he has such an inconsistent idea of himself haha. it's really cute how he does not fully comprehend the degree to which he takes advantage of his position as abbot to indulge to a degree that would very likely cross over into the territory of gluttony. but who can blame him really?? being handed the keys to an abbey stuck in the past, rendering it essentially a sinking ship. Gernot was not the right man to lead Kiersau out of the deep waters to begin with, but the circumstances meant its eventual closure was inevitable... even if the fire hadn't happened. you saw the state it was in by act 2, I don't really think there would have been a way to avoid such a fate even if Gernot had closed the scriptorium earlier and invested in a printing press. so perhaps, given the stress he was under and the murder of the baron + increasing irritability of the peasantry (which would have complicated matters for Gernot, who likely held the prosperity of his brothers and sisters at the top of his mind and, crucially, above the well-being of the residents of Tassing), it only makes sense that one might relent and indulge in one or two of the mortal sins. ok i realize this is insane for me to be writing about but I think I can be owed a pass considering the state of inebriation I am in currently.
