     In response Fenris gave a short nod. Still, the language had unsettled him    a little. Surely, she did not intend to converse in Elvish all the time? He was    hardly skilled enough to hold an intricate conversation (the kind he preferred)   in it at that time. “You’re welcome. …I do not speak much Elven, actually. If   you don’t mind - common tongue?”

    “Ah– Sorry, I said ‘thank you,’” she apologized, cheeks blemished in a light shade of red in response. Niari did not know much of the Elven language, honestly. She only knew two phrases, but they were enough for her to show common decency within the clan. The sincere gratitude only slipped out in the ephemeral moment of content from eating the snack.

    Her thoughts returned to her clan, and her default frown only intensified. They could not have really left her, could they? She tried her best to behave herself, this time, to avoid her previous mistakes. If only the Creators could be merciful and...

    A sudden growl interrupted her thoughts. It was the slight trembling of her stomach that notified Niari that the noise came from her. Perhaps her body was reacting to finally tasting something after days of fasting. Niari would have probably found it funny if it did not hurt.

     It had been a couple of hours since Fenris had invited the elven child into   the space he inhabited. She sat in front of the fireplace, wolfing down the  dinner he had offered. Fenris took a seat on a wooden bench and watched   her. He did not know of her intentions or past. It was better if he did not find  out anything, didn’t get sentimental, didn’t-… 

               Instead, words found their way past his lips. “What is            your name?” Odd sense of compassion had overpowered           the caution.

     She stayed for a while. Fenris liked to explain it with logic - in him Niari had   found a source of food, warmth, a place to sleep, protection even. It made   sense. What didn’t, however, was how she always seemed to be around him   as Fenris sharpened his sword, did his best to make something akin to a   decent dish for a meal or simply sat by the fire trying to figure out the letters  in a book borrowed from Hawke.

               They did not always talk in such times. Often it was simply           a comfortable shared silence. It was comforting, somehow.

     He had thought of her as a child but was she not more like a young mother   instead? Worry had creased Niari’s eyebrows as Fenris returned that night -  limping, with blood trickling down from his side where a blade had cut past   the leather and made a dent in skin. Fenris would have denied help if she   asked. She didn’t. When Fenris’s swimming vision evened out, Niari was   already there with a bowl of warm water and a clean cloth. 

              ”Thank you…” he muttered under his breath.

     The child was kind, to the point it worried Fenris. The world would break her  if she did not steel her will. But she proved him wrong. So very, very wrong.

               Intruders were too many in numbers. Even his speed           and power did not seem enough. It was then - bright flames             erupted to his right. Stunned, Fenris glanced back to find            the soft gaze of his companion determined, another            combustion grenade of his already in her hand. 

     Both of them fighting then? Very well! The heavy sword cut the air once more.

               It was hard to believe she was about to go. Fenris had            gotten used to the constant presence of the girl in the             house. She was best company he could ask for among            other things. Fenris frowned as he stood and made his            way across the room to Niari who was gathering the last            of things Fenris had insisted she take. The warrior added            one more to that - a silverite dagger. “To keep yourself             safe.”
