boys donāt do cry
Supernatural had the opportunity to do something great. To send a message of love and validation to a whole community. Not only to the part of the community that liked their show, but to all of us. But instead they decided to pander to the people, who never had to fight for their representation.
I support #TheySilencedYou, #TheySilencedThem and #TheyWillNeverSilenceUs and I'm in awe of all of you. Of your eloquence, passion, coordination and decisiveness. And I feel like your message goes beyond this particular TV show and the CW.
It's about protesting a pattern of disrespect towards otherness in Mainstream Media. It's about demanding meaningful, unmistakably queer representation, that enables discourse and furthers understanding in a heterogenic Audience. It's about asking Networks to not only hire diverse staff but to also give them the freedom to tell their stories the way they want to. It's about telling creators to own up to the inherent messages they leave us with in the end.
And that's inspiring and should be celebrated.
Stories matter.

Iām done keeping my composure.
Sorry, this will be a LOADED post! (And Iāll be repeating the points others have made)
for real, to everyone being nasty and telling heartbroken fans thatĀ āDean was always supposed to die get a grip youāre just butthurt etcetera etceteraāā F you royally.
How dare you police the brutal feelings thatās been embroiling us since the Finale That Must Not Be Named aired.Ā
The show you think you all watched, the show you all believe was the same SPN from Season 1-4, changed at some point. Kripke wrote his original vision, put it to screen, saw it through in S5 as he intended, and closed the door on that era.
In 2008, Supernatural was adopted and inherited. As you know, there was a supreme paradigm shift post-Kripke era. The show FLOURISHED (we wonāt talk about Gamble thanks).Ā It evolved,Ā transformed, grew beyond trauma-induced self-worthlessness and toxic masculinity and endless death and hegemonic social ideals and conservatism and repressive anti-revolutionary ideas. Castiel, the iconic favourite and beloved staple of the series portrayed by Misha Collins, was introduced in Season 4 as the core lead character, and he ushered in a brand new era of Christian mythos that SPN took advantage of. Longevity SKYROCKETED. Audiences were INTERESTED. SPN amassed an incredibly groundbreaking fanbase infused by non-nuclear principles. A massive subversive wave began, fighting the Status Quo of the times since 2008. Itās precisely why such an abysmal ending to a show of extensive Freud-Jungian metanarratively meta META complex stature and social POWER will render us totally and unbearably broken for years to come.
Point is, DEAN WINCHESTER NO LONGER WANTED TO DIE. HE WANTED TO LIVE. HE WANTED TO SIT ON THE BEACH, PLUNGE HIS TOES IN THE SAND, AND SIP UMBRELLA DRINKS WITH HIS BROTHER AND HIS BEST FRIEND.Ā He said this in Season 13. And then, a season later, he told the ghost of his long-deceased father ā the source of his deep-running trauma and the figure of self-reductive authoritarianism permeating his arc since Season 1 ā after being questioned why he didnāt pursue the Nuclear Fam, that he already has his own: his brother Sam, his adopted child Jack, and Cas.
Deanās best friend Cas. Oh god, Cas, who made his inevitably permanent mark on Deanās soul beyond allyship. Castiel, renamed to Cas, Godās -iel removed by Dean. Dean, the human spark that lit the fire of pre-existing autonomy in the inherently rebellious angel who was, this entire time, the catalyst for free will in God The Writerās puppet show. Their friendship set on goddamn fire.Ā I can also write paragraph upon paragraph about my love for Cas while devastated tears stream down my face, but I digressā
Casā romantic love for Dean pushed our main Heart of SPN to love himself. Love is free will. Free will is also love. Of note, Casā love confession in 15x18 was supposed to offset something so vastly important and fundamentalā¦to maybe (read: most likely) pull the trigger on SELF-TRUTHS in conjunction with free will. And The Great Anticipated Follow-Up to the episode penned by the passionate Berens should have included (read: seemed like it was going to be) Dean, closeted trauma survivor in love with his best friend, being given the opportunity to do it right: to SPEAK HIS TRUTH, and then that very singular opportunity was STOLEN so grossly. After poring over it for days, I refuse to believe we made their years-long story up out of thin air, spun it out of fantastical-delusional dream cotton candy, because we DIDNāT. IT WAS REAL.
