Romano-British bronze brooches Circa 1st-4th Century A.D.
The forest falls eerily silent. The air smells of humus, and dead grass, and ozone. You see a hole in the air that is shaped like an animal. The edge of the hole crackles like television static.

Beautifully-observed & realistic figure of a sleeping Antelope incised on rock up to 10,000 years ago at Tin Taghirt, Tassili n'Ajjer in Algeria, one of the largest & most important groupings of prehistoric cave art in the world.

today’s obsession is ancient tattoos, in particular the s-curved floral-antlered deer of the Siberian Ice Maiden and Scythian Chieftain.
it’s such a heavily used trope in modern media (off the top of my head I can think of Pokemon, Annihilation, Bambi, Snow White and the Huntsman, etc) and why wouldn’t it be! antlers look like branches, branches look like antlers, it’s only natural to pair them
but it makes me strangely emotional that our brains have always worked this way, and been drawn to the same imagery over and over again.
I’m also going to resist the urge to make paired enamel pins of these ancient deer, even though I deeply desire little wearable tributes of the past
I’m pretty sure the reason it comes up so much throughout time is because it’s a real thing.
Deer antlers start off covered in velvet, which is a layer of skin with blood vessels which help is grow. But once the antlers reach full size, the velvet has to come off, and since they don’t have hands, the best way is to rub the antlers on trees. (Which I’m not including pictures of itself because there’s a lot of blood.) Which sometimes ends up with leaves and branches caught in them.
Also when you walk around with bigass things attached to your head, you get them caught in stuff sometimes.
When the rut comes around, testosterone levels rise and many of these animals take out their frustrations on human-made objects.
