i also think trinity has the lesbian audacity (affectionate) to be taking home 16 gauge needles and doing at home piercings. it's her crowning achievement that despite how needle skittish he is, she gets dennis to let her pierce his ears. rabbot freaks out about this when they find out, but trinity stands by her work and to her credit, the piercings do heal well and are well placed. trinity gives me the vibes of a girl that would do a lip ring on herself.

(This is all coming from headcanons that were around for steve/robin platonic soulmates era of strangerthings (still there and will never leave) so there's a quite a bit I've taken from that and pushed onto this new sibling duo. )

they share their middle names, calling each other 'trinity issac' and 'dennis maria'

the wardrobe is for them both. They are consistently in each others clothes they don't know whose is whose anymore. Sooo many flannels. Also same exact jean and shoe size

Cuddles after long shifts, needing that physical comfort they give eachother.

Speaking to eachother through facial expressions alone.

Answering for eachother when someone asked either of them a question:

"Whitaker we need your results on the patient in North 3?"

And without even looking up, trinity is passing over paperwork "yeah the bloods on there, nothing to worry about, just writing up some charting and he'll be over"

To which dennis is sitting there nodding as he types.

Trinity never finishes a protein bar, she gets the needed amount to give her a kick and then quite literally throws the last big bite at dennis in the wrapper, he catches it everytime and stuffs it in his mouth in impressive timing.

Just like dennis never finishes a can of monster, he'll just place it in trinity's hand and she'll just down whatever is left and whoever is going in the direction of the bin takes it to throw.

Javadi only asks once "aren't you guys like sharing spit doing that all the time?"

And they both look at her, with matching little frowns and eyes narrowing "not really" is the answer given as they both look away at the same time and carry on with what they were doing

This confuses javadi even more.

The whole pitt knows when they are arguing, as they don't talk to eachother outside of simple comments with patients ect. BUT they are touchier than ever. Constantly have arms pressed against eachother, leaning on one another when listening to an attending, one time they share a seat while charting/paperwork. But there's no talking. It's like their bodies see the argument as something devastating and needs to compensate somehow. It can last a couple days sometimes but when it's over it's known EVEN more, they give eachother the body space needed but they don't stop talking, they become more enthusiastic over cases but also more bratty and bitchy to eachother and everyone around them. God forgive anyone they double down on together.

Guard dogs for eachother, but beat eachother up/rough house. Someone new once, thought it was banter between everyone in the pitt and pushed trinity a bit too hard after a joke and dennis was already up and in their space bodily moving them away from trin while glaring. Yet trin and dennis will push eachother into walls and trip eachother up and slap eachother a lot and a lot harsher.

They are eachothers emergency contact

Have had many conversations about merging into one body or brain and how amazing that'd be

Trinity let's dennis puts flowers in her hair that he picks while they go on walks, he also has them in his. But she'll never let anyone else ever do that, they both press them when they get home and put in a scrapbook they share.

Knows eachothers type to a T and if they get anyone come in that fits it, they'll give eachother a look. No one has picked this up thou, and the pitt gets confused as to why they wide eye eachother around certain patients/staff.

So, I was googling a couple of them to understand the main theological stands of each one (I am Pentecostal, which is a branch of Lutherans, so there is some key differences in some of my core beliefs/traditions and most of the denominations present in Broken Bow), and I found the Mennonites very interesting both because of their focus in peace, communion and service. I thought it fitted well with the character and it had the additional fun of 1. allowing me to write Sunday School, something that is very important to my religious upbringing, and 2. It gave Santos a opportunity to mock Whitaker for having Amish and getting a 30 minutes lecture about how not all Anabathist is Amish and how Conservative Mennonite communities gave them a bad name, which is also very fun to me as someone that hates how a minority of Pentecosts make everyone think of us.

Also, Mennonites focus a lot in the New Testament in their teachings, at least according to all the Wikipedia articles and the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective (I have been researching for only 1 hour, give me some grace), which makes it easier for me to write Whitaker, since I my beliefs are more aligned with what Jesus said. Anyway- here comes the problem:

The First Mennonite Church of Broken Bow doesn't exist anymore. It closed on 1998, and even before that the worship services weren't held as often as I would like for story proposes. So I cannot let him grown Mennonite, unless I ignore the way actual Mennonites exist around the place he grown up in.

