"I'm not afraid of you."

The words are hushed, whispered into the space between them with a reverence and sincerity that made the god curl his lip.

“You should be.”

The human – Matthew… Matt – raised his head to stare at him, eyes the colour of burnt caramel or amber, and his thin lips parted in a smile.

“You’re a god in possession of the world’s fears and misfortunes, yet you treat me like something delicate and precious. How can I fear you?”

“I could kill you so easily,” Mare whispered, reaching to tenderly brush copper hair out of Matt’s face. “Use your fears to end your life.”

“And when I reawaken in Hell, I will thank you,” Matt replied, leaning into Mare’s touch as he stepped closer.

“You’re insane,” the god scoffed, cradling Matt’s face with both of his hands.

“And you’re the only thing that makes me feel good.”

“You need mortal friends,” Mare hummed, relaxing into Matt’s touch as the human slid his fingers under the collar of his shirt to trace the tattoos against his skin.

“They don’t like me,” he murmured, eyes growing sad as he moved his hands to slip under the hem of Mare’s shirt to hug his waist, hiding his surprise as the god let him.

Everything in his soul told him to stop, to either smite this human or claim him and take him to his domain, but Mare couldn’t bring himself to follow tradition right then.

And the sound that left Matt when their lips finally, finally met almost drove him insane, one hand cradling the back of Matt’s head while the other pressed against the small of his back to push them almost impossibly close.

Melting into the kiss, Matt threw his arms around Mare’s neck and allowed the god to take control, tilting his head to deepen the kiss until Matt’s knees buckled and he was lightheaded with the need to breathe.

“Stay with me,” Matt panted as the kiss broke, clutching onto Mare’s shirt like a lifeline as his eyes watered and his lip trembled with the very thought that the god may leave.

“Maybe,” Mare rumbled, following Matt as the human sank to the ground and swallowing his questions with another searing kiss that clouded his mind and stole his breath.

Maybe he could keep Matt. Maybe he could ignore tradition… just once.

Every god had a weakness, and Matthew would look lovely covered in Mare’s aura.
