Do you have a ballpark estimate of when the 6th volume of Almost Real (+ the omnibus of the previous 5) will come out? Iām a big fan of both you and Jay.
I wish I did! I know the kickstarter should launch by the end of this month, no doubt there will be more info about the expected release dates by then.

A trio of characters from my weird dragon setting. If I ever make an rpg out of it, these guys would be the core party, united by the power of Group Project. I canāt quite call them original characters, since each is based on characters my friends made for a pilot session I ran in the setting. Ifemi is the unofficial leader, since the crux of the adventure (a survey of dragon meta-lairs) was her thesis proposal. Sheās highly motivated and studious, if a bit over-invested in her favorite anime series. Leet was hand-picked by Ifemi for their experience with breaking into the cyberspace of runescribing monitors (magic computers), which has some practical application to entering and navigating dragon lairs. Matthias wants to be a Lone Warrior, but got tacked into the group by his grandfather, who is an actual dragon/notorious public benefactor that thought this would be a terrific character building experience for the lad.
Iām affectionately calling them the Cringe Crew
Some more character info down here:
Matthias is the literal golden child of the Delmar family, a dynasty of wealthy merchants in the seaside city of Kadromy. As part of a centuries-old ritual tying the wealth of the Delmar bloodline to the the intellectual wealth of Kadromyās famous magic university, Matthias father was sired by the cityās resident dragon and university benefactor Saargasto the Nacreous. As a quarter gold-dragon, Matthias has a natural affinity to magic; the real challenge is learning to harness and control it, as his casting tends to be as explosive as his temper. He hates the rigid expectations of both school and his family, and in general just wants to cut his own path and be the cool mysterious guy in the corner of the tavern. Currently being forced to participate in a group project that he didnāt even come up with, which grates on him even more.
xXx_L33T_HAXXOR_xXx is the forum handle of an otherwise nameless young dwarf attending Kadromy University. They go by a number of nicknames, including Leet, Haxx, Nobody, and Jerma. The World Wide Weave is a dangerous place, as Leet learned the hard way in childhood after losing their true name and identity to fey mischief and a corrupted link. Their whole past had to be wiped to save them from being cursed for life, and rather than choose a new, normal name, Leet opted to just embrace anonymity. Dwarves in this setting are master builders of runescribing monitors (basically magic computers), so Leet has more experience with these powerful engines of conjuring and communication than most. Despite being quiet and secretive, Leet enjoys some infamy for their side hustle in pirated spell scrolls and fairy goods. Stuck in a group project with two insane people.
Ifemi Sowande is a bright young wizard-in-training at KMU (Kadromy Magical University), with a focus on sub-planar ecology, though sheās also adept in the fields of conjuration and evocation. She credits her tenacious approach to life to her fictional role model, Ajitama the ninja. Ifemiās spellcasting technique is unorthodox, citing āstyles of ninjutsuā and āthe chi point systemā as her primary methodology. Many find her personality odd and overbearing, but she has a heart of gold and will go out of her way to help classmates. Her extracurricular activities include parkour, kendo, jÅ«jutsu, and being an active member of the school otaku club. Unfortunately, college is expensive even in in this fantastical realm, and Ifemi has contracted her fair share of curses trying to rip spell scrolls and unofficial manga translations off the www (world wide weave). She actually meets and befriends Leet after they start corresponding on a cyber-curse help forum and figure out they share a class.

Very un-serious comic I did a few weeks ago feat. Ahab the wretched fish-creature meeting a klabautermann, or shipās kobold. Folklore on them varies, but at least one source claims that offering any items of clothing to a naked one is very offensive! Ahab can expect a lot of loose ropes, vandalized belongings, and inexplicable falling objects in the next few weeks..
The spec bio anthology series is BACK with its sixth volume all about POP CULTURE, and a REMASTERED HARDBACK COLLECTION of Volumes 1ā5!
ALMOST REAL: A Speculative Biology Zine returns with the ALL-NEW VOLUME 6 and a remastered collection of VOLUMES 1-5!
