I think it’s important that Lucy Gray can have a conversation like this, where they talk over their kills so matter-of-factly. She’s a survivor and a victor. She sees the line between good and evil and tries to stay on the right side of it, but she’s not inherently gentle and pure. She’s a fighter. She lives in the ‘gray,’ not black and white. And I think the thing is they’re both pretty gray for most of the story? Until he crosses that line away from her at the end. They’re perfectly positioned in so many ways to understand each other, which makes the tragedy hit better. There has to be a real chance, and real feelings, for the tragedy to be powerful IMO.
