the warm expanse of the common room had been cleared out for the night. fire crackled and sputtered in your ears and the scarlet heat that radiated from the flames chased off the remaining chill from your rattling hands.
a hoarse chuckle warmed the rest of your body as you recognized the presence of your closest friend and dearest marauder, sirius.
âhow long have you been there?â you anxiously pressed, a swarming sensation curling up at the nape of your neck at the consideration that he mightâve been watching you.
âa good 5 minutes,â sirius replied absentmindedly, looking a bit too cheery for his own damn good and not-so put together.
âwhatâs gotten into you?â you chortled inwardly, carefully joining together the pages of your books as you set it aside your splayed out figure. settling your legs together instead of across the couch, you patted the cushioned seat besides you.
it took a moment for sirius to register your question, but wrapping an arm around your shoulder, he swayed the pair of you side-to-side.
kissing the temple of your head, he murmured into the crevice of your neck, âoh, nothing, darling.â
shoving your hands abruptly into his coat pockets, you tugged out a packet of a mysterious, yet altogether familiar substance.
wrenching it from your smaller, weaker grip, he shushed you and stilled further questioning.
âshh, shh, pay no mind.â
a look of playful disappointment flashed your face, your lips a straight line as you narrowed your eyes accusingly at sirius.
âsirius black, youâre high already?â you inquired in exaggerated bewilderment.
âalready? itâs the middle of the bloody night, what are you doing up?â sirius returned, finding it harder to focus on places he should have been focusing on.
âeyes up here!â you snapped, jostling siriusâ shoulder, finding it amusing how he always finds ways to make this about you.
âi mean in the middle of the week. donât you reserve this stuff for the weekends and such?â you spoke, trying not too sound too curious.
âi donât need to reserve anything, weâre the ones that grow it anyways,â sirius uttered under his breath, your eyes drilling holes into the side of his head.
âplenty of stock,â sirius met your gaze, nose scuffing yours, taking in every tint and shade apparent on your skin.
âsirius,â you huffed out distractedly, the irises of your eyes unknowingly expanding.
ây/n?â sirius echoed.
settling your bottom closer to siriusâ thighs, you drape a leg across his lap, enticing him to pay attention.
âno, youâre not having any, y/n.â sirius finished for you, acting as if the mere mention offended him.
âbut you said you had enough,â you pleaded softly, hoping not to push too hard. you curled your knees against your chest, removing them from his lap to reprimand him. siriusâ hands twitching and itching to grab you and settle you in your previous position. instead, his hands ghost over your form, enticing you to move towards him.
âthatâs not the problem, youâre too young,â he quipped sarcastically, basking in his abundant hypocrisy.
âweâre the same age, black!â after his initial discouragement, your eyes skittered to the fireâs unending and constant sizzle. you opened your mouth to beg once more before being interrupted.
âitâs final, alright?â he spoke affectionately, patting your head a bit and smoothing the ruffled tufts of hair that poked out.
digging your jaw deeper into his robes, you inhaled siriusâ fragrance of expensive perfume and clouded smoke.
âare you sniffing me?â sirius hoisted up the back of his head from your shoulder to peer at you properly.
sirius took a dramatic inhale of your sweater cuff, sighing and letting his head plop back down in comedic fashion as he exhaled.
âyouâre so unnecessary!â you retorted playfully, tugging a strand of his hair.
âsays the one breathing me in!â sirius countered.
âi was checking if i could, you know, smell it on you!â
âsmell what on me? come on, spit it out.â sirius responded expectedly.
âthatâs what i thought.â sirius riposted, swinging his legs across your lap and kicking them up a bit only for them to come hurtling back down, much like a child would.
âtoasty,â he commented, searching your face for the expression of distaste he was hoping for. sirius black lived and breathed to be annoying.
âgod, youâre precious.â
âprecious? donât you mean perfect?â he innocently corrected, if siriusâ nose was angled up any higher, heâd be looking upwards at the ceiling perpetually.
âwell youâre not perfect. even if you were iâd never admit it. perfect people donât even exist, black. and even so, if anyone gets to be perfect, itâd be me.â you stifled laughter, it embarrassed you slightly how much your own joke could amuse you.
âouch!â sirius clenched a hand around his chest, he held his spare out for yours, placing it just above his palpating heart.
âfeel that? youâve just gone and broken it.â he pouted for effect.
tugging him closer by whatever scrap of fabric you could clench under your hand, your lips meld momentarily before you just as abruptly pull away.
silence. awkward silence.
âwell youâve just gone and ruined it havenât you?â
an inhale, then a sigh. from sirius.
âguess youâve just got to do it again because, dearest y/n, i couldnât feel a thing.â
