It's still National Rum Day in two U.S. time zones. I celebrated with a simple Devil's Reef on the rocks. (at Fine and Rare)

The first whiskey I drank consistently was Jameson (Thanks, Aaron and Mike!). To this day, it's still my go to especially in dive bars. I almost didn’t celebrate National Daiquiri Day. Then I listened to the The Daily Beast’s Life Behind Bars podcast today and Dave Wondrich shared the Cuban way to make one as well as the rich history of the cocktail as only he could and I was inspired. It’s so simple. A teaspoon of sugar and the juice of a half lime stirred in a shaker. Then add 2 oz of white rum, ice and shake “the hell out of it” and then strain into a chilled glass. Done

While I am not at Tales of the Cocktail, I did finally get to reopened The Campbell Bar last week! For my Whiskey Wednesday cocktail, this is their Vieux Carre | Hudson Whiskey Manhattan Rye, Hennessy VSOP, Benedictine, Dolin Rouge, Angostura Bitters and Peychauds Bitters.

Today I was introduced to Devil's Reef, a cinnamon spiced rum, via a tasting at NYC's Fine and Rare. Here it is in Fine and Rare's Smoking Rum Old Fashioned | Devil's Reef Rum, fig jam, grapefruit bitters, orange peel garnish and smoke of your choice (hickory, applewood, mesquite or cherrywood). As a big fan of Old Fashioneds, I've never thought of trying rum as it's base spirit. I was enlightened today.

I often have brilliant/terrible ideas -- often related to or involving liquor. Case in point, when I heard @burgerking was doing a @luckycharms milkshake, I immediately thought about spiking it with @jamesonwhiskey. I wasn't sold on the idea until @liquordotcom posted a piece proposing the same because great minds... I decided that today was the day because Whiskey Wednesday. The result was boozy, sweet and ice cold. I am still shaking from the sugar.

Post Battle Of The Barrow (more on that later), I still came home and made a Pina Colada because it’s National Pina Colada Day. A tropical nightcap if you will…

The result is a boozy sipper that is perfect for a nice summer night like tonight.
