What's in my drawer this week? Still drawing on my plate, and am ready to go with printing my photosensitive plate on the right. Am also making moves on my stone! Lots to do before next Tuesday 😬😬😬

Stone grinding and plate WIP
Images from our class trip to Signal Return in Detroit! I've been dying to visit this printshop and learn about letterpress, and my expectations did not disappoint. So thankful for our wonderful host, Lee Marchalonis, who showed us around the studio, and even let our class create prints! I hope to participate in a workshop at SR in the near future and learn more about the art of letterpress.
Self Portrait, 2017
Finally printed my self portrait! Pretty jazzed about how it turned out.

Today's progress!
A Day in the Studio with Rachel Werthmann - Practice (with Blue Lotus).
Recently, we featured a story about Rachel’s Practice series that explores yoga via printmaking. Both require repetition, practice, and time. The image depicts a woman in crow posture, or bakasana, and is pixelated and overlapped to create movement.
Rachel says about her work: “The image in my Practice series depicts a pixelated image of a young woman in crow posture (bakasana) with the same image overlapped, shifted, and distorted. I hoped the busy image evokes a sense of time, movement, and repetition. To emphasize this idea, I did many experiments by printing the same image on top of each other two or three times, such as in Practice (Triple Drop). The semi-aligned result with a CMYK color scheme creates a subtle illusion of movement to the viewer. Additionally, the lotus printed over some of my single dropped images features a verse from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and ancient yoga text, which in summary means “Practice and all is coming”. All images were produced from a laser-cut wood matrix.”

A Day in the Studio with Rachel Werthmann - Practice (Triple Drop).
Rachel is a senior studying Psychology and Art & Design. But her artistic interests are not limited to printmaking, in fact, she is also a member of the Michigan Marching Band. She has been thrilled with her time at Stamps. During her time here, she has been exploring as many new mediums as possible - her two favorites being drawing and printmaking.
Rachel’s series Practice focuses on how time and repetition improves one’s yogic practice. The image depicts a pixelated image of a young woman in crow posture, or bakasana, with the same image overlapped, shifted, and distorted in order to mimic movement.
Rachel says about her work: “I was interesting in exploring yoga via printmaking. I hoped the busy image evokes a sense of time, movement, and repetition. To emphasize this idea, I did many experiments by printing the same image on top of itself two or three times, such as in Practice (Triple Drop).”
