā She considered the possibility. It didnāt seem too farfetched; not with all the magic sheād seen since coming to the Dark Castle.Ā Or heās just the Dark One and evil,Ā the logical part of her argued. But that didnāt sit well with Belle.Ā That canāt be it. No, not really.
Ā She sat there, on her knees, in a tight little ball for a while longer. Then an idea struck her. Her pragmatic side had claimed that the tender side of Rumple was a front.Ā But what if thatās actually Rumple? And the Dark One is the front?Ā The thought rattled around her brain.Ā It makes sense, really.Ā She thought back to the moments heād scared her over the past few days.Ā The aprons. Snapping at me. Coming out of the dungeon.Ā It suddenly occurred to her that they all had one thing in common.Ā His eyes were different then. Colder, almost soulless. Is that the face of the Dark One?
Ā This new revelation gave Belle hope. Perhaps her master truly wasnāt evil. Perhaps he was even good.
Ā Ā So she wasnāt directly giving away that she let the thief go, Belle returned to the Great Hall. She sat on her chaise lounge and opened her book. Just as she was before Rumple had stalked off.Ā I know that Rumple wonāt hurt me. But would the Dark One?
............................................
Ā Ā Rumplestiltskin was mad. Livid, really. Not a Belle, no. He was mad at himself. The Dark One had gotten the slip on him. That creature had spoken venom at his lovely maid. She was so brave, though; he mused.Ā Faced with the most evil and ancient power in the world and she fights back with righteous indignation.
Ā It had taken a decent amount of his control to just leave the situation. The Dark One wanted to do something to make the woman pay. It had hissed in his ear, āno one gets to talk back and get away with it. Turn her into a snail. Do it.ā Rumplestiltskin took a deep breath in. Even now, he could feel the residual anger.
Ā He leaned down and picked up a branch. The grounds around the Dark Castle had truly begun to turn towards winter. Heād always hated winter when he lived as an ordinary man. Between his ankle and the draftiness of his little cottage, winter was hard on the spinner. He twisted the branch in his hand a few times before throwing it out into the lake. The branch broke through the thin layer of ice, bobbing below the surface before coming back to the surface.Ā Not unlike my life, is it?
Ā The branch stayed on top of the lake, taunting him to do something about it.Ā Damn it all. Damn it all.Ā Rumple magicked the stick back to his hand. The branch, now wet, dripped on his mottled hands. He snapped the branch before throwing it back to the ground.Ā Useless, useless.
Ā He had just thrown the stick down when his magic flared. āYour girl is doing something she shouldnāt!āĀ Rumple growled. The voice of the Dark One truly could be incessant and rude.Ā She isnāt my girl, and sheās allowed to do whatever she pleases!
Ā Ā āEven free the wand thief from your dungeon? And escape with him?ā
Ā Rumpleās heart lurched.Ā You lie. Belle doesnāt break promises. She knows that weād revoke the protection around Avonlea if she left.Ā
The darkness crooned and pushed. āSo soft, cripple. Only concerned that the girl will leave you. Like everyone else. Everyone but us.ā
Ā Ā āSHUT UP!ā Rumple shouted. A few birds flew away at his outburst. He knocked on his head hard; the voices hadnāt been this loud since Belle had arrived to the castle. āI donāt want to hear it. You know what? Show me, show me the thief and the escape.ā
Ā Ā āAs you wish, spinner.āĀ The darkness within him casted a spell onto the lake that allowed its host to watch Belle and the thief. Rumplestiltskinās gut churned as he watched Belle make her way towards the dungeon. His heart dropped when he watched the horror meld to her face at the sight of the thief.Ā Sheās going to run away. As she should. Look at what I did to that man... heās a patchwork of skin and scab.
Ā Ā He wanted to turn away. From her horror, from the mess he made. He didnāt even remember making those gashes, but there they were.Ā Blood persists. Nightmares persist. I am its personification.Ā He wanted to turn away from his wretchedness, but he couldnāt.
Ā He watched as the thief prattled on, telling Belle of his crimes. I deserve this. He waited for Belleās agreement, her acknowledgement of his horrid nature. But instead, Belleās brave spirit shone through.Ā She truly is brave, isnāt she? āUnlike you, yes, she does have a spine.ā Rumple struck his head again.
Ā The vision continued. He watched as the thief told his maid to run away, that he would maim her too. Then he heard what she responded with. Belle was planning on staying.Ā Of course. Sheās staying. He was ready to cry, for the Dark One to make its vengeance on Avonlea known.Ā Of course she'd run off with the handsome thief...Then the thought hit him.Ā Sheās staying?!
Ā He could feel the darknessās anger at her stubbornness to keep the deal. But it paled in comparison to the joy he felt that she was staying.Ā Perhaps not for me, but she says sheāll remain. Nonetheless, I get to keep her light in my life.
Ā Ā The thief ran off. The Dark One was mad, but Rumplestiltskin could not bring himself to care. Belle had stayed. She was still there, kneeling on the ground of the blood speckled dungeon. The room that was nearly identical to her own.Ā That will have to change. I cannot have her sleep in a room thatād give her memories of the tortured man. Of the blood I spilled.
Ā āYou really could though. Itād be a good reminder of who we are.āĀ The darkness crowed. āSpeaking of, we should go pay the girl a visit. Show her the consequences of letting our prisoner go.ā
Ā Rumple sighed
