I know there's been a lot of spotlight on the dramatic increase in grocery costs, and, of course, gas prices are a constant feature of financial conversation for this country; but I really feel like we do a disservice by not constantly illuminating how this is actually happening with everything in order to generate heavier pushback against this insanity.
I bought my home in 2021. within three months, my insurance company mailed me a note to say I was getting dropped due to some of the exterior materials. you'd think that'd be something to check prior to agreeing to insure a place, lol. scrambled to find coverage - $1,600 annual premium. didn't know much but felt like that was on the upper end of doable. then got the renewal notice that it was going to jump for the following year to $2,200. immediately started shopping around near the end of that insurance year for new coverage.
fast forward to 2023: managed, somehow, to find a place that negotiated with me to around $700 for the annual premium - much more reasonable; I mean FFS, I've never even had to make a claim!
2024: the insurance company gets bought out/merges with another smaller, local company. so, for 2025, the annual premium is gonna go up by $250, which in the grand scheme of things was tolerable - still under $1,000 but a shocking increase over one year.
and again. ESPECIALLY. when EVERYTHING else is ALSO increasing - DRASTICALLY - in cost.
fast forward again. 2026. getting ready to roll into the next premium year, and it's now going to be: $1,500 AND they're dropping coverage portions because new company with new policies.
five years, four insurance companies. a doubling of the cost over the last two years alone. zero claims. zero barriers to "insurability."
