the thing is that the experiences and culture of the Black community in 30s DC is 1) incredibly complex, 2) not really the main focus of the story, and 3) not really something i, a white guy, can completely understand.

i'm struggling with figuring out how to give these topics the attention they deserve, both in the character's backstory and just generally, without just co-opting a story that is better told by a Black writer.

i guess what i'm asking is how to include those topics in the story without it becoming another 'white dude co-opts Black stories' kind of situation

(i apologise that some of this is worded weirdly, i'm autistic and struggle with language stuff)

I'll be honest, if the focus of your story is eugenics and classism, but you don't think you can fathom or deliver on how that would affect the Black DC community and Black MC who would be most affected by both of those things... I agree, I'm not sure you should take on this story 😅

My answer is the same as it always is! Plus, we're actually reading Medical Apartheid right now- if you want to understand the sort of mentality that we might have, you should look into literature like this, as well as even looking into any real DC history of medical malpractice within its Black community.

In addition, the story doesn't have to give us a dissertation on the community before you can write about it. But it would have to come up as a setting and source of... Interactions, I suppose, BECAUSE they would be the ones suffering! How can we talk about a community suffering from those things without ever showing them?

Notes again:

Was late to drawing these silvereyes because I was so tired. I drew them in a pair since most the photos I saw were of two together, and I think they look very cute like this.

Another pair of dinosaurs, these Einiosaurus were based on a photo I took of some bison (hence the grass, too). Not a very polished piece because I was rushing myself too much.

I chose to draw the rainbow lorikeet without color because I have malice in my heart. Plus, it made for a good challenge to make the differences clear still. This was a recreation of a photo taken by iNaturalist user steveansell.

This Sinosaurus is hooting after a victorious hunt, maybe hoping to attract a mate to share it with or to bring its offspring to the kill. It hooting at all is inspired by the Jurassic Park novel's *Dilophosaurus.*

Not as detailed as my usual Green River Formation pieces, but still a detailed background. Also, anachronistic with the time when Foro would have been around here, but the other ones also were, so I'm keeping it a pattern.

This Saltasaurus has dug itself a little hollow to sleep in, feeling safe from attacks thanks to its osteoderms. I thought about giving it some halite-inspired colors, but didn't want to cover the wrinkles and osteoderm details.

after i made my wooden doll, i was musing about what other unusual materials i might use for a bjd. my partner suggested paper, and also gave me access to their craft paper collection -> i made this.

she is almost entirely made of paper & cardboard. the joints are wooden beads & worbla, because i did figure out a way to make ball joints out of paper, but it really was not worth the effort. all her limbs have tubes of rolled-up cardboard in them to keep the structure sturdy, and the origami flowers are glued around those.