Since the decline in the number of members suggests that people were leaving the church rather than dieing, I could theoretically make Whitaker's mom a ex member of the Mennonites that left to join her husband's church in marriage but still teaches her kids that the most important parts of the Gospel is the ones that talk about Peace, Community and Service, I guess. Would that be too confusing tho? Because even if I have no intention to making this a explicit part of the text, maybe it will sound off to have his parents beliefs not aligned that much even if they aren't in the text for long. How 3d can I make a background character before it starts being distracting?

The other option is to tone down my ideas for the connection between Dennis faith and his people pleasing/helpful nature... or maybe circle back to make it fit after I choose another denomination for him?

It was a bit isolated from the city for most of its existence, being even closer to Merna than Broken Bow at one point. The area it was in was undeveloped, with a few poor farms with free ranging animals, and over 90% of the congregation was formed of farmers (including the minister), and no one had a college degree. And the congregation did "not subscribe to any great extent to the conservative customs still found in some of the more compact and isolated communities", sending their kids to the local public school.

See how this could be fun to explore this? But unfortunately it is a study from 1953. It doesn't exist anymore.

broken bow is a pretty small town (around 3,500ish people) that's smack in the middle of the state. I've never actually been out there, but based on the size I would guess that it has one stoplight, a couple dollar stores or gas stations, and probably at least two hardware stores. probably no walmart though. they do have a dinosaur-themed creationism/young earth museum, which is the batshit crazy nebraska that I know and love.

for the record all of nebraska has electricity and running water. even the really rural areas. most of the population is concentrated in the eastern portion of the state, especially in lincoln (capitol, 2nd largest city) and omaha (largest city). there's a joke in nebraska that our third largest city is the husker stadium on game day (factually accurate, it has about 30,000 more people than the real 3rd largest city when it's at capacity). 

the huskers (short for cornhuskers) are the college football team for the university of nebraska lincoln, and they're basically the religion of the state. husker fans are rabid. there's also a basketball team (and volleyball, baseball, etc.) but football is the most popular even though they fucking suck as any nebraskan can tell you. the omaha stormchasers (mentioned in the show) is the minor league (triple A) team. there's also the saltdogs baseball team in lincoln, which is an independent professional baseball team, but they don't get a lot of love. still, if whitaker's family was willing to drive over 3 hrs to omaha for a game, they might drive 2hrs and 50min to lincoln for the saltdogs.

also, I've seen a lot of trans dennis headcannons (which is awesome!! big fan!! lotta trans nebraskans in the world) and I want to note that all children are expected to do farmwork. even if you're raised the expectation of being a farmwife someday, you still learn how to run a farm, ostensibly to help your future husband. farms usually do corn or soybeans and sometimes also raise hogs. we do have ranchers and dairy farmers, but he'd probably specify that if it were the case for his family. most family farms don't hire farmhands, but there's usually neighbors around that might help out with harvest (community effort babyyyy)

religiously speaking, we do have amish communities, but they're really really small and nowhere near broken bow. most of the congregations are also like.... weirdly new to the state (relocated in the 2000s) but if you're doing fanfiction, live your truth yk. christianity is HUGE, especially in rural areas. catholicism is the single largest denomination (about 20%), but about a third of the population is some flavor of evangelical protestant. another twentyish percent is maintline protestant. honestly give him whatever kind of religious trauma you want bc it's all gravy baby

assuming he does go to college in nebraska, we don't really have a ton of schools to choose from. if you want to headcannon him as catholic, it would make sense for him to go to creighton, which is a catholic (jesuit) university in omaha. it's a big school for the med field, so it would make sense for him to switch from theology to medicine. the one caveat is that it's hella expensive, so it doesn't make a ton of sense for him to go there unless he got a crazy scholarship. concordia also has a (luthern) theology program (and a rulebook that prohibits same-sex behavior) so that's also an option (although it also has pretty high tuition, but again, scholarships). personally, I would probably guess that he went to university of nebraska lincoln (UNL) or university of nebraska omaha (UNO) bc they both offer religious studies majors and have much lower tuition for in-state students, which is a lot more likely for the first generation college student from a farm family. they're also in the university of nebraska system with UNMC (university of nebraska medical center) so a lot of UNO or UNL undergrads go to med school there. 

we do have gay bars in nebraska!! okay, not a ton, but back in the 90s, there were a lot more than you'd probably expect. some of the largest and oldest ones (like panic, in lincoln) closed during the pandemic. I think currently there's das haus (lincoln) the max (omaha, club), the sydney (unofficial lesbianish bar, omaha), and flixx (omaha). ngl the nightlife in nebraska is actually pretty shitty, but it does exist