Back in the mid 2010s, illustrator and Runaway to the Stars creator Jay Eaton incepted the idea of hosting a speculative biology anthology: a small magazine collecting uniquely-made entries from pool of fellow artists and authors who loved all the possibility and creativity that the world of spec bio had to offer. Together with Hye Mardikian, their idea and collaboration brought forth ALMOST REAL: A SPECULATIVE BIOLOGY ZINE's first volume all the way back in 2017.Ā
In 2018, we took to the skies with our second volume FLIGHT. Volume 3 took you under the waves with AQUATICS, Volume 4 introduced all sorts of inventions from BIOTECHNOLOGY, and legends came to life in from Volume 5's MYTHOLOGY.
Now, in 2026, we RETURN: featuring our sixth volume with 12 new entries all about POP CULTURE and a remastered omnibus of BOOK 1 that collects all 5 of our previous, some out-of-print issues, and we need YOUR HELP to print these books and pay our artists!
You can ignore this if you wantāare you planning on exploring or developing your other alien sophonts, like the monoculi and swimslugs, in the future, or are you fully committed to birgs?
Worldbuilding for me is sort of a feedback loop: the more lore I have already established, the more conceptual launch points I have to build new ideas around. It took me years to reach that point with birgs, and swimslugs and monoculi just havenāt cleared that barrier yet. That said, I will no doubt revisit them when inspiration strikes; thereās plenty of ideas in the vault that I just havenāt gotten around to illustrating.
But yeah, I want hyperborea to at least feel as big and complex as earth, and I still sometimes think Iāve bit off more than I can chew by limiting the focus to two continents instead of one. I just donāt think I have the bandwidth to give that kind of scope to three entire species.

Rather odd question, but are there any sort of color or pattern "rules" with birgs? I know that sopme populations have their own internal rules (Twowi are bluish with a white blaze, some were dark with white spots, some had specific beard and mustache patterns) but what are some sort of wide reaching rules? What's the color palette range, are their any distinct or often shared markings?
Birgs vary quite a lot by ethnicity, but there are some commonalities across broad regions. For example, in populations endemic to the southern hemisphere (bottom 3 rows), you will find that dark patches around the chelicerae, eyes, and spiracles are common; virtually the opposite of the white facial markings found in most north hemisphere populations. Note also the greenish color present in some southerners, it is a natural pigment found in hyperborean fauna but rarely seen in birgs north of the equator. Twowic peoples are sort of oddballs not just for their blue-ish integument but that their patterns can also be distinctly asymmetrical. For your convenience, I mocked up this chart showing some sample body color/pattern combos by ethnic group. These are by no means the full spread of birg diversity, and thereās plenty of mixing and matching of traits in areas where different populations meet, but this should give the gist of it.
I desperately need to know more about your sentient wizard castle oc!
Hello, glad you asked! I tend to be secretive about my dragon lore in case I ever run a dnd adventure in this setting for my friends, so I will put a cut under this image, which is a mixed media piece I did depicting the Castle and its True Self:
The nameless dragon of the great bitter lake has been wandering the perimeter of this mostly dry basin for longer than anyone can remember. Its body resembles a great big nonsensical castle, cobbled together from hazy memories of a bygone civilization as old and mysterious as the dragon itself. It seems to flicker in and out of existence like a mirage, and none who have tried to force their way into its halls have succeeded, or at least returned to tell the tale. In some ways, it is perfectly ordinary for a brass dragon: they roam, they observe, and they try, in their lofty, alien way, to Understand the world around them.
