Dear homophobes on the train home from pride,
We understand it must have been deeply upsetting for you to come to the realisation that 50% of the carriage you were in were LGBTQ. After all, we know that underneath your tough guy act you are not made of much. Maybe you talk about special snowflakes so much because it takes so very little to make you insecure. We know. We see right through you.
When you said âeww itâs full of weirdo gays, letâs get out of here,â we saw through you. Maybe you really are afraid of us. Maybe there is something about our joy that frightens you. But that says more about you than it ever will about us.
Did you really believe that when you started shouting at one of us, that no one else in the carriage would say something? It would appear you did. You werenât ready for the trans boy to calmly tell you that straight people are just as weird. You werenât ready for the older butch lesbian couple who told you to fuck off. You werenât ready for me, the bi girl covered in rainbows, to come from the back of the carriage and tell you to sit down and shut up because nobody cares what you have to say.
Is that why you do it? Do you know deep down that nobody cares what you have to say? Is that why you try so hard to provoke a reaction?
You certainly werenât ready to be faced by straight allies who didnât want any of your shit either. Did you think they would take your side? Think again.
Is that why you followed us off the train, me and the boy with a trans flag as a cape and love painted on his cheeks? Were you hoping to win what you knew you were losing?
Perhaps you were hoping to make us as afraid as you are deep down, underneath all the gunk and grot you call a personality. Or perhaps you were just hoping to ruin our good day.
But hereâs the thing about Pride, the thing you will never understand.
You didnât ruin a goddamn thing. Because of you, me and Rory got talking as we walked home together, just in case you decided to try following again. We talked about a lot of things but what we talked about most was you. Not in anger or in fear. We joked about you. We made fun of you. We laughed at you.
Thatâs what youâre afraid of isnât it? Someone judging you, so you have to judge first.
You canât frighten us on a day like today. Weâve just seen how many of us there are and we are filled up with that knowledge. We will only laugh at you. Only make you into jokes in our heads, a funny story to tell about the journey home.
