Having parents who aren't as bad as they used to be is crazy cause they'll be sitting there doing some normal shit and you're like kubrick staring at them
In a language that contains words like devotion, passion, enthusiasm, love, fascination, obsession, etc., I canāt help but regret this tendency to cram all those meanings into "hyperfixation," a word which manages to pathologize and medicalize the act of having interests.
seeing all the 14-17 y/o queer kids who donāt know what v for vendetta isā¦. u mean the blockbuster film written by two trans women about a masked vigilante who decides to singlehandedly take down a fascist alternate version of england set in the distant year of 2020⦠and his driving force was getting justice for a lesbian who he never met but whose diary he found, who was separated from her wife before being killed by said fascist govā¦. and it stars natalie portmanā¦. okay
the movie is great, with amazing acting:
and the original graphic novel is phenomenal:
I highly recommend them both
and theyāve never been more relevant
āPeople shouldnāt be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.ā
Thereās strong subtext that V is a trans man and A)the lesbian from the diary or B)her wife.
frankly I prefer the movie over the comic, for three reasons:
1) lewis prothero as a rush limbaugh/glenn beck/bill oāreilly type is both more applicable and way funnier than a 1940s radio propagandistĀ
2) it has stephen fry as gordon detriech, and makes him explicitly gay and pretendingĀ to be attracted to evey as part of being closeted than actuallyĀ attracted to evey and having sex with her while she hides in his home.
3) the movie came out in 2005; that is, only four years after 9/11, while the Iraq war was still in full swing, and while xenophobia and Islamophobia were not just acceptable, but tacitly encouraged by the administration at the time. which makes the following exchange even more poignant and sweet:
Evey: [seeing a book in a glass display case] What is that? Gordon:Ā Itās a copy of the Qurāan, 14th century. Evey:Ā [shocked] Are you a Muslim? Gordon:Ā No, Iām in television. Evey:Ā But why would you keep it? Gordon:Ā I donāt have to be a Muslim to find the images beautiful or its poetry moving.
just⦠the easy acceptance of it. the idea that a religion that he doesnāt believe inĀ and that has been explicitly outlawed in-universeĀ is a source of beauty. Iām not Muslim, either, but that particular moment really stuck with me emotionally.
i love this hug so much. they just like, slam into each other. like itās inevitable. like they canāt help it. and thereās so much relief on avaās face and you can see how she just breathes out cos beaās there

we are truly blessed that Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails spent so much of the early 90s making music specifically for kinky goth bisexuals with complicated relationships with organized religion

Ava started writing, with a pen and paper, again during their time in the alps.
She started small. Her own name. The name of the town theyāre in. Their grocery lists. Short notes to let Beatrice know where she went off to.
Ava quickly developed a habit of leaving post-it notes around the apartment, scribbled onto them were her happy thoughts. Saw a dog today. Found a cute cafe. Camila and Mother Supes are both safe.
She never stopped documenting these little things on her brightly colored post-it notes, even after they left the alps.
After Beatrice returned to Jullianās house post-battle and without Ava by her side, she found them: haphazardly stacked together and hidden in a zip compartment in Avaās bag.
The first few notes were familiar, from their alps days. Then a couple Beatrice hadnāt seen before. Dick pastries. Prado Museum.
Then, training with Beatrice. She wasnāt sure when this was from. She didnāt care.
Another one, Beatriceās sunglasses, followed by, Beatriceās face when sheās trying to focus.
Beatrice went through the rest of the stack. Almost all of the notes were about her. Beatrice letting me call her Bea. Beatrice got darted and couldnāt function. Beatriceās face when she heard that Camila does TikTok now.
And so this was how the sister warriors found Beatrice, sitting on Avaās bed, crying over a single, ordinary, pale-yellow post-it note that read: Bea will live.

beatrice : I'm a knife.
