Love character relationships that can only be described as "whatever the fuck these two have going on"
For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )
"Delete all the nudes and sexts after a breakup or you're a piece of shit" has been the standard expectation since EIGHT. TEEN. EIGHTY. FIVE.
"Men and women being friends with each other is literally normal. Don't be a controlling freak."
Anyway I was wrong the publishing date is actually 1882 so like.
"If you have to abuse a child to keep order in your classroom then you're a bad teacher."
So like @ the modern Republican party, are the "traditional family values" in the fucking room with us right now--
soon I will be euthanized due to my various behavioral issues and also they just don’t like me
The Expanse has really upped my standards for space battles now.
I adore Star Trek but in pretty much every fight, the bridge crew jiggle about in spinny office chairs with NO SEATBELTS while the stunt guy takes a quick nap on the floor
Meanwhile, the Rocinante crew are strapped in, screaming, injected to the gills with anti brain exploding juice, dodging the block of cheese punching a hole in the reinforced hull at 10000km/h because someone forgot to lock the fridge

Okay, so, I'm about 60% into Abaddon's Gate (the third book of the Expanse series) and so much of it is bugging the shit outta me, lol. Holden (the entirety of the Rocinante) and Clarissa's arcs are great, no notes. I really like Tilly here too, more than in the TV show, but...
Gods is it tone deaf when it comes to racism/systemic oppression/colonialism. Pisses me off something fierce that every single Belter in the Behemoth is either an asshole, a coward, or a doormat. Sam barely even gets angry at Bull throwing her under the bus. Pa is a coward. Ashford is the most useless and detestable character in the book. He doesn't drive the story anywhere and he exists only for every single character, even Clarissa after hearing him speak at most six sentences, to consider him a complete idiot and thus elevate Bull's competence. Bull, who is an inner. Bull, who can't be captain only because he's an earther and who constantly brings this up/laments this fact as a tragic politically-motivated injustice that puts everyone at a disadvantage (this reeeeks of 'reverse racism' bullshit). And the guy is just another Miller, but much shittier as a character. Another "all i care abt is my work and I'm so competent at it because I'm a no-nonsense guy capable of doing whatever it takes, but otherwise I'm a drunkard incapable of living a decent life" boring asshole. At least Miller was a self-aware version of the "noir detective" trope because the book showed us that he was actually considered a has-been loser by everyone who worked with him. He didn't actually solve more cases than anyone else or anything of the sort.
Like, the only competent Belter I've seen in a little over 12 hours (of 20) of this book is Naomi, who was already our girl, and who's not really showing up much at all. And Bull's supposed to be some sort of Belter advocate? Puke.
Ugh. The series did SUCH a good job doing away with Bull, and reassigning what he does in the book to Camina (who's such a wonderful character!!!) and Ashford, making the whole tug-of-war for leadership a dispute between belter and belter, as it should be. A thousand times better, so kudos to the showrunners.
But what motivated me to write this is the bit I just listened to, in which Anna, who has been a really good character so far and presented as a kind of empathetic moral compass, says something along the lines of: "Humans were driven by curiosity to risk the unknown and set sail towards new lands not knowing what they were going to find. And that audacity drove progress and it was not hubris." Bitch please; go study some basic history on the mercantile era. Europeans were driven by curiosity my fucking ass - they were driven by greed. By the search for an alternative route to India that would allow them to import goods cheaper. For riches. After the first ones found the Americas, the greed got even worse. Those who would embark on that perilous journey did so because they knew it was a "high risk high reward" situation. They were ready to completely devastate lands and peoples for gold and silver and whatever else they could find. Is she fucking daft? And that is especially asinine coming from a religious character (who, once again, was clearly supposed to represent a reasonable, charitable, humble priest), if you know anything at all about the role religion had in the conquest of "the new world."
All I can hope for is for these two characters' vomit-worthy hypocrisy to be pointed out by the narrative? But I'm not holding my breath. There is absolutely no sign that it is self-aware when it comes to these two inners.
Again, the TV show nailed it with the adaptations they made.
