I never really thought I’d have a problem with aging. But here I am trying to fight time. It feels like grains of sand slipping through my fingers. There is just not enough time.

It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.
This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.
“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.
“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.
“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.
Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.
Just. READ. THE. GOD. DAMN. SIGN.

Would you spend some time here?
It’s crazy and fucked up that being yourself is actually the solution.
It’s like. When I was told to “just be yourself” as a kid I thought it was a passive thing. Like oh easy I just have to sit here and be myself. but the reason so many people think that “being yourself” is bullshit advice is because you actually have to make active choices to do this and it WILL make your life way more fun. You have to wear t-shirts of bands that were popular ten years ago because you like them. You have to do your hair in a way that you find cute or comfortable even if it’s “so nineties”. If your friend says a food you enjoy is gross to them, you can’t be afraid to admit you casually disagree. You have to do hobbies that you’re interested in even if you’re bad at them and you cant feel like you have to get good at something before you tell people it’s an activity you do. You have to read manga and comic books in public and get piercings your relatives think are unattractive. You don’t have to tell people you dislike that you dislike them, but you don’t have to give them your time and attention either. You have to rewatch that kids show you’re nostalgic for even if you’re in your 30s. You have to change your name if you hate it, even if only a few close friends can know. You have to get fun girly drinks at the bar. You have to order hot chocolate when you don’t like coffee and black coffee when you don’t like sweet things. I am still bad at practicing this but it is the only way to make it all tolerable.
First you have to realize that "yourself" is a construct built by the decisions you make. Then it becomes clear that being yourself is a deliberate and intentional practice, not a passive state of existence.

Hunt's Mesa, Monument Valley by Bousure
When I was diagnosed at age sixteen, after having one period in the eighth grade and then never again till a medically induced one my junior year of high school - my uterine lining measured in centimeters because it was so thick, my mother turned to me in the car. She was upset. Literal tears in her eyes. And she told me her friend had PCOS, but was still able to have kids. That this was still a possibility for me if I did injections and fertility treatments, etc. My mom had never asked me if I wanted kids, she just assumed.
My first conversation about PCOS with my new endocrine/OBGYN was about weight management and how that could improve my fertility when I eventually wanted kids. It wasn't asked what my goals were for my health or if I wanted kids, just assumed.
I was a hormonal, depressed mess. I hated my body. My body dysmorphia was so bad that I cloistered myself away from so much. I wore hoodies and jeans in the 90°F, 80% humidity summers. This was considered fine. I was given metformin and birth control pills and told this was all that could be done. That PCOS wouldn't affect my life until I wanted to be pregnant. I wasn't asked if I wanted to be pregnant, just assumed.
I don't know how many PCOS groups I joined on my early 20s hoping to find community and commonality for body dysmorphia and symptom management, only to be bombarded with fertility treatments and tips and 'inspirational conception' anecdotes. They never asked if I was attempting to conceive, just assumed.
It's a problem. It's been a problem. And thank god I learned to speak up and find medical professionals that would help me with *MY* goals. I shouldn't have had to, someone should have recognized the needs of that sixteen y.o. and protected her, but I can only hope the conversation changes as awareness increases.
I have it, and I've always wanted kids. I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't heartbreaking when my doctor told me (very kindly, very gently–he was one of the good ones and I'm very sad he retired) that my chances of having kids without help were very, very rough.
I'm still pissed as can be that fertility and weight are the only things that are focused on when we talk about PCOS/PMOS. I remember being 16 and newly diagnosed and looking online for some support, any support, and only finding groups of women hoping desperately to conceive. And look, I'm glad those support groups exist for those women! But there are so, so many more ways that PCOS impacts my life on a daily basis and I had NOWHERE to talk about it .
Now, things have improved a lot in that respect since then, but as far as research is concerned, it took almost 100 years to get a more accurate name for this disease. Everyone just wants to shove you on the pill/metformin/a combination of the two. Or now, of course, the "holy grail" of glp-1s. And hey, if those treatments work for you, great! But my goodness, for a disease that affects AT LEAST 1 in 10 American women, STOP TELLING ME THAT I CAN ALWAYS TAKE FERTILITY DRUGS LATER and take some of the billions that goes into developing the next erectile dysfunction drug and give me SOMETHING more substantial than "have you tried cutting out carbs?"
It’s so so hard to not fall into hopelessness and endless despair.
