The Entombment
Artist: Simon Vouet (French, 1590-1649)
Date: ca. 1636-1638
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: © MuMa Le Havre / Museum of Modern Art André Malraux, Le Havre, France
Description
The Entombment of Christ is a poignant, emotionally restrained Baroque masterpiece. Commissioned for the Séguier Chapel in France, it combines Italian Caravaggesque drama with the measured elegance that defined Vouet's French court style, characterized by monumental simplicity and rich, luminous color.
Jesus Is Buried
After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb bin which no one had yet laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

The Women at the Tomb of Christ
Artist: Ferdinand Bol (Dutch, 1616-1680)
Date: 1644
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Staten Museum for Kunst / The National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark
Description
Ferdinand Bol's monumental painting is based on the account in the Gospel of Luke (24:1-10) of what happened when the women who had followed Jesus from Galilee came to the tomb on Sunday morning. The tomb was closed with a large stone and was also guarded by soldiers to prevent anyone from removing the body and then imagining that Jesus had risen from the dead, as the prophecy had predicted. Ferdinand Bol depicts the shock that it was for Mary Magdalene, Johanna, Mary the mother of James and one of the other women from Galilee to be greeted with an open tomb and two men in shining garments. The spatial construction of the painting opens up a view of a distant landscape through the opening of the tomb.
