my letterboxd review (4.5 stars):

“not only does this movie indicate a shift in not just horror films but a shift in cinema as a whole, it's also just a really good movie.

kane did an amazing job executing his vision, and i'm ecstatic that A24 took a chance on this project.

the cinematography to set up suspense was some of the best i've ever seen, the use of color was stunning, the set design was unsurprisingly amazing, the scares were earned—i could keep complimenting this movie forever.

i do slightly agree with criticism about the script, but I can excuse it seeing that kane has never tackled a project like this before.

overall, GREAT movie. i can't wait to see what else kane does and i patiently am awaiting the inevitable 15 hour long wendigoon video about this film.

SPOILERS FOR THE BACKROOMS:

people saying this movie didn’t add to the backrooms lore but they must’ve watched the movie with their eyes closed:

- we learned more about AYSNC: they used to be a normal company that just made MRI machines, and we learned more about what exactly they were doing in the complex with the caveman cutouts

- we learned the life forms are different than we thought, either a beginning or after stage of pirate clark

- we got a LOT about how still lives work which we never really saw in the series.

- the time distortion isn’t as random as we thought, clark was able to travel in and out consistently and move through time in the real world normally for the most part

- hey can i stress again we got so much more information on still lives????
