Perhaps I judged him too harshly
eepy duke and damian ft alfred for @spinninggaround via @dcforgaza
When Damian’s in the picture it’s all “He’s bad for the Batfam because it’s meant to be an adoptive found family! A biological child ruins the concept!” Yet now everyone is fine with Alfred’s grand-niece joining the family for no other reason but to fill in Alfred’s role? Not even trying to hate here I just don’t understand the double standard.
Whenever I see people act like Damian got a better Bruce experience than the other batkids b/c "Bruce has learned from his mistakes" I feel like they're only reading OOC fanfic and WFA.
I'm a sucker for Bruce being a good parent for Damian (especially if the writer manages to keep them being the complicated characters they are at the same time), but let's not forget that stuff like Bruce not wanting Damian at first, Bruce not knowing nor caring about what Damian was doing between 2018 and 2020 or Bruce not comforting Damian after Alfred's death all happened.
And I think it's very important to keep these things in mind instead of just labeling it "bad writing" because it's important for understanding Damian's character and his actions. He's not just a brat, he's a troubled child having to navigate life with a very difficult father.

REAL and TRUE and INDISPUTABLE ranking of Damian Wayne’s favorite siblings
Maya Ducard
Clone brothers he made the island sanctuary for
Dick
Stephanie
Duke
the rest
I've said this before and I will say this again. A conflict between Bruce and Damian being compelling relies heavily (what am I even saying? 100%) on Bruce giving a fuck about Damian.
If the author writes Damian as someone Bruce resents or only sees as a hated obligation? There is nothing compelling about that! Damian should simply be on his own or with someone else if Bruce is written like this. We know he can survive on his own just fine, the only thing Bruce has to offer to Damian at this point is unconditional love and comfort. So if that's not there in the writing...why is Damian staying?
This is echoing many other’s statements but it truly does feel like Fraction is writing (or at least pulling from) GM’s Bruce. The way he frames Bruce’s opinions on Talia (unwilling tourist in her world, abandoned her child to cause havoc) and Damian (burden laid upon him, a “ticking time bomb”) are both so reminiscent of Morrison’s run that it has to be somewhat intentional.
Now I think we all know the issues with using Morrison’s work (especially anything having to do with Talia), they used xenophobic, anti-arab, and just racist rhetoric and tropes in their writing. So Fraction’s continuing use of them is clearly emblematic of the continued racism within DC stories and his own personal biases.
If that doesn’t sway you though I do think on a narrative and character level choosing to do this is negative too, in regards to Damian and Talia but also in regards to Bruce—who the whole damn book is supposed to be about! By having Bruce think about and behave towards Damian like this is all the way back in 2010 we’re left with an emotionally immature and frankly emotionally abusive version of Bruce. Especially because Fraction hasn’t erased all of Damian’s growth (though definitely walked back a lot of stuff, which I’ve said before), for example Damian’s not particularly angry or argumentative with Bruce, he doesn’t insult him and he takes his lumps. At worst he’s sulky and a little obstinate due to his own self esteem issues, but Bruce is still reacting to him and talking about him like Damian is behaving the exact same way he did in 2010. It makes Bruce look awful, and regresses his character horribly.
This is a similar problem with Talia, he talks about her to Dr. Zeller in tone that has you suspecting he never even loved her, that he never wanted anything with her. That’s not only contradicted by the decades of stories before Morrison’s run (particularly SOTD) but also by runs we’ve had since then! Ram V had Talia saving Bruce several times, had Bruce reflecting on his love for her, hell even H2SH had Talia saving Bruce and them kissing. So what, am I to believe Bruce is just so bitter that he’s badmouthing her like this despite all that? That’s he’s forgotten it? That he’s so in to Dr. Zeller that he’s throwing the mother of his child under the bus? At best it makes him look stupid and selfish, and at worst it makes him look racist (“unorthodox traditions”).
fraction’s batman was always unimaginative at best but it feels particularly sinister to tear down the character of a brown woman (who’s one of the strongest and genuine love interests of bruce) in favour of the new white love interest, completely just making shit up to paint her as an unfeeling seductress AGAIN while insulting her culture for no added plot value all at the same time. how the hell do you even manage that in one single page
saying that talia ran away after dropping damian in his lap LAUGHING and that bruce was unwilling the whole time (grown man mind you) had to fix the ticking time bomb that is his mixed race child because he grew up with her cultural traditions instead of his own and that the new white love interest is needed here more than his own mother. who are these people WHERE AM I
Defending Talia from racists through social media isn't enough actually I need like. A knife or something. I need DC to hire sensitivity consultants to vet their writers at the absolute fucking least

anyways here’s some panels of talia with her baby boy!!
Behold, my magnum opus. I've peaked here. Matt Fraction is coughing in 3 days for his crimes against the Al Ghuls.
something that feels particularly hard to swallow about writers constantly mischaracterising talia’s relationship with damian and completely removing love and affection from it in an attempt to paint her as unfeeling and apathetic and cruel is that (especially from the pov of a brown/asian woman myself) family values, for better or for worse, are such an integral part of asian culture in general, but that’s one part of talia’s character that is consistent in how she’s torn between family loyalty and romantic love BECAUSE SHE LOVES SO MUCH!!! she loves sooo much and so hard. and they want me to believe she ran away laughing i feel sick
one more thing about that batman panel. what a stupid justification, annika knows that damian is robin so you tell her that you thought batman could help him grow in ways you couldn’t? i don’t think i’m fit to raise my son let me just call the bat themed vigilante, he’ll for sure know what to do. what?? this is stupid. you created a stupid problem, give it a stupid “solution” and you made bruce looks stupid. wtf
I already ranted about this when Fraction resolved the unneccesary conflict between Bruce and Damian two issues ago, but literally all of this feels utterly pointless. He's not exploring anything that hasn't been done much better by other writers. He clearly does not get or cares about Damian, yet insists on writing him or about him and his mother even though everyone is asking him to stop. He has Bruce revealing very intimate stuff (without even asking Damian first) to a random person all longterm comic readers know is going go end up unimportant and forgotten and it was 1. Not needed 2. It doesn't even makes sense.
If a guy told me what Bruce told Zeller I would say nothing, awkwardly do finger guns at him and then try to get away from him fast.
anyways lads, talia al ghul in the first few days after leaving her son with bruce. talia al ghul walking away with a feeling of suffocating emptiness. talia al ghul walking away with that sinking feeling in her gut and that tightness in her chest that comes with grieving and missing someone who isn’t dead. talia al ghul swallowing down the lump in her throat, forced to go on with her day to day life and maintain her decorum without her son. talia ‘my fate is to be a mother and suffer for it’ al ghul

saying the league of assassins is a cultural thing is crazy by the way. as far as i know, neither arabs nor chinese people have this custom of creating cults. could be just me, though…
Batman #11
Hey Bruce, Dr. Zeller has no idea that you're talking about the League of Assassins, so you're just sounding insanely racist.
