A/N- The first chapter is probably the one with the most warnings so far, so the others won’t have as many, if you’re worried about that. Also, if you notice any typos/errors, it would be greatly appreciated if you pointed it out in the comments so I could fix it! And please be kind y’all, as this is the first time I am sharing a fanfic, so I am nervous about it 🩵 Thank you in advance, and hope you enjoy!
“Wake up you lazy pig.” Was the first thing I vaguely registered in my half asleep state, before my hip was kicked by a heavy boot, causing me to flinch away and curl up under the thin tarp over me from the sharp pain that rippled through my body. I held back a hiss of pain, knowing from the time I spent here that whatever I said or however I felt, nobody cared. Things would only get worse if I did.
“Everyone is already awake. Why the fuck aren’t our boots cleaned and our clothes not washed? Do you want us to run around butt-ass naked?” The voice continued without a care in the world at my expense, as I was trying to dull the pain with a cold hand placed on my hip.
Glancing up at the man through my long dirty hair, I watched as he sneered down at me, his cold eyes roaming my form unapologetically. “Or maybe you would enjoy seeing everyone’s dicks hanging out, you slut.”
Trying to ignore his words, knowing that he was just throwing words at me to get a reaction, I slowly pushed myself up, not bothering to move my hair away as it got in my face. Getting no response from me, the man huffed in barely concealed frustration, kicking at my tarp before turning around to leave my small shaggy tent, getting the last word before slipping out, not that I had even spoken in the first place.
“If you’re not out by five, I’ll drag you out myself.”
Taking a moment to carefully rub at my hip, expecting a bruise to appear as the day passes, I stood up with a wince, cold hands shaking as I quickly slipped off my sleeping shirt and pants to replace them with my worn-out day clothing, not bothering to change my underwear and bra as I didn’t have much time to. Before I could slip my ripped and worn sneakers on, the man from before barged in once again. And without another word, he grabbed my arm with a crushing grip and pulled me out of my safe haven.
Great, another bruise added to the list.
Stumbling after him as I glanced around at the other men getting ready, them staring back with sneers and lecherous smirks with some only half dressed, my breath got caught in my throat after I was harshly thrown onto the uneven ground, landing on my side beside a pile of dirty boots and a lightly rusted bucket filled with water. “Be grateful that we filled that bucket up for you.” He said before turning around and leaving, already getting into a casual conversation with one of the other men, as if he hadn’t just handled me so harshly.
Biting my lower lip to stop the tears from shedding, I shakily sat up, my bones aching at the constant abuse of being thrown around like some doll. Why did every human group I come across treat me so horribly? I have never seen this side of humanity personally, always hearing about it through other people or social media when the world wasn’t falling apart, and it was frightening.
I just wanted a group that could protect me from the harsh world we were living in now, but everyone I came across thought only about themselves.
Men were especially terrifying, always staring at me like I was a piece of meat and handling me like I was just some play-thing to them. Thankfully, I always got away before any of them could rape me, though I couldn’t avoid the inappropriate looks, comments, and groping hands that would feel like spiders crawling on my skin.
Trying to ignore my thoughts and the feeling of being watched, I looked at the work that was put before me, taking notice that there wasn’t a scrap of fabric in sight. Not wanting to risk getting up or asking for one, otherwise I would only get backlash and condescending comments, I struggled at tearing a piece of my shirt off with my cold and shaky hands, hearing some men snickering and not-so-secretly make fun of just how weak I was, managing to tear off a piece that was already hanging on by a few threads. Dunking the cloth into the freezing water, ignoring the bite of cold seeping through my skin and into my bones, I pull it out and get started on my task, shutting out the rest of the world so I could only focus on the mundane task of wiping off dirt, leaves, and whatever else was on these warn boots.
Time flew by without me realizing it, my stomach grumbling more frequently as time passed, before I wiped down the last boot, placing it beside its twin which was the only one present. The others must’ve been taken as I was working without my realizing.
“Fucking finally. God, you took your sweet time.” A gruff and annoyed voice sounded as heavy footsteps made their way over to me, a rough and calloused hand snatching the boots off the mossy dirt. Lifting my head slightly to look up at the man, not bothering to register who it was as all the men here were the same in my eyes, I ducked my head slightly in a silent apology, knowing that if I just ignored him, he would give me trouble.
