I think the problem is, that we cant have anything difficult or controversial, anything that detracts from a statistically optimised maximum possible ROI based on complete market penetration. We cant have religious trauma or religious abuse in Carrie because religious parents will claim they are being attacked. We cant have our hero lie or use trickery because that would be 'setting a bad example' they want the smoothest least textured version possible to maximise box office with no barrier to entry.
