Okay, okay, Knives Out trilogy has some mind blowing mystery of course. But the message? The message each movie gives makes it much more than just a detective movie that just gives you suspense and thrill and the ache to solve the mystery with Benoit.
At the core of all the three movies, choosing to be kind has been the fundamental personality of the people Benoit stuck to just to solve the case while also at the end, reassures and appreciates them for their beliefs and values

I went to go see 28 years later expecting like a grimdark apocalypse zombie movie with plenty of gore and high octane running from zombies shit and a lot of bullets, and then got slammed with the most beautiful scene about the end of life and acceptance of death I've ever seen.
and then there was Jimmy.
I absolutely love that we got so much of the skull tower in the marketing for 28 Years Later--especially knowing that the sequel is the Bone Temple--and everyone expected it was going to be some kind of murderous death cult, but it was just one doctor caring for the dead and making a loving final resting place to honor what the people and the country had gone through. It was a reminder that the infected are still people, and in their death they are no different than anyone else.
And then that wild tone change at the very end introduced us to the actual murderous death cult.

Spike goes to the mainland twice, but he only βbecomes a manβ once. With his father he sees killing and death as heavily bravado based, the enemy so dehumanized itβs an adrenaline inducing boyβs day. He misses most of his arrow shots and hides in an attic.
With his mother he learns there is love and memory in death, accepts that they all must die, and sees that sometimes you must kill to survive. They sleep in an open air church and his arrows strike hard and true.
With his father he leaves and returns as the child in need of protection and with his mother he returns protecting a baby and taking on the role of adult.
All of this to say is the movie shows us the stark difference between the toxic masculinity of his culture telling him that manhood is killing for fun, and the masculinity he learns from the doctor about honoring death and accepting that the only thing we have power over is love and memory.
With three movies to compare between, I really appreciate how each Knives Out movie explores justice from a different thematic angle, not based on the murder that was committed but based on the cruelty that led to that murder.
In Knives Out, a compassionate, ethical young woman treats everyone around her with generosity, and the people around her repeatedly try to take advantage of her kindness to force her into losing the fortune that was gifted to her by a dear friend. There, justice means that she keeps the fortune and decides that actually, she doesn't have to be kind and giving to people who've proven themselves assholes.
In Glass Onion, a woman loses her sister to a gang of wealthy, successful people who've sacrificed their principles for the sake of ambition and ego. There, justice means that everyone involved will be made notorious: whatever their other accomplishments, they will forever be known for being complicit in the burning of the most famous painting in history.
In Wake Up Dead Man, the church takes advantage of a young girl's loyalty and faith to place her under a lifelong burden and fill her with guilt, shame, and hatred. Justice means helping her understand what was done to her and the women around her, and giving her compassion so she can find peace.
This is cool because it means the movies contradict each other! The compassionate justice of Wake Up Dead Man would be totally misplaced in Knives Out, and so would the toppling-monuments justice of Glass Onion. And because each movie has something different to say, they all stand on their own and feel fresh.
This is also why Benoit Blanc is the uniting figure but never the protagonist of these movies. He's an agent of legal justice in that he's the detective and it's his job to figure out whodunnit, but the protagonist -- Marta, Helen, and now Jud -- is always the character who delivers thematic justice.
Stresses me out so bad when authors who obviously don't drink write characters drinking. Omfg girl he is like 27 shots deep.

That's such a sick baby picture to have. The rest of us are all like "oh this is me tripping in the backyard when I was 2" and that baby's gonna have "yeah that's me in my mom's arms as she wins a mortal Kombat tournament". Iconic.
Girl help they're selectively breeding the world's most powerful Mortal Kombat player.
the thing about speaking truthfully from your heart and also being deadpan in your tone is that people will think that you are constantly lying or are being sarcastic. i have never lied about anything ever. except for the times i did lie. but most of those times it was either for the bit or because i thought it would be funny.
