If you want to write a parody of mainstream superhero comics, you need to go into it with the full understanding that mere grotesquerie will get you nowhere. There is no level of vulgar hyperbole that will surpass the excesses of the genuine article. There's an actual, published DC supervillain whose deal is he jerked off so much that his hands phased into another dimension, and in his dreams he can visit a magic tree that bears gloves instead of fruit which he can telekinetically "wear", and each glove gives him a different set of super powers.

The really fun part is that the fact that Coagula's matter-manipulation powers emit a halo of light in trans pride colours is apparently pure coincidence; she originally appeared from 1993 through 1995, while the modern trans pride colours weren't broadly settled upon until ca. 1999.

The point is not "this is what your average mainstream superhero comic looks like" – of course that's not the case.

The point is "this is what one of the biggest multinational corporate publishers of mainstream superhero comics has routinely been willing to put their name and logo on" (and ultimately, neither of these examples are particularly extreme ones on that count).

If your objective is to write an incisive parody of the medium, merely making your characters unseemly isn't going to cut it, because you'll almost inevitably fail to rise even to the level of fuckery that the institutions you're lampooning are willing to attach their own brands to. No matter what you come up with, if all you've got in the barrel is making it weird and gross, it's practically guaranteed that the guys you're trying to make fun of have already outdone you!

I feel like I’m reading Robin 1993 wrong it genuinely feels like a horror story about a boy slowly sabotaging his own life, isolating from loved ones, putting himself through psychological torture to constantly live up to an impossible standard, all to earn the approval of a man who is cold, critical, and distant most of the time.

When he finally snapped and decided to quit while he was sitting on the porch steps with Steph in the middle of the day thinking about reclaiming his life, I was like omg yes this feels so good and fulfilling as a reader I’m so happy to see the protagonist finally get a break from the constant gloom of living in Dick’s shadow… And then he goes back to Bruce and it’s genuinely so depressing, which is why I feel like I’m reading this wrong. Like was that page of Batman and Robin reuniting supposed to feel good?? My god. Literally just bums me out. Like ok he’s going back to the dominating abusive presence in his life that makes him miserable. Yay. Complete with Bruce explicitly refusing to believe he did anything wrong.

And the worst part is when he was deciding to go back to him, it wasnt bc he wanted to keep being a hero/helping people. That didn’t gross his mind at all. It was 100% because he was going to miss Bruce and he knew he would be iced out completely if he defied him by quitting Robin. My stomach hurts