Although, I was not the least bit sorry.
Seeing my silent apology, the man just scoffed and trudged along back to his pals, who seemed to be getting ready to head out in search of food and possible supplies. Dropping the dirty and wet cloth in the bucket, I felt my heart pound in anticipation at the fact everyone will be leaving in search of food, giving me hope that I would be able to run away, only for it to sink when one of them glanced towards me.
“I’ll stay and keep watch of the slut. Make sure she doesn’t run off while everyone’s gone.” I heard from where I was sitting, watching with ice running through my veins as he then whispered something to the others, who sneered and smirked like hungry dogs, playfully punching him on the shoulder while saying “you just want to be the first, asshole.”
I know that look. It was the look I was always given that pushed me to run away from most of the other groups.
I have to escape. I have to run and never look back. Only the problem was, I was too weak, I wouldn’t be able to run far before I was caught. I haven’t eaten in days, my muscles feeling malnourished and feeble at the fact I haven’t done much movement lately.
Is this it? Will this be the day I will get defiled? That I will hate myself for the rest of my life for allowing this to happen, even if I can’t do anything in my weak state?
Feeling my face pale and the dread settle deep in my gut, I don’t notice the men leave until I was approached by the one who stayed behind, snapping out of my fog at the feeling of a rough and almost scalding hand gripping my upper arm, letting out a choked gasp.
“It’s just you and me, darling. Why don’t I give you a good time.” The sound of his voice and the feeling of his hot breath against my ear made my skin crawl, trying desperately to think of a way out of this. But, there isn’t, is there? From the grip on my arm and the feeling of my shaking knees as he pulled me up, I knew I couldn’t get away.
Feeling my emotions drain from my body as if my very soul was being expelled, I stumbled behind him numbly as he eagerly pulled me towards one of the large tents beside the old jeep, impatiently pushing aside the opening as if desperate to have his way with me. Moving emotionlessly, as if my body knew what was coming and refused to feel it, I stumbled inside before I was thrown onto the floor, his body already moving over me before I could wince at my throbbing head for hitting the bumpy ground, wrists grabbed in a crushing grip and pulled over my head. Spiders erupted from my skin as his other rough and scalding hand ran down my chest, making its way down to my shirt as I bit my bottom lip, my eyes welling up with tears behind my dirty hair.
“Shit, I don’t remember the last time I fucked a woman. I’m already getting hard, even though you are a dirty and stanky bitch.” He sneered above me, chuckling darkly at his own words while using his knee to shove my legs aside so he could slot himself between them.
Before I could stop it, a sob broke through my lips as I shook like a leaf, trying and failing at slipping my wrists out of his hand. That only seemed to amuse him as he laughed loudly, a hand slipping under my shirt and bra to cup my left breast.
“Oh come on. You’re crying about a little bit of contact? Geez, who knew you were such a pussy. Not getting enough attention?” He mocked with a particularly harsh tone, his hand almost crushing my breast, making me let out a pained yelp. “Oh don’t worry, after I fuck you brainless you will get all the attention you want from the others, you dirty slut.”
Giving up on holding back my sobs, they wracked my whole body as I shut my eyes tight, feeling a sick searing heat lowering itself against my pelvis, only to hear the tarp at the entrance behind the man rustle harshly, as if someone had slapped it aside. Flinching at the sound, I then heard a muffled yet loud thud followed by the body above me being ripped away, the man grunting in pain by the impact of whatever or whoever barged in. Too afraid to see what was happening, I kept my eyes tightly shut and curled in on myself, my shaky sobs continuing despite how desperately I tried swallowing them up, listening as bare footsteps slowly made their way deeper into the tent, walking past me and towards the groaning mess behind me.
“Wh-what the hell-“ I heard before the man seemed to freeze, if the sound of his voice getting caught in his throat was anything to go by.
There was a moment of tense silence, the only sound being huffs and heavy breathing from the mysterious person, until the man shifted. I don’t know what he was doing, but by the sound of his shaky breathing and hesitant movement, he was scared.
“H-hey there buddy. I’m n-not going to hurt y-you. Were you j-just looking for food? I-I don’t have a-any bananas but-“ He was interrupted by the mysterious person, who made a noise that sounded awfully like a snarl. That made me flinch and shake even more.