As I said in another post: āIāve just been feeling physically ill for the past >40 something hours with the terrible knowledge that 19/20 undid years of vital progression towards healthy interdependence, autonomy, and a positive endgame, where Sam, Dean and Cas close the ring of found family in final empowering self-fulfillmentā¦where Dean, no longer repressed and set free, is able to use his words and speak his truth as a queercoded trauma survivor, henceforth confirming and self-affirming his own bisexuality since S1 by reciprocating ā by telling Cas that he always loved him, too, loved him endlessly, which would have altogether divested Supernatural of its cult status and catapulted it into global worldwide significance as the longest running sci-fi genre show in American broadcasting history that actually dared to defy and, by proxy, empower LGBTQ2IA+ everywhere who found profound personal meaning in Destiel through VALIDATION,ā ā found themselves mirrored in Dean and Casā respective character journeys individually and as each otherās queer love interests.
THIS IS WHY DEAN WASNāT MEANT TO DIE.
THEY WERE SO ESSENTIAL, NOT JUST TO THE OVERARCHING STORY AND HEALTHY INTERPERSONAL THEMATICS OF MODERN SPN, BUT ALSO TO THE SOULS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD WHO FOLLOWED THEIR JOURNEYS, HOPED FOR THEM, ASPIRED TO BE LIKE THEM, TREASURED THEM, WEEPED FOR THEM, AND FOUGHT FOR THEM, LIKE YOU AND ME.
Heck, how could anyone think Sam Winchester had a well-deserved characteristic ending? He didnāt. Deanās brother was shafted so badly. He stopped hunting when seasons ago, he had canonically accepted that he no longer wanted an apple pie life. He simplyā¦turned the lights off in a resoundingly empty bunker and left ā abandoning his dead brotherās room ā never to return (he did return later to get the Impala, family photos etc, I mean this symbolically)ā¦as if ā dare I say it ā Supernatural itself eerily told us, in the negative-spaced pitch blackness, that the organic show and the wonderfully complex, matured characters weāve grown to love werenāt going to survive or be revisitedā¦that it was all going to perish, and that they no longer gave a single shit about their own show, which, to me, is the worst cardinal sin, because how dare they throw Team Free Will, an immovable and indomitable and passionate found family they built from the ground up, a found family CHOCK FULL TO THE BRIM OF LOVE AND LIFE RAGING AGAINST THE AUTHORITARIAN MACHINE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE FREE WILL, under the bus no matter who is to blame. Growth was stomped on.
Then Sam married a faceless wife who wasnāt his textually established (and deaf) love interest Eileen, named his son Dean Jr., and grew old miserably, still mourning the passing of his older brother, shaken and sombre. Back to square one. IT WAS ALL ANTITHETICAL, even OUTSIDE a shipping context, and I ripped my hair out at this point in sheer disbelief.
This 15x20 ending would have fit somewhere between S4-7. Now? IT DOESNāT FIT. ITāS A JAGGED PUZZLE PIECE THAT DOESNāT BELONG ANYWHERE. ITāS THE FOREBODING UNKNOWN STRANGER IN ITS OWN LAND, BOTH LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY. This kind of ending was basically an illogical, unsound cluster of metastasized cells that, to me, ruined the viability of previous seasons to sustain bold praise and respect and dignity and rewatches and classic nostalgia in such insidious ways.
Dean Humanity Winchester and Cas, after everything theyāve been through, were silenced and lost in death, ripped apart from each other, unable to love each other the way they deserved, because of disappointing, vile incompetency and homophobia. The greatest love story ever told, again obliterated in less than 60 hollow minutes.
You know what this tells your audience, CW SPN? Death without self-growth is the way to go, and no one is allowed to forge their own path to freedom.
HOW INSULTINGLY HARMFUL IS THAT?
I donāt think Iāll ever stop grieving.
