I know this is a theme I keep coming back to, but I will never get over the constant rhetorical Texas Two-Step pro-psych people do about who the supposed beneficiary of therapy is supposed to be.
"I don't want therapy. I don't think that would benefit me."
"So you only care about what benefits YOU? You don't care how your Unhealthy Behaviors Mental Illness Brain Chemistry affects your family and friends and society? Most people are in therapy because of selfish narcissists like you who refuse to go to therapy!"
"Yeah, I actually have a lot of moral and philosophical objections to the premise that I have some kind of moral obligation to change fundamental aspects of myself to make me more palatable to others."
"Nooooooo, sweatie, babe, modern therapy isn't about making you palatable to others! It's about your goals and your healing journey and making you your best self!"
"Okay, well, my goals and my idea of my best self don't really involve the idea that my default state is a disease I need to be 'healed' from."
"So you expect your poor elderly parents to support you forever? You want to be a burden on the hardworking taxpayers? You want to be an economically unproductive useless eater? How selfish!"
"I mean, I think the premise of therapeutic 'help' centered around making the subject more economically productive is inherently unethical. People's value doesn't come from money."
"Nooooooo, honeeeeeeeey, therapy isn't about making you more economically productive! That's just what those silly anti-psych people on REDDIT say! Real therapy is actually very leftist and socialist, because the real economic revolution is SELF-CARE! You deserve to be HAPPY!"
"Right, I don't find therapy helpful for that, because the things that make me unhappy are generally rooted in my material reality and other people's treatment of me, not in some inner quality of my brain."
"So you think the world should change just for YOU? You think the world revolves around YOU? You think you're SPECIAL and DIFFERENT and everyone around you is supposed to just accept that?"
"Well yeah, I unironically believe that people should be accepting of differences."
"Oooooohhhhhhhhh..... snookums.... do you think you don't deserve Care? Don't you think you're worthy of The Help You Need?"