Most dragons construct and inhabit a lair, which are an extension of itself as a web to a spider. This dragon has become its own lair. Beyond the metaphysical courtyards that surround the inner castle, one may find that the arrangement of chambers mirror the internal structure of the dragonās material body. Of course, a walking castle can only observe the world in broad strokes, so to keep up with the world on a more granular scale, it relies on the little fairy-creatures that serve it to visit the world below and be its eyes and ears, to find it companions. Should you be lucky enough to be invited into its walls, it may keep you for a few days, or months, or decades, until it has exhausted every conceivable conversation topic with you. You will not be speaking directly to the dragon, of course, but a lair projection in the approximate form of a human. It may show you around its grand house, from the lofty tower of its mind, to the labyrinthine dungeon of its bowels, but the chamber of the heart is eternally barred to outsiders. Some would posit that whatever priceless treasures its hoard contains are stashed away there. The Castle has a long memory, and a particular interest in the slow processes of ecological change in the basin, though the business of men and elves and other little folk will interest it too. When it grows bored of your company, you may politely ask to take your leave, and perhaps be escorted back to the world of mortal creatures, though you may find that considerably more time has passed on the surface than you perceived, and the memory of your time with the dragon fading as if only a dream. Beware, it may also just retreat into itself and leave you to wander the halls of its body until you lose yourself entirely. Those who thoroughly offend or otherwise break the contract of its hospitality are put into a state of somnambulism, and become fixtures of the lair itself.
The oldest inhabitant of the lair is the Angel, which presumably Fell into the lake after being struck down in some divine battle many eons ago. Its halo is lost to history (or so the dragon, which sees All in the basin, has told it), and without it can never heal itself, or find its way back to the firmament. The angel may have been the dragonās first companion, but now is all but forgotten by its new host, and lives as a caged bird in the lair. Angels need a purpose (not unlike certain dog breeds), and this one busies itself with tending the garden, never mind that none of the plants are real. The ethereal space of a dragonās lair is a close enough substitute for the celestial habitat of angels, in any case; better it be trapped here forever than to become some wretched Lower Thing on the surface, it thinks. Itās friendly enough, though most guests find its mutilated appearance offputting, and very few speak or understand its ancient dialect. It looks something like this:
Not sure if youāre up to speed on this setting already but for some extra context hereās a post I made about metallic dragons in general, another one about how kobolds work, and some commissioned art of a different brass dragon.
Inspired by the series of art style memes Dimetrodone has been using, I decided it was time to get over my art block and have some fun myself, featuring my three most frequently drawn characters.
I drew one of @turbofanatic ās Hellflowers for a Secret Santa art exchange. I had some creative leeway with the design since each one can look unique, so I opted to lean into the ābig weird insectā look for this lovely lady.

A relatively cheap and common form of indoor lighting in Twowi households are slime lanterns; strains of bioluminescent microbes native to certain freshwater wetland environments. Centuries of cultivation have given rise to cultures that will glow brightly for many hours on relatively little feed (a mix of powdered pond scum and clay minerals). Many strains are unique to individual clans, and a clanās reserve of āmoonbloodā is regarded as a treasured family heirloom.
Care of slime lanterns is fairly simple: when light is needed, measure the needed ration of feed, mix it into the culture, and wait a few minutes. More feed will favor a brighter light over time as the microbes rapidly reproduce, but will ultimately dim as the original batch dies and clouds the water faster than their nutrients can be recycled. Good upkeep requires keeping the jar topped off with water and regular water changes.
In summer, when the light from the sun is almost constant and shipās prism type indoor lights are more reliable, larger slime lanterns are emptied and a reserve of the mother culture is put into cold storage to save on feed.
This is an old post from my Patreon, decided to switch it to public and share here because itās one of my favorite tidbits Iāve come up with in the last few years.
So I just discovered Birgworld like, today. Where is the start of it, so I can read it from the beginning?
Hiya, welcome! Unfortunately, Iāve been posting about this setting for long enough that a lot of the older stuff is now outdated, and my approach to worldbuilding is very much āwhatever interested me and I had the spoons to format a post about this weekā over any particular creative direction. I am in the process of building a website to organize and introduce my work in a more accessible format, but in the meantime, the best I can recommend is to search my ābirgworldā, ābirdbugsā, and āswooceā tag to get a general sense of the project. ā¦.hope this helps!
