One of my favorite things about Disco Elysium is how it straight up lies to you about what kind of game it's going to be solely through the language of game design affordances.

E.g. How your inventory has a dedicated slot for bullets as if ammunition is a resource that you're constantly going to be managing, when actually there are only two (2) bullets you can obtain in the entire game, and they only get used in one specific sequence.

Or how the tutorial voice tells you the whole "Lieutenant Kitsuragi is now in your party" thing and then that's literally the entire extent of the party system in the game.

And of course both of those are examples of things that could be seen as holdovers from an earlier point in development where Disco was going to be a very different kind of game, but it's clear that they were very deliberately left in to fuck with the player about their expectations of traditional CRPG game design conventions.

#or how about the fact also that dora straight up calls you out at the end #for the trope of trying all the dialogue options like a video game protagonist #instead of seeing life NOT as a series of dialogue trees 🥲#dream dora wisely telling the player that it’s prudent to be intentional about choices #in a game that wants you ultimately to be kind to people (and to harry) and to not shoot children #and yet some folks didnt seem to pick up on some of those hmm!#disco elysium
