but, most importantly, just have fun with drawing body hair :) it comes in so many different styles for so many people, just get silly with it! use refs!
As promised â all freebies are now available as one big download, including backgrounds and assets!

Green and blue respectively.

Bruce Willis is probably going to keep making action movies because you know what they say about old habits
fucked up how colors look different depending on what screen youâre looking at them on. that should be illegal I think
this fucking shit, you know
I spend so much time carefully picking and adjusting the colors in every single drawing I make that Iâd probably lose my mind if I didnât just repeatedly push this out of my memory and pretend itâs not a thing. Why am I reblogging a blank empty post that doesnât say anything??? Weird
good news! you canât make sure that everyone will see the correct colors on their own device, but you can make sure your monitor is as accurate as possible for printing and sharing by calibrating it!Â
there are a bunch of free monitor tests, but hereâs an easy one you can use. the passmark and eizo tests are also pretty good, though passmark doesnât work in your browser. be warned that some tests may cause eye strain.
you can either use the settings built into your monitor itself or use the display color calibration settings in your operating system to adjust the settings until everything looks correct, and then enjoy your accurate colors.
REBLOG TO SAVE A LIFE
Photographers, too. Color calibrate your monitors if you intend to print or sell your work. Thereâs a ton of info out there for this.
For everyone asking me about Pern templates, hereâs what youâve been waiting for! I plan to make more in the future, including whers, flitts, flights, etc. Just thought Iâd start with a standard ref.

historically, pixel art was rendered on limited hardware, there were strict limits on how many colours could be displayed on screen at once and in a single sprite.
These limits no longer exist, so you are no longer beholden to any of them. Despite what you might hear in certain pixel art spaces, there arenât really any rules anymore, because thereâs no technical limitations forcing you to work a specific way. You can make your pixel art have as many colours as you want, be whatever size you like, and have as many frames as you want it to.
However! the smaller you make a sprite, the harder things will become to read unless you shrink down the number of colours in equal measure.
In a photo you might have. i dunno. 1,000,000 pixels in it or something like that. Thats like a really small photo but thatâs still so many pixels that you donât really notice any of them individually. They all blend together into one big mass to tell you what youâre looking at in groups of hundreds!
On the other hand, in a 16x16 sprite youâll only have 256 of them. Every single individual pixel can have something to say!
But if every pixel is trying to say something at once, it muddies the sprite and makes it hard to read. However, if a group of pixels are all the same colour, theyâre all saying the same thing, and it becomes a lot easier to understand what youâre looking at.
like, for example, take a look at this 16x16 crop of a random photo.
does that look like a whole lot of nothing? yeah . theres 256 pixels, and theres 256 colours. the pixels arenât really working together to tell you anything, so instead it just becomes one big vague mass. if i reduce the colour count to just 6 colours and increase the contrast, though,
it starts to look less like visual noise, and more like water at sunset!
The contrast is important - part of why you want to keep your colour count low is to make groups of pixels distinct from each other.
But, how exactly do you keep your colour count low, anyway?
a colour ramp refers to the gradient of colours in your palette that are used to shade one particular colour, such as tempests hair or her skin
instinctively youâre probably going to want to make individual gradients of colour for each of these things.
however, if you connect these ramps together, you can greatly reduce the number of colours youâre using in your piece. This also helps create a cohesive palette!
when it comes to connecting ramps, value matters much more than individual hues. you want to have a good range of values to have a readable sprite!
I think actually a really good example of value mattering more than hue in sprites, is this guide to anti aliasing by pixeljoint user ptoing
also just generally good advice, but take a look at this bit in particular
despite the wildly varying hues, they work together just fine. by focusing on the value when you combine your ramps, you can create some really interesting colour palettes!
anyway. now for some vaguer notes on how i do lighting
anyway thems just some thoughts for you all

Do you have any tips or tricks for drawing dragon wings in any folded/half foldes pose? I find the wing skin folds to be the most difficult thing when drawing dragons, they usually cover up half the image and just look wonky when I try ;w;
Alright, youâre about to see some diagrams that are not 100% biologically accurate but hopefully theyâll illustrate my points. Also, most of this I am basing on bat wings because thatâs the closest real life reference we have to dragon wings. OKAY.Â
First letâs talk about whatâs going on with the edges of the wing membrane. The whole membrane is like one giant stretchy piece of spandex. When all the digits are extended the membrane gets stretched taut, but when the wing relaxes the membrane retracts into itself. What does this look like?
The edges pull inward, like this. What they donât do is fold up like a piece of fabric.Â
The very edge of the membrane often has a tiny ridge. This is caused by the folding of the skin, as well bundles of elastin fibers that we wonât get into right now! On occasion there will be some wrinkles, but they are generally on the membranes themselves and donât present themselves much along the edge.Â
Check out these wrinkles here. The pink arrow shows a pretty âlargeâ wrinkle, which is present on the plagiopatagium (membrane between the body and the last digit of the wing hand.) This is a very large piece of skin, so if there are going to be any large wrinkles they will be here! But even still, itâs not nearly as extreme as the floppy âfabricâ example I drew above.Â
Here you can see more wrinkles on the wing surface that donât really express along the edge nearly as much as you might expect. All things considered, theyâre pretty subdued!
This wing is half-folded and it still just looks like big smooth shapes. They have to get pretty darn folded before wrinkles start happening. Until then, the edges of the wings are just gentle curved lines. Nothing to worry about!
As for poses, remember that a dragon wing is just like your arm. It has a shoulder, an elbow, a hand, and fingers. They are just really elongated versions of each. Just like on your hand, the fingers are flexible and can bend at the joints. Here are three quick steps for drawing crazy wing poses:1. Sketch out the arm and finger parts.Â
2. Draw a deeply curved line to represent the edge of the wing membrane (blue.) Also draw curved lines between each pair of knuckles (pink.) This will help you see where that membrane is going.Â
3. Erase the parts that are invisible from the viewerâs angle.Â
This was kind of just a fast overview. I hope it answered your question, and if it didnât, shoot me another note and Iâll try to be more thorough!Â