Just what was in here with me?
“O-okay! O-o-okay! I-I’m sorry, w-we don’t have an-“ The man was interrupted again, except this time, the mysterious being seemed to have gotten a hold of him, hearing the struggling movements and pleas of the male as he was dragged out of the tent. I remained curled up in fear, my shaky sobs not showing any signs of slowing down as I heard meaty thuds and screams outside, the screaming turning into gurgles before not long being silenced by one last thud.
Silence stretched on once again as I strained my hearing in hopes of listening to where that being was, but my heavy and sporadic breathing, as well as my sobs and heart pounding in my ears, were the only things I could hear. Too afraid to move, I couldn’t bring myself to uncurl and run as far away as I could, even as I suddenly heard the tarp being shifted aside, a light huff sounding at the entrance. But, despite my fear, I slowly opened my eyes and peered through my dirty hair, first glancing at a furred and dark hand placed on its knuckles on the floor of the tent, before my eyes snapped up to the face of the being.
A large, full-grown, adult chimpanzee.
I didn’t even get the chance to voice my fear before it slowly placed its hand down, cautiously moving forward on all fours towards me, as if to not frighten me, head lowered and eyes taking in my pathetic state. And despite my chilling fear, I noticed its eyes.
Eyes that were not the typical color of a chimp’s.
Green, like an emerald, with a hint of yellow speckles of gold. Eyes that were so gentle, despite the powerful being standing before me, brows furrowed as if not pleased by what it had just witnessed.
How could it look so… human.
As if slapped in the face, I flinched when I heard a low rumble, the unmistakable sound of words coming from the chimpanzee.
Hearing those words coming from an ape reminded me of what I had seen on social media before the world fell apart. A hoard of apes, barreling through San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, fighting to get into the dense woods on the other side. That had seemed like decades ago, even though it had been over two years.
Both fearing for my life and awestruck at the fact a chimp had talked, I sobbed once again, hugging my knees tighter against my chest even if the position had started to make me ache all over, unable to utter a word.
When was the last time I spoke?
Can I even speak anymore?
Keeping my eyes on the ape, I watched as his brows furrowed deeper, his nostrils flaring slightly as he took in a deep breath, before he turned his head over his shoulder at the sound of a huff behind him, another chimp popping its head into the tent. From what I can tell, it was covered in mud and leaves, its eyes glancing at me before looking at the one before me. It too had green eyes, but it looked to have a bit more yellow than the other, a ring of gold around its pupils.
The two seemed to be talking between themselves through huffs, light grunts, and facial expressions, noticing their hands moving along with the sounds they created, as if signing to each other, before the one who had appeared gave a short nod, glancing over at me with gentle and sad eyes then disappearing behind the tarp. Looking back at the chimp, he turned back towards me, taking a moment to look around the tent, before his eyes fell back onto my shaky form.
“Won’t… harm you.” He rumbled out once again, his voice rough as if on the cusp of a growl, but oddly gentle and slow. He remained on all fours, looking as if he was trying to come off as non-threatening, to which I figured that since the other ape was standing, he too could.
Trying to calm my breathing enough so I wasn’t sobbing uncontrollably, my arms slowly slackened around my knees, and little by little, I uncurled from my fetal position, my cold and shaky hands finding their way onto the hem of my shirt to hold onto and push down as far as possible.
I never want to experience that again.
It was odd that I wasn’t completely freaked out about a talking chimpanzee. Weary and surprised, sure, but I wasn’t feeling that bone chilling fear that I had when that man came onto me.
Shivering from the thought, I slowly sat up, acutely aware that he was staring like some unmoving statue, before I winced at the dull throb around my wrists from the tight grip they were in previously.
“You… are hurt.” His voice sounded with a firm tone, causing me to flinch.
What was he going to do with me?
If I was not mistaken by the sounds outside, he had killed that man. I know he said that he wouldn’t harm me but, I can’t help but be weary of him.
As if sensing my fear, the ape sighed and slowly stood up, turning so his back was turned towards me, exposing his broad and dark furred shoulders.
“… You are… safe. Go… and find… others.” Came his slow and practiced words, as if he was finding the words as he spoke them.
