Kitty screams as she wakes up, sitting bolt, upright and struggling to catch her breath. Within seconds the door is open, and Jane has entered the room. âSsh Kitty youâre okay my little oneâ. Kitty is already in tears, and unlike usual, she backs away from Jane. Janeâs face changes, sheâs used to Kitty having nightmares, all the queens do, but sheâs never reacted this way before. âKitty itâs just me. Itâs Jane okay Iâm not here to hurt youâ she whispers hoping that will bring Kitty to reality. But instead, Kitty backs away yet again, tears still streaming down her face. âTalk to me Kittyâ Jane whispers, keeping her distance in an attempt not to upset the girl more. âYou hate me,â Kitty whispers, not looking up. âWhat? No, I donât Kitty Kat. I could never hate youâ Jane replies in shock. âYou do hate me!â Kitty insists. âYou think Iâm weak and stupid and a child and all I do is ruin your funâ she continues. âKitty thatâs not true at all little one, not at allâ Jane whispers, almost in tears. Kitty looks up slightly. âYou should hate me, though. Why donât you?â She whispers, curiosity breaking through the fear and anger in her voice. Jane gestures to the end of the bed, wordlessly asking if she can sit down. Kitty nods and holds her arms out for a hug. Within a second, Jane has Kitty wrapped in her arms and is gently rocking her back and forth. âKatherine Howard youâre like the daughter I never hadâ she starts, but Kitty interrupts her. âYou should be gladâ she whispers, half smiling. âLook what happened to Catie and Annieâ. Jane pushes a piece of hair off Kittyâs face and nods, acknowledging that she had, in some ways, been luckier than the queens preceding her. She continues, âyou mean everything to me. No one will ever replace my son, but having you helps more than youâll ever knowâ. Kitty smiles and whispers âI would never want to replace Edward, but Iâm glad I can help a littleâ. Jane sits for a few minutes, just stroking Kitty's hair and rocking her slightly. Kitty remains silent, knowing Jane is reminiscing. After a few minutes, Jane speaks again. âDo you wanna talk about what happened Kitty? Donât tell Catie cos she wonât like this, but I will not hesitate to kill anyone who bothers youâ Kitty shakes her head and whispers âitâs in the past now. All those men. They kept telling me you didnât like me. That none of the queens did. That Anna hated me for taking her place and that Anne hated that I took attention from her beheading. I just felt like they were telling the truthâ Kitty curls up, mostly out of fear. Jane sighs and ponders her next words. âAll due respect, but thatâs a bunch of crap. I love you, and Anna loves you, Anne adores you! We all love you! Cathy might not have the words to say it sometimes, but she loves you, and I know she doesâ Kitty snuggles into Jane and whispers âyou swore Janey. You donât do thatâ Jane shakes her head and whispers âI donât swear, but itâs true Kitty. Nothing they say is true. I hope you understand that now. And even if you donât, I will always be here to remind you and so will everyone elseâ Kitty nods, somehow already falling back to sleep. âSleep well, little oneâ Jane whispers, laying down with the young queen on top of her. âMmm night Janeyâ the young queen mumbles, already asleep.Â