We all deserve answers.
okay iām going to rant about Supernatural here for a minute, as a headās up, but iām just seeing so many people not understand what the show is actually doing - which is fair, i donāt expect anyone to have 15 seasons of genre tv show memorized - and assuming the worst when iām pretty sureĀ that itās a fucking beautiful, galaxy brain story playing out.
like, just. the final season 15 big bad is literally God - but heās not reallyĀ God, the Christian God, he is the incarnation of the writers themselves. the character of God was originally a tongue-in-cheek avatar of the actual writers as the author of the Supernatural books (yes, inside Supernatural there are Supernatural books, and Supernatural conventions, and a Supernatural musical), Carver Edlund - as in Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund, two of the primary writers at the time. he was, at the time, aĀ āprophetā who could foresee the future and write what was supposed to happen.
the character of God is the author of this story, and this entire season has been about how the protagonists have to defeat God - they have to literally defeat the story itselfĀ in order to be victorious. in a fucking unprecedented level of meta, the villain of the final season is literallyĀ the story and the writers themselves.
and then you have Castiel, a character who was supposed to be in a handful of episodes 11 years ago and then permanently killed off. a character who was meant to be permanently killed off againĀ three years after that, who was kept and brought back again and again because the fans demanded it, because Cas and Misha Collins became so intrinsic to the story.Ā
at the end of his first season, theĀ āprophetā (God) told Castiel that he wasnāt supposed to be in this story, and Castiel replied, Yeah, well, weāre making it up as we go.
and then, in the episode before the one with this confession, God confronted Castiel and called him the one thingĀ that he couldnāt ever control.Ā God, CasāsĀ āfatherā (the writers who created him) shouted at Cas for never doing as he was told, for always being the spanner in the works.
and then, Castiel culminates years of character development with a beautiful speech about how happiness is in the being, not the having, and comes out as explicitly queer. he confesses that everything heās ever done has been for love.
and what is Supernatural about? Supernatural is about love saving the world. that was literally the final message of the season 5 finale, which was originally intended to be the series finale. the first time Supernatural ended,Ā ālove will save the worldā was its final message.
Castiel is the queer love that the writers never intended to exist but that they couldnāt control and couldnāt stop, that they tried to kill and couldnāt.Ā
Castiel didnāt die, Castiel is the queer love that couldnāt die.Ā
and, i think many people donāt realize, the deal that Cas made with the Empty was something put into action - two seasons ago, i think? it was quite a while ago that he made this deal. this has been planned for a long time, it wasnāt a last minute fan service thing. there are people putting meticulous care into this story and theyāre not playing around with it, they are laying out their final hand with deliberate intention. the writer who crafted Castielās confession (a gay man, fyi) wrote that speech as the first thingĀ he wrote for the season. there is careĀ here.
people unfamiliar with the show may also not realize that when Castiel first came on the show, he saved Dean from hell - because Dean had alsoĀ made a deal, a deal trading his life for the one he loved most, his brother. Castiel made a deal trading his life for the one he loved most, his son.Ā
that is a parallel, a rhyme to this story, that can onlyĀ be completed with Dean saving Cas from hell. that is a beautiful, poetic, fucking incredibleĀ way to bring this to a close. i have been very wary about actually trusting this show after getting burned over and over, but even i canāt deny the care being written into this and the self-aware beauty of the story that is unfolding.Ā
Castiel has died a dozen times before, at least, as has Dean - in fact, two seasons ago Cas escaped the Empty, the āhellā he was just taken to. leaving your story there would be hella weak sauce, and make no narrative sense.
but Dean, who has been galvanized by rage for so long - Dean, who has been lost and furious knowing that heās a puppet whose strings have been pulled for a capricious Godās amusement and who now knows that maybe the only real thing in the universe is that an angel is in love with himĀ - laying down his anger and choosing to fight for love, saving Castiel the same way that Castiel first saved him? our protagonists, collectively known as Team Free Will, defeating the Author and choosing their own destiny, choosing love and saving the world?Ā
now thatāsĀ a fucking story.
iām still nervous, of course i am. but all of the pieces have been set in place, and with two episodes left, for the first time iām actually excited to see how this story ends.
Oh please donāt let me regret reblogging this

Can I just say
THAT THESE

LET MEN BE āFEMININEā
LET MEN BE BEAUTIFUL
LET MEN BE MEN
when drawing people kissing, itās good to make their heads more tilted. if theyre too straight up it looks less natural (im bad at explaining but i hope this is useful advice)
