Quick Guide to Handicapped Humans

Yes, not EVERY human is handicapped in some way. Take as much time as you need to come to terms with this information before reading. This guide deals with outliers in the human condition that require special accommodations and you should be in a clear state of mind to accept this information properly.

Quick Guide: Ask the human in question what, if any, assistance they desire.

Physical Handicaps

Humans missing an appendage, regardless of accepting a mechanical replacement, will ask if they require assistance.

Do not ‘save’ a human from a task you deem impossible for them. This will only result in deeply insulting the human.

Humans who cannot see will most likely walk around with either a creature trained to assist them or a large stick. Do not fear either.

Do not feel obligated to assist them in moving, unless there has been recent major changes that may hurt them before they are aware of it themselves.

Do not introduce your full name every time you greet them, as these humans are (like all humans) capable of identifying you from voice alone. (This does not include nonverbal species.)

Humans who cannot hear rely on visual stimuli and alerts. Be sure to step into their field of vision well before approaching them.

Humans under a temporary impairment will require more assistance than those who have permanent impairments.

Humans with internal physical handicaps are well versed in their handicap and it’s solution. To save time and space, discuss with your human what, if anything, they may need from you.

Mental Handicaps

Most mental handicaps are considered learning disabilities but can also source many ‘human quirks’

Not all humans with quirks have these handicaps

Some mental handicaps drain human energy (see depression handbook) and some create excess energy (see ADHD handbook)

Some mental handicaps have triggers. Discuss with crew what triggers exist and the reactions they cause. Adjust as able.

A ‘learning disability’ does not mean a human cannot learn, simply that they learn differently.

More knowledge on these subjects can be found in various handbooks in the medical center on your ship.

Please use the following blank space as a quick reference sheet for your ship’s human crew special notes.

Final three rules to keep in mind.

Do not treat this category of human as different.

The more severe case of handicap, the more likely your medical officers will hold training sessions to better equip you to assist.

They made a deal with that witch. They wanted a son, and they got one. A son, one made out of clay and wood, flexible enough to grow but sturdy enough to withstand its destined path, enchanted to look like a human child. The witch asked for only one thing, and that was for their daughter.

She learned to deal with the people in the villages nearby, learned how to brew remedies and medicines and how to treat illness and injury, and learned how to tell when someone was lying. 

Every time the pair went into town, the people would remark at just how similar Thyme was to her mother. 

(Thyme does not know who and what she is. She does not know that she was born a princess, that she was sold. She only knows that one night after her mother read her a story about princesses and dragons, her mother had asked her if she ever wanted to be a princess.)

((Thyme only knows that she very quickly answered no. She likes being a witch, thank you very much, she likes the power that comes with it and the way that she can look at things and know their true nature.))

The witch starts preparing the ritual early, starts collecting the necessities in the winter so they can be ready by the fall equinox. Her daughter helps, and does not ask what this is for, just knows that it is important.

The witch looks at Thyme, both their hands raised into the air over a complicated array of plants, tended carefully to grow into a circle, and says, sorry.