A moment of silence stretched between us as I processed what he said, before he shifted, preparing to leave the tent, and in turn me, behind. Before I knew it, I fell forward onto a throbbing wrist, ignoring the pain to reach my hand out to him.
The sound of my desperate and fearful voice surprised him and me, as I hadn’t spoken in a while so my voice sounded broken and weak. The chimp paused mid step towards the exit of the tent, keeping his back towards me but waiting for what I had to say. Swallowing down a shaky breath and trying to steady my voice, my eyes remained on his back, desperate to not be surrounded by human men again.
“P-please… Don’t l-leave me. I… I don’t have anywhere else to go.” I pleaded in a quiet and unsteady voice, gripping the hem of my shirt when I dropped my hand from reaching out to him.
I don’t know how he would react if I touched him, so I didn’t risk it.
I heard him let out a quiet huff, his shoulders slackening a touch before he turned his head to glance over his shoulder, his brows furrowed once again. I haven’t known him for long, and yet I can already tell that he had quite the serious personality.
“E-everywhere I go, the groups I-I come across, they always u-used and a-a-abused me. Treated me like I was their s-slave and p-plaything. I don’t want to g-go through that anymore. I-I’m… I’m terrified…” Trailing off, I looked into his eyes in desperation, hoping that he would take pity on me and take me with him.
At this point, I was willing to go with him because people, humans, were starting to scare me. I had a feeling I would do better around his kind.
“… Don’t… trust humans… to live… with… ape.” He responded, emerald eyes watching my every move as I felt my heart drop, my cold hands shaking. I felt my eyes water as I bit my bottom lip, my gaze dropping to his feet.
“… I don’t blame you. We are horrible.” I whispered in a broken voice, before lifting my eyes again to see him fully turned towards me, his shoulders set back and eyes looking down at me passed his slightly protruded muzzle, as if looking at someone inferior.
Or maybe I was just thinking that because of his imposing presence.
“B-but I promise that I won’t do anything to harm you or the others. Not that I’d be able to. If I ever do, you can k-kill me if you want. It wouldn’t matter either way. I’d d-die out here by m-myself. Y-you can even pretend that I’m not th-there… I blend into the b-background really well.” It was obvious how desperate I was, hurrying to explain myself to the point my voice started to give out towards the end, exhausted at the fact it hadn’t been used in a while.
I wanted to say more, but my voice decided to stop working, the face he was making also contributing to my silence. He seemed slightly annoyed, yet thoughtful, observing me and my movements, as if to see if I was lying, that I was telling the truth about not harming anyone.
Once again, silence dragged on between us, my heart hammering in my chest as I waited for his response, before he suddenly scowled to himself and huffed through his nose, nostrils flaring. I expected him to snarl and tell me to leave before he killed me, flinching and leaning back slightly in fear, but he only rolled his shoulders then proceeded to turn and move the tarp of the exit aside, sounding out a noise that seemed to be a mix between a hoot and a grunt, as if to get someone’s attention.
I remained frozen in anticipation, glancing something passed him move, before I recognized the muddy chimp from earlier make its way over. I could only assume it too was a male by the way it carried itself when communicating with the other.
They proceeded to make hand gestures towards each other, the dirty chimp glancing over the other’s shoulder to look at me, before nodding at the other. I watched as the dirty chimp stepped aside to allow the other to leave the tent, thinking that he was leaving me behind as I jolted forward to call out to him again, before the muddy one looked over at me with gentle eyes, a hand waving at me to stand up and follow him.
Wait, is he letting me come with him? Did he decide to trust me and take me with him?
Feeling relief flood my veins, I let out a shaky breath then proceeded to try to stand up, only for my knees to buckle underneath me.
Before I could brace myself for the fall, I felt leathery and warm hands catch me by my arm, the hold gentle yet steady and firm. Looking up in surprise at the chimp, his lips merely upturned into a light smile before he helped me steady myself, letting go once I found my footing.
“… Th-thank you.” I breathed out, stunned at the small kind gesture. I couldn’t remember the last time someone had touched me in order to help me.
I had forgotten how nice it was.
The chimp merely waved his hand as if to say ‘no big deal,’ but I just shook my head, looking into his eyes to express that I really meant it. Watching him huff out a light laugh, I couldn’t help but smile a touch, watching him casually walk back over to the exit, waving once again for me to follow along, to which I complied, trailing behind him on shaky legs.
