We always come back.
For years they’d promised each other that no matter what, no matter where they ended up..they would come back. They would fight and fight their way back to one another. Most would just consider this a cute tradition or something stupid to post in a hashtag on a couples vacation photo on social media. Something trivial, holding little weight or meaning in what were considered real life situations but for them..it wasn’t a phrase. It wasn’t a hashtag or a see you tomorrow, it was a promise. A notion that held great significance. From law enforcement to the literal end of the world it was a fucking promise and one that Luke truly held onto for the past couple of years, not once did he lose hope or faith in Sally. Regardless of the odds, of the unknown -- he did know her. Her strength. Her will.
They were bound to be here, paused in this moment in time. Her hand outstretched towards him and his heart risen in his throat. “You don’t even know what you’re getting int -” Stunted, remaining syllables cut short by Sally’s quick rebuttal before they could circle back to where they’d began. They hadn’t fought, really..it was agreed upon early into their relationship that no matter what issues arose, they could work it out. They would, they were. He just - how could she be so sure? Was she even sure to begin with, or was she so hellbent on diving into this case that she wasn’t taking the time to factor her own safety into the equation? That was what jarred him; that missing, crucial part. This wasn’t a matter of trust, this was a matter of concern, and whether or not he needed to be concerned when it came to a case like this. There was a reason surgeons weren’t allowed to operate on loved ones and there was a reason she was keeping this matter private. That was the beginning, he didn’t want her to meet an end. Never had Luke tried to prevent Sally from doing what she was meant to do in this world - not once, and he still wasn’t, but never had she been so attached to a case before, either.
Then her fingers were entwined with his, the dust between them coming to settle as an air of understanding shone in shared gaze. We always come back, right? A deep inhalation, then. Calming their emotions as the storm in his eyes began to fade into sincerity; matching the honesty in the unique look he’d grown rather fond of, one of love and vulnerability. “We do,” he agreed, meeting her step forward with one of his own, “I just want you to be careful, okay, and not every day careful - this is different, and you know it. One hand remain where it belong, holding her left hand warmly in his. Their security, a means of trust. The other rose to cup Sally’s cheek, softly, nearly as soft as their unwavering gaze. Forehead lent to rest atop forehead, nose brushing tip of nose.