Blinking as I stepped into the light, it took a moment for my eyes to adjust, feeling a light drizzle of rain prickling my skin, before I stiffened at the sight before me.
There were at least ten apes in the clearing, searching through the camp only to huff and toss whatever it was that they were inspecting aside, some looking over to stare at me as if on guard, their eyes watching my every move.
They, just like the two chimpanzees I had just met, had green eyes.
Feeling self conscious, I tugged my shirt down and hunched my shoulders in hopes of appearing smaller, noticing one particular chimp with a nasty scar across a cloudy eye, staring me down as if I was the plague itself. Something about that chimp sent alarm bells ringing in my head, so I slowly made my way behind the chimp I was following, avoiding that scarred chimp’s gaze.
Glancing around the camp more, my eyes then landed on a crumpled form beside the tent I had just exited. It was the body of the man that had planned on having his way with me, the sight of his chest caved in and his head split open causing me to quickly turn away and cover my mouth with a muffled cry, hands shaking uncontrollably and breath coming out in sporadic gasps, tears pricking my eyes. It was a gruesome sight, the violence and nauseating amount of blood burning an image into my mind that I was sure I would have nightmares over.
Not realizing I had stopped walking, frozen in fear and nausea, I flinched away with a muffled yelp when a warm and gentle hand was placed on my shoulder, its hold reassuring and firm, as gentle hoots sounded beside me. Looking up at the muddy chimp, eyes filled with tears and fear, I noticed just how large they were, my eyes barely reaching his shoulders, and that only made my gut churn.
They were apes. They could easily kill me just as that chimp had done to that man. A brutal and painfully slow death. And I would be going with them, surrounded by who knows how many others.
Before I could spiral any more, I was carefully and slowly pulled into a chest, the mud sticking onto my shirt and skin as long arms wrapped around my back, gentle and firm in their hold of me.
Despite my initial fear and stiffening at the contact, my breathing slowly stabilized as I gradually relaxed, my forehead finding its way onto his shoulder as I felt his thumb rub at my back. Slowly, I came out of my panic attack, tears ceasing and mind clearing. I didn’t even mind the sticky feeling of the mud, enjoying the soothing hug, although I did start to wonder why exactly he was covered in mud.
It didn’t take much longer after I gathered myself before the chimp let go of me, stepping back and smiling at me with a light pat on my shoulder, before beckoning me once again to follow. Trying to ignore the stares, I followed after him, refusing to turn back, instead looking over to where he was walking, seeing four beautiful black stallions grazing, one of them bearing a strip of white along its forehead down to its muzzle.
Realizing that he was making his way over to leave the clearing, as I also just started to notice the other apes getting ready to leave— the ape that had saved me, the scarred ape, and an ape looking as if he was balding all over making their way over to the horses as well— I hesitated a touch, reaching a hand up to just barely graze his arm. His response was instant, his gait stopping as he looked over his shoulder with a slight confused look.
If I still wasn’t so nervous, I might’ve found the expression amusing.
“S-sorry. I just… Could I take some things with me? I don’t have much, but I would like a different change of clothes.” I hesitantly asked, still nervous to ask for things, as whenever I did I would always get backlash from the men.
The chimp seemed to think about it for a moment, glancing ahead at the ape who always seemed to have a serious expression, who took notice of the look and proceeded to give a single nod before mounting his horse, the muddy ape turning his head back to me to nod.
Letting out a silent breath of relief, I hurried over to my makeshift tent, which was just a tarp being held by large sticks and stones so it wouldn’t be blown away, before clambering inside, pushing aside the tarp I used as a blanket to reach for the backpack that contained all the things I owned. I always had to be prepared in the likelihood I would have to escape from the camp. Slinging the single strap over my shoulder, as the other had been ripped off long ago, I then hastily slipped my ripped and worn sneakers onto my feet and stumbled out of the tent, not even caring if my brisk movement caused the tarp to get ripped off of the sticks that were holding it up.
Heart hammering in my chest in anticipation, I jogged back over to the chimp on shaky legs, my eyes bright with hope that I would finally be somewhere I would be safe. I mean, sure, there is still a possibility that I wouldn’t be, but by the way the two apes I met acted, I felt like I wouldn’t be abused by the other chimps. I wouldn’t care if they didn’t pay much attention to me, as long as I was safe and had food and water.
“Okay. I’m ready.” I said as I stopped beside the dirty chimp, who seemed to have been watching me the whole time, his brows slightly downturned as if in concern by the condition I was living in. But I didn’t pay much attention to it, so he continued on making his way to the others, the last available horse being the one with the white strip along the top of its head.
Although I had never been close enough to a horse, and despite my slight fear of it as it was such a large animal that could easily stomp me into the ground, I couldn’t help but smile gently at it, my heart warming at the sight of the beautiful animal. Horses may not be my favorite animal, but I always did appreciate their beauty.
“He’s beautiful.” I whispered without realizing it, only noticing once the chimp glanced back at me with a smile and bright eyes, hooting and gesturing with his hands.
The sudden voice made me jump, turning my head up to look at the broad shouldered chimp sitting atop his pure black stallion, the sight almost breathtaking.
I had to admit, despite the intimidating factor, he was also quite handsome… For a chimpanzee.
“O-oh. Yes, of course…” I trailed off, choosing to ignore the thought that had popped up in my head regarding the chimp that had saved me.
Shaking my head slightly as if to clear my thoughts, I looked up at the horse, hesitant on even trying to climb up as I was sure I would slip and fall, it not having a saddle and being a little wet from the drizzle that was still going on, before warm leathery hands carefully gripped my hips. I could only yelp as I was raised up onto the stallion, instantly leaning forward and placing my hands on its neck in hopes of stabilizing myself, my heart pounding.
I heard a huff that sounded an awful lot like a laugh, glancing down at the muddy ape who looked up at me in amusement before signing something with his hands. I looked over at the serious chimp as he translated.
“Never… sat atop… a horse?”
If my eyes didn’t deceive me, it seemed like the serious chimp’s lips curled up a touch as well.
Feeling embarrassed as my face warmed, I looked down with a slight pout, only to quietly squeal as the horse shifted on its hooves. “Okay okay, yeah, I have never ridden a horse, let alone seen one up close. Now could you please get on before I fall off.” I said in a higher pitched voice than usual, my hands shaking slightly at the fear of the horse rearing back on its hind legs.
The only response I got were huffed laughter between the two, the serious one more tame than the muddy one, some other chimps joining in as if my reaction was amusing, before the muddy one patted my knee with a gentle hand, gesturing for me to scooch back a bit. Silently nodding, I scooted back and moved my hands away to allow him to hop onto the stallion, before my hands were once again searching for stability, grabbing onto his shoulders despite me wanting to hug his back for more stability.
He didn’t seem to mind my hands on his shoulders, even huffing out a laugh at how quickly my hands grabbed onto him, before I noticed his arms moving.
He must’ve been signing again, so I glanced over at the serious ape to see if he would translate again. To which he did, eyes briefly flicking to me before looking back at what the ape in front of me said.
“He says… okay… to hold… back.”
Having to think about what he meant, as it was obvious he was still learning how to speak, I looked back at the chimp in front of me who looked over his shoulder, eyes light when he gestured his head forward.
“You mean… It’s okay to… h-hug your back?” I asked hesitantly, watching him roll his eyes lightheartedly, which surprised me at just how human that was, before he nodded with a quiet hoot.
Still a tad hesitant, I scooted forward, being mindful not to get too close as I was still shaken by what had happened earlier, before I slowly wrapped my arms around his torso, feeling him breathing as his arms lowered from their slightly raised position. And before I knew it, we started moving, flinching and hugging myself closer to his muddy back, the cold mud seeping deep into my skin for a moment, only to be chased away by the heat underneath, his body warm and comforting.
Pressing the side of my face between his shoulder blades, not caring about the mud getting on my cheek and hair, as I was already dirty enough, I caught a glimpse of the scarred chimp riding behind the serious chimp, the milky white and dark forest eyes staring me down as if it was picking apart my soul and not liking what it was seeing. Stiffening, I felt my face pale a tad, a shiver running down my spine.
Something about that ape was really unsettling.
This was going to be a long trip, wasn’t it.
